BOSE MCKINNEY TO SPONSOR MOOT COURT

We are thrilled to announce a new partnership with the Indianapolis law firm of Bose McKinney & Evans LLP, who have agreed to sponsor the Law School's annual Sherman Minton Moot Court Competition. Bose McKinney recognizes the importance to law students of the opportunitiy to participate in events such as Moot Court, and their invaluable support will help sustain this thriving program.

Arguments in this year's competition begin this evening and will continue through the week until fall break, then resuming Oct. 28 for two weeks. Non-competing students are invited to drop by and listen to arguments.

EVENTS & LECTURES

TWO VIEWS: AN ENGAGEMENT OF THE COMMUNITY ON THE DEATH PENALTY

On Wednesday, Oct. 16, at 7:30 p.m., a panel discussion on the death penalty will be held at the Law School as part of a series of events, on campus and in town, examining opposing views on the death penalty. More information is available at the Web site www.twoviews.org.

On Sunday, Nov. 3, at 2:00 p.m., Professor Jeannine Bell will give a talk at Borders bookstore (in Eastland Plaza) about her new book, Policing Hatred: Law Enforcement, Civil Rights, and Hate Crime (New York University Press 2002).

Professor Marshall Leaffer presented a 2001 2002 copyright law update at the annual meeting of the Texas Bar Association and the Houston Intellectual Property Association on Oct. 28 in Galveston, Texas.

NEWS FROM STUDENT AFFAIRS OFFICE

RESULTS OF THE 29TH ANNUAL AUMNI/STUDENT/FACULTY GOLF OUTING

The Rolling Meadows "Links" golfers had a fantastic day at the annual golf outing, with numerous miraculous shots bringing into clear question the career choice of some of the "pros." More than once was the expression - "maybe we should be on the tour" overheard. Indeed, one erstwhile faculty member who said he was packing his car and heading to Florida after the outing has not been seen since. We will find out if he is teaching his class today.

The friendly competition, with a random hole "Bankers" handicap in play, found that Jake Rigney and Michael Cooley were just too good for the field. They had an excellent handicapped score of 67. Professor Dan Conkle's complaint that they

took too much time to hit their shots, held no water, although it is understood that one of HIS shots did find water! Professor Heidt's complaint involving causation, negligence, and lack of appropriate care was not understood by the rules official, so was also summarily denied. However, it must be said that Jake and MIchael did not run away with the competition. Only a stroke behind were the teams of BJ Brinkerhoff and Aaron Krolik (winning second place) and George Langendorf and Holt Hedrick (third place). Professor Daniel Conkle and David Suess (Bose McKinney attorney) sneaked by Bryan Babb (another Bose attorney this may be a hint for those who want jobs with this firm) and Len Fromm for fourth place. Here are the individual winners for speciality shots:

Closest to the PINs: the precise faculty Dan Conkle and Bob Heidt (what would you expect?)

Longest Putts: Emily Mouton and Michael Cooley (him again!)

Long Drives: Rich Baer and mighty George Langendorf (Tiger would have had no chance!)

THREE CAREER SERVICES PRESENTATIONS THIS WEEK

Join us on Tuesday, Oct. 15, at noon in room 123 for a discussion on judicial clerkships. On Thursday, Oct. 17, we will be holding a networking workshop at noon in the Student Lounge. On Friday, Oct. 18, at 12:30 p.m., there will be a workshop for graduate students on Letter Writing, Bar Exam, and Job Search Resources, also in the Student Lounge.

FALL BREAK HOURS

During fall break, the Career Services Office will be open from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. daily.

CAREER SERVICES MEETING WITH ALUMNI AFTER FALL BREAK

On Monday, Oct. 28, Career Services will be hosting a discussion with IU Associate Vice Chancellor (and former dean of admissions at the Law School) Frank Motley, and alumni Viola Taliaferro, JD'77, a judge on the Monroe County Circuit Court, and Holly Harvey, JD'97, an associate with Bunger & Robertson. This discussion will be held at noon in room 122.

DECEMBER GRADUATION FORMS

Tentative December 2002 graduates need to complete a graduation form during the week of Oct. 14 18.

SPRING 2003 REGISTRATION INFORMATION

3Ls and international students will register on Monday, Oct. 28.

2Ls will register on Tuesday, Oct. 29.

1Ls will have their spring course divisions placed in their mailboxes on Nov. 4.

As always, contact the Recorder's Office if you are unable to register at your assigned time. Also as always, the above times supersede the times assigned by the university, which you should have received by mail.

Spring class schedules, course description packets, and registration materials will be available on Wednesday, Oct. 16, outside the Recorder's Office or placed in your mailslots.

Spring 2003 registration for outside (non-law) courses starts on Thursday, Oct. 24, and continues until early November. Joint degree students need to contact their counterpart department for instructions on how to register with the other schools. Also, students requesting outside course approval need written approval from Dean Fromm before registering. These forms are on the bookshelf in the Recorder's Office.

WOMEN'S LAW CAUCUS MEETING TODAY

The Women's Law Caucus will be holding its monthly meeting today, Oct. 14, at noon in room 120. We will be discussing

possible guest speakers, the etiquette dinner, and the charity auction. New members are invited to attend.

ELS IDEA SESSION TOMORROW

All Environmental Law Society members and supporters are invited to attend the ELS Annual Idea Session on Tuesday,

Oct.15, at noon in room 124.

ELS's year is off to a strong start! The Oliver Winery event was a great success, applications are in and selection is beginning for the Pace National Environmental Moot Court competition, and our Environmental Law Career Fair is in planning. Now we want to invite the ideas and energies of all of our members to create a great year of programing and activities. What else do you think the Environmental Law Society should do this year, and/or how can we do what we do better? Possible topics of discussion include scheduling speakers, planning outings, and hosting future events. This is not an exhaustive or exclusive list, and we welcome all ideas for a fun, productive, and engaging year. Pizza will be served.

LAST PAD WINE-TASTING CLASS

Please join Phi Alpha Delta Law Fraternity and Neil Charles, wine director for Big Red Liquors, food critic, and master of wine candidate, for our final wine tasting class! BLSA GONG SHOW TICKETS GO ON SALE TOMORROW

The 21st annual Gong Show, sponsored by the Black Law Students Association, will take place Friday, Nov. 1, at Axis Nightclub, from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. Tickets will go on sale Tuesday, Oct. 8. Prices are $8 before the show, $7 with a canned good, and $10 at the door. Part of the proceeds will go toward sponsoring a family for Thanksgiving. The canned goods collected will go to a local food bank. Tickets will be sold every day except during fall break until Oct. 31. We will continue to solicit acts until October 18. International Affairs and the Office of Career Services will be hosting a career workshop for international students at 12:30 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 18, in the Student Lounge. Topics under discussion will be Letter Writing, Bar Exam, and Job Search Resources.

CONGRATULATIONS TO NEW LAW ALUMNI FELLOWS

On Friday evening, five graduates of the School of Law were inducted into the Academy of Law Alumni Fellows, in recognition of their outstanding contributions to their profession and their communities. Induction into the Academy is the highest honor the Law School bestows on its graduates. The five newest members are:

Joseph T. Bumbleburg, JD'61, a Lafayette native who is a senior member and president of the law firm of Ball Eggleston Bumbleburg McBride Walkey & Stapleton; Laura J. Cooper, JD'74, who is a professor of law at the University of Minnesota; Frederick F. Eichhorn, Jr., JD'57, who is president of the Indiana University Board of Trustees; Rufus W. McKinney, JD'56, an energy and public policy consultant who worked for many years in Washington, D.C., for the Southern California Gas Company; and Ron S. Reinstein, JD'73, a Superior Court judge in Arizona and a nationally recognized expert on DNA evidence in sex crimes.

TRIAL COMPETITION TEAM TRY-OUTS

Try-outs for the 2002-03 Trial Competition Team will take place November 1-3. Students may sign up any time between now and October 24 by contacting Coach Tanford, either in person or by e-mail at tanford@indiana.edu. The case file and other information is available on the Trial Team's web site. A mini-course in basic trial advocacy is being offered Mondays from 5:30-7:30 in room 219 for students who have not taken Trial Process.

CHANGE IN PROCEDURE FOR SCHEDULING EVENTS

ALL e-mail about reserving classrooms must be sent to BL-LAW-EVENTS. Debbie Eads will no longer be scheduling rooms, so it will avail you naught to drop by her office. Mail must be sent to the correct address, bl-law-events (for Outlook users) or bl-events-law@exchange.indiana.edu (for non-Outlook users). Please include the date and time of event, length of time room will be needed, classroom requested and number of people attending event. Requests should be sent at least one week before the event and include the name of the person requesting, the organization planning the event, and an e-mail address. Confirmations will be sent by reply e-mail. Thank you!

AUDIO - VIDEO SERVICES

Requests for AV services may be sent to Beth at av@exchange.indiana.edu. Please include the name of your group and the e-mail address of the contact person, a description of what you want to do, and the date, location, starting time and duration of the event. Requests must be made at least 48 hours in advance and will be confirmed by e-mail.
