DEBATE ON U.S. PATRIOT ACT TUESDAY

In conjunction with the American Constitutional Society, the Federalist Society is hosting its first debate of the year, featuring our own Professor Fred Cate, who will be pitted against Heritage Institute Scholar Paul Rosenzweig on the subject of the U.S. Patriot Act. Who will prevail? Come to the Moot Court Room at noon on Tuesday, Sept. 23, to witness the outcome and to learn about the U.S. Patriot Act's potential impact on individual freedom and security. Free pizza will be available for all in attendance.

LOTUS FEST BRINGS WORLD MUSIC TO B- TOWN

One of the very best events of the year takes place this week when the Lotus World Music & Arts Festival celebrates its 10th anniversary, from Wednesday, Sept. 24, to Sunday, Sept. 28, right here in our little corner of Bloomington. Single-admission tickets to the festival, which grant access to all downtown Bloomington venues, are $25 for one night and $40 for both Friday and Saturday. The Lotus Fest attracts a large number of Bloomington expatriates who make it their own personal homecoming. Fortunately, you don't have to wait until you've graduated and moved away. Come experience Lotus while you're here! You won't regret it, but you may be confounded by the list of enticing options. 2L STUDENTS TRIUMPH IN GOLF OUTING

Countless golfers (alumni, students, and faculty) descended on the Bloomington Country Club last Friday afternoon to participate in the alumni weekend golf outing. All had a splendid day. Based on the "blind" handicap system employed for this special event, the winning teams were:

PRESENTATION ON INTERNATIONAL LAW CAREERS THURSDAY

Professor Rumu Sarkar from Georgetown University Law Center will speak about career opportunities in international law at 9:55 a.m. on Thursday, Sept. 25, in the Moot Court Room. Sarkar will speak generally about opportunities with U.S. government agencies, multilateral organizations, NGOs, law firms with international practices, and consulting firms. Sarkar teaches LLM and JD students at Georgetown and has worked for private law firms, the U.S. Agency for International Development, the Overseas Private Investment Corporation, and consulting firms. Sarkar will answer questions following the presentation.

Professor Kevin Brown conducted a session entitled "Unconscious Racism: Does It Affect the Judicial System of Indiana?" on Sept. 12 in Indianapolis at the Annual Meeting of the Judicial Conference, which was sponsored by the Indiana Judicial Center.

JD STUDENTS TO TAKE ON LLM STUDENTS IN "SOCCER SHOWDOWN"

The first annual IU International Soccer Showdown, a soccer competition between JD and international graduate students, will take place at 4:30 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 10, at Karst Farms Park on West Second Street. There will be a post-game celebration at Upland Brewery. Winners earn bragging rights until next year! GLOBAL LEGAL STUDIES JOURNAL HONORS FOUR STUDENTS

The Executive Board of the Indiana Journal of Global Legal Studies (IJGLS) is pleased to announce that Jesulon Gibbs, 3L, has been selected as Outstanding Managing Editor for the journal's first cite-checking assignment of the semester. Additionally, Lucas Carscadden, Elizabeth Chitty, and Lucelly Duenas have been selected as the top three Outstanding Associates for the first cite-checking assignment. We ask the Law School community to join us in thanking these individuals for their outstanding work on behalf of the journal. We also want to thank all of the members of our team for their diligent efforts on the first cite-checking assignment.

CONFERENCE ON CHILDREN, MENTAL HEALTH, AND THE LAW TUESDAY

Leaders from the legal community, the health field, and the legislature will meet in Indianapolis from 8:50 a.m. to 4:45 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 23, at the Indiana Bar Center, 230 E. Ohio Street, 5th floor, Indianapolis, to discuss legal issues concerning children with mental illness. The Indiana State Bar Association's Civil Rights of Children Committee, Children's Law Center, and the American Bar Association's Juvenile Justice Center are sponsoring this seminar. Attorneys can obtain 6 CLE hours and mental health professionals can obtain 6 CEU hours. Law School and other university students are also encouraged to attend. The cost for students is $50. NATIONAL ENVIRONMENTAL MOOT COURT COMPETITION APPLICATIONS DUE SEPT. 29

Positions are open for representing the Law School in the National Environmental Moot Court Competition. All students are welcome to apply. Three students will be selected to represent IU. Two will write the brief and present oral arguments, and the third will act as a student coach. The faculty coach is Professor A. James Barnes. The brief is due early in December and the oral arguments will be given at Pace University in White Plains, N.Y., beginning on Feb. 19.

Although not required, moot court and oral argument experience as well as relevant course work will be considered. Priority will be given to second- and third-year students. Preference for the two team positions will be given to new participants, while past participants will receive preference for the student coach position. If interested, please submit a current resume and a statement of interest (covering relevant experience, reasons for interest in the competition, and commitment to the study of environmental law) to Dean Leonard Fromm no later than Monday, Sept. 29. Dean Fromm, Professor John Applegate, and Professor Barnes will make the selections.

This year's topic has yet to be posted, but past topics have included illegal dumping of hazardous waste, vicarious criminal liability of corporate officers for their company's environmental crimes, and commerce clause limits on water pollution regulation.

About the NEMCC

In 1989, Pace University School of Law began hosting the NEMCC. Regarded as the pre-eminent environmental law moot court competition in the United States, the NEMCC attracts over 180 student advocates from over 65 law schools across the United States and Canada every year. The event provides a quality experience in environmental litigation. Participants have the opportunity to demonstrate their skills in brief writing and oral advocacy before federal circuit judges and judges from the U.S. EPA's Appeals Board. Three teams compete against each other in each argument, reflecting the fact that actual environmental litigation frequently involves numerous parties: the government, public interest groups, and the regulated industries.
