EVENTS & LECTURES

AMBASSADOR WEST TO SPEAK ON MONDAY

The International Law Society (ILS) will host Ambassador Mary Beth West on Monday, Nov. 4, at noon in room 122. Ambassador West will discus careers in the State Department and foreign policy. A question and answer period will follow. Pizza will be provided.

GITLIN TO SPEAK ON MEDIA AND DEMOCRACY

The Institute for Advanced Study presents a lecture by Todd Gitlin on "The Media Torrent and the Erosion of Democracy," on Wed., Nov. 6, at 7:30 p.m., in Woodburn Hall 120. Todd Gitlin, professor of sociology and journalism at Columbia University, is the author of numerous books, including The Twilight of Common Dreams and The Sixties: Years of Hope and Days of Rage. He is a former president of the Students for a Democratic Society, has taught at Berkeley and NYU, and is North America's editor of openDemocracy. He writes regularly for DISSENT and a variety of journals.

There will also be a roundtable with Gitlin on Thursday, Nov. 7, at 8:00 p.m. at the University Club in the Indiana Memorial Union.

NEWS FROM THE FACULTY

Professor Sarah Jane Hughes provided comments on the proposed check truncation act to the House Banking Committee and to the National Conference of Commissioners on Uniform State Law (NCCUSL). The bill would assist community bankers in dealing with the increasing number of electronic presentments of payment instruments.

STUDY ABROAD INFORMATIONAL MEETING TOMORROW

Dean Fromm and Dean Palmer will hold an international programs informational meeting on Tuesday, November 5, at noon in the Moot Court Room. They will provide students with a general introduction to the following programs:

1)Paris II exchange program;

2)ESADE (Barcelona) exchange program;

3)Bucerius (Hamburg) exchange program;

4)China University of Political Science and Law exchange program;

5)Hong Kong University exchange program;

6)London Program;

7)San Diego summer programs;

8)SPEA European Union summer program, and

9)Future programs.

All interested students are encouraged to attend.

The Office of Career Services will be holding a lunch discussion for 3Ls about the Indiana Attorney General's office on Thursday, Nov. 7, at noon in the Student Lounge.

CHILDREN AND THE LAW GROUP DISCUSS ORPHAN TRAINS TUESDAY

The Children and the Law Discussion Group will be holding a general meeting on Tuesday, Nov. 5, at noon, and will be viewing a video and discussing the topic of Orphan Trains and the historical developments in child welfare in the United States. This meeting will be held at the Child Advocacy Clinic (Beck House).

UPDATED COURSE DESCRIPTIONS FOR CONRAD

Professor Stephen Conrad has posted on his office door (room 264) updated course descriptions for both of his history courses for the spring 2003 semester.

NEWS OF RECORD

Dale Wengler, of the Class of 2003, welcomed a daughter, Emma Marie Wengler, to his family on Sunday, Oct. 27. He writes, "She has lots of hair and is extremely cute!"

CHANGE IN PROCEDURE FOR SCHEDULING EVENTS

ALL e-mail about reserving classrooms must be sent to BL-LAW-EVENTS. Debbie Eads will no longer be scheduling rooms, so it will avail you naught to drop by her office. Mail must be sent to the correct address, bl-law-events (for Outlook users) or bl-events-law@exchange.indiana.edu (for non-Outlook users). Please include the date and time of event, length of time room will be needed, classroom requested and number of people attending event. Requests should be sent at least one week before the event and include the name of the person requesting, the organization planning the event, and an e-mail address. Confirmations will be sent by reply e-mail. Thank you!

AUDIO - VIDEO SERVICES

Requests for AV services may be sent to Beth at av@exchange.indiana.edu. Please include the name of your group and the e-mail address of the contact person, a description of what you want to do, and the date, location, starting time and duration of the event. Requests must be made at least 48 hours in advance and will be confirmed by e-mail.
