GRUTTER BRIEFS ONLINE

The University of Michigan has posted all of the amicus briefs filed on both sides in the Grutter admissions law suit online, including the amicus brief filed by Indiana University in support of the University of Michigan.

EVENTS & LECTURES

DIVERSITY IN EDUCATION: DISCUSSION WITH PROFESSOR STAKE TODAY

On Monday, Feb. 24, we will continue our discussion of diversity in education with a discussion led by Professor Jeff Stake, chair of our Admissions Committee. Sponsored by

student groups SLA, BLSA, LLSA and the ACS, the talk will be held on Monday in the Moot Court Room from noon until 12:45.

Professor Stake will address three main issues that continue to be raised in the students' ongoing dialogue: IU Law's admissions process, facts relating to Professor Heidt's op-ed piece, the IU Law faculty's views as expressed through their resolution, and, if time permits, general comments about affirmative action.

Professor Stake will speak and answer questions in what promises to be a very informative and interesting talk. Please join us during the lunch hour for a brief but educational discussion.

DEATH PENALTY LECTURE FRIDAY

Stephen Hartnett, from the University of Illinois, will speak on Feb. 28 at 4 p.m. at 124 Mottier Hall about death penalty issues. Hartnett is writing a book on the history of capital punishment and has been one of the group that has developed "The Waiting Room," a public, multi-media, interactive art project designed to raise questions about the state and nature of capital punishment in the United States. KATHERINE FRANKE TO SPEAK THURSDAY

Katherine Franke will give a public lecture on Thursday, Feb. 27, about the conundrum of bringing law to bear on expanding sexual liberty for women. She will speak from 4:30 p.m. to 6 p.m. in the Moot Court Room. This lecture is part of the Kinsey Institute's 50th Anniversary Celebration of Sexual Behavior in the Human Female.

BARRISTER'S BALL SATURDAY

Do you have your tickets yet? The last day to purchase your Barrister's Ball tickets is Wednesday, Feb. 26. Tickets are $45.00 for couples and $30.00 for individuals. Dinner will be served, followed by a program honoring former Dean of Admissions Frank Motley, and dancing. The ball will be held at Chapman's, which is located on East 3rd St/ SR 446 (about two miles east of the College Mall, next to Ryan's Steakhouse). Sales are picking up, so get your tickets ASAP!

FCLJ SPEAKER SERIES KICKS OFF NEXT WEEK

The Federal Communiations Law Journal is celebrating its tenth year of

publication at IU with a four-part speaker series highlighting the intersection of communications and the law. The first presentation will take place on Monday, March 3, at 3 p.m. in the Moot Court Room.

Jeff Riffer, JD'78, a partner in the Los Angeles law firm of Jeffer Mangels Butler & Marmaro, practices intellecutual property law and will give the inside story regarding one of his most well-known cases, Playboy Enterprises, Inc. v. Netscape Communications Corp.

SINGING FOR SUMMER SALARIES NEXT WEEK

The Public Interest Law Foundation will set up tables in the lobby from noon to 1 p.m. from Monday, Feb. 24, through Friday, Feb. 28, to accept donations for faculty who have agreed to participate in the Singing for Summer Salaries event. The professor who receives the most donations will serenade the Law School (with the aid of a karaoke machine) in the Moot Court Room at noon on Wednesday, March 5. Donation tables will also be set up next week from noon to 1 p.m. on Monday, March 3, and Tuesday, March 4. All donations are matched by the school and will be used to help students who are working without pay this summer.

ILS BAKE SALE TODAY AND TOMORROW

ILS will be hosting a bake sale during lunchtime on Monday, Feb. 24, and Tuesday, Feb. 25, in the lobby. Coffee will be sold throughout the morning on Monday and Tuesday at only $1 per cup!

ILS/LLM HAPPY HOUR MIXER NEXT WEEK

In the spirit of connecting with the Law School's international students, ILS will be hosting a Happy Hour Mixer for all LLM students and ILS members next week on Friday, March 7. Details are forthcoming. ILS is currently considering hosting the mixer at a local restaurant, in the Faculty Lounge, or at the Union. BOWL FOR KIDS' SAKE

Gather your friends together for fun and philanthropy! Bowl for Kids' Sake, a night of bowling, karaoke, and cheap beer, will be held from 9 p.m. to midnight on Wednesday, Feb. 26, and Thursday, Feb. 27, at IU Bowl. ETHICS IN THE LEGAL PROFESSION

Phi Delta Phi Foster Inn has designated March 3-7 as Ethics Week at IU. As part of the event, we will host a brown-bag lunch discussion with a local judge at noon on Tuesday, March 4, in the Moot Court Room. The judge will tell us about personal experiences with ethical situations that confront lawyers daily. Look for signs with details about the event or check next week's ILA. After the judge's presentation, there will be an opportunity to ask questions regarding membership in Phi Delta Phi.

PHI DELTA PHI SPRING INITIATION

Phi Delta Phi Foster Inn invites any interested students to join our legal fraternity. We will initiate new members at 7 p.m on Tuesday, March 11, in the Moot Court Room. Phi Delta Phi is dedicated to the highest ethical standards in the legal profession and includes five of the current Supreme Court justices among its members. Members of the legal profession are able to join Phi Delta Phi only while they are in law school; however, once initiated, a member is a member for life. Hear your fellow students complete excellent oral arguments! Sign up to be a bailiff during the quarterfinal and semifinal rounds of the Sherman Minton Moot Court competition. Check the bulletin board outside the Moot Court office for available times.

ALL e-mail about reserving classrooms must be sent to BL-LAW-EVENTS. Mail must be sent to the correct address, bl-law-events (for Outlook users) or bl-events-law@exchange.indiana.edu (for non- Outlook users). Please include the date and time of event, length of time room will be needed, classroom requested and number of people attending event. Requests should be sent at least one week before the event and include the name of the person requesting, the organization planning the event, and an e-mail address. Confirmations will be sent by reply e-mail. Thank you!
