ROUNDTABLE DISCUSSION TODAY ON FREEDOM OF SPEECH AND PRESS

A roundtable discussion on "Freedom of Speech and Freedom of the Press in Authoritarian States" will be held today, Oct. 7, 3:00 p.m. - 4:00 p.m., in the Moot Court Room. The International Law Society, Indiana University East Asian Center, School of Journalism, REEI, and the Center for the Study of Law and Democracy are sponsors. The keynote speaker will be Anthony Kuhn, Beijing reporter for the Los Angeles Times. Professor Dan Conkle will moderate, with responses by Professor Fred Cate and Professors Seok-Fang Sim (Dept. of Communication and Culture) and Steven Raymer (School of Journalism). A reception will follow.

PANEL DISCUSSION TOMORROW ON CIVIL LIBERTIES

Tomorrow (Oct. 8) at noon, the American Constitution Society presents a panel discussion on civil liberties as part of the Alliance for Justice's yearly "First Monday" events. The panelists will include Ken Falk, Legal Director of the Indiana Civil Liberties Union, our own Professor Pat Baude of the IU School of Law, and Susan Brooks, Assistant Attorney General for the Southern District of Indiana. Please join us in room 121 for a lively discussion of civil liberties post-9/11. Pizza will be provided!

JUDGE HAMILTON TO SPEAK FRIDAY

As part of a nationwide American Constitution Society program called "Sentencing and the Federal Judiciary," ACS will host Federal Judge David F. Hamilton, who will speak at noon on Friday, Oct. 11, in room 121, on the subject of federal sentencing guidelines. It's an honor for the law school to host Judge Hamilton this meeting promises to be truly informative.

TWO VIEWS: AN ENGAGEMENT OF THE COMMUNITY ON THE DEATH PENALTY

A series of events will be held on campus during the week of October 11-18 to examine opposing views on the death penalty. Note that the Oct. 16 event, a panel discussion with faculty and students, will be held at the Law School. More information is available at the Web site www.twoview.org.

NEWS FROM THE FACULTY

Professor Fred Cate testified on "Social Security Numbers in Public Records" before a special committee of the Indiana State Legislature. His book, Privacy in the Information Age, was translated and republished last week in Arabic.

Visiting Professor Steve Heyman presented a paper on "Ideological Conflict and the First Amendment" at a symposium on Law and Cultural Conflict at Chicago-Kent College of Law on Sept. 27. Proceedings of the conference, which Professor Heyman helped to organize, will be published next year in a symposium issue of the Chicago-Kent Law Review.

On Oct. 4, Professor Dawn Johnsen spoke about congressional power and federalism at Columbia Law School at the National Strategy Conference to Stop the Supreme Court's Rollback of Civil Rights.

AWARDS FOR STUDENT PAPERS ...

The Pittsburgh Intellectual Property Law Association is seeking submissions for its 2002 03 PIPLA Writing Award. This award, worth $1,000, will be given in February 2003 for an article on intellectual property written by a law student. (Note: The award is open only to articles written by law students who either attend an accredited law school within the federal judicial district of the District Court for the Western District of Pennsylvania or who have resided in that district within the last 10 years.) The deadline for submissions is Jan. 10, 2003.

The 2003 Roscoe Hogan Environmental Law Essay Contest will give a $5000 award to the author of the winning essay on this year's topic, "Brother, Can You Spare a Dime? Countering Evasion of Environmental Accountability Through Bankruptcy." Essays must be written during the academic year covered by the competition and may not be prepared as part of paid legal work outside of law school The Institute has an exclusive online publishing agreement with Res Communes, the Vermont Journal of the Environment, where the winning paper will be published. The deadline for submitting the essay is March 28; an intent-to-enter form must be submitted by Feb. 7)

The American Agricultural Law Association will hold its annual meeting and education conference on Oct. 25-26 at the Adam's Mark Hotel in downtown Indianapolis. The Farm Foundation has contributed student scholarships for law students interested in attending. These scholarships reduce the registration fee to only $45. More information is available from the Association at 515-956-4255 or www.aglaw-assn.org.

The Elaine Osborne Jacobson Award for women working in health care law is a $3,000 award for women currently enrolled in an American law school who demonstrate their commitment to a legal career of advocacy on behalf of the health care needs of children, women, the elderly, or the disabled. The deadline for application is Jan. 24, 2003. More information is available from the Office for Student Affairs.

ENVIRONMENTAL LAW SOCIETY MEETING TOMORROW

The Environmental Law Society will hold its second general meeting on Tuesday, Oct. 8, at noon in room 120. Topics to be discussed include: Oliver event wrap-up, Environmental Law Research Group projects and staff development, the national environmental moot court competition, Shifting Paradigms fall break wilderness trip, Environmental Law Career Fair, and more. BLSA GONG SHOW TICKETS GO ON SALE TOMORROW

The 21st annual Gong Show, sponsored by the Black Law Students Association, will take place Friday, Nov. 1, at Axis Nightclub, from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. Tickets will go on sale Tuesday, Oct. 8. Prices are $8 before the show, $7 with a canned good, and $10 at the door. Part of the proceeds will go toward sponsoring a family for Thanksgiving. The canned goods collected will go to a local food bank. Tickets will be sold every day except during fall break until Oct. 31. We will continue to solicit acts until October 18. DATE CHANGE FOR INTERNATIONAL STUDENT CAREER WORKSHOPS

All workshops will be held at 12:30 p.m. in the Student Lounge. If you are unable to attend these workshops, please contact Dean Palmer and he can provide you with some basic information and materials.

Friday, Oct. 11: The New York International Student Job Fair and Preparing a Resume. Deans Kearney and Palmer will hand out application materials and provide information about the New York International Student Job Fair. They will also present students with copies of the "Career Resources for International Graduate Students" booklet, and provide practical information to students about preparing a resume.

Friday, Oct. 18: Letter Writing, Bar Exams, and General Job Search Resources. Deans Kearney and Palmer will present students with information about employment letter writing and will introduce a number of important employer research tools. They will also discuss bar exams, bar preparation courses, optional curricular training (OCT), and optional practical training (OPT).

Friday, Nov. 1: Interviewing and Resumes. Deans Kearney and Palmer will conduct an interviewing skills workshop and discuss with students their resumes. They will also answer any other questions that students may have.

GRADUATE STUDENT PROFILE

Meichang Zhang graduated with an LL.B. from China University of Political Science and Law in 1987. Now an associate professor at his alma mater, he teaches legal English and conducts comparative studies of U.S. and P.R.C. law. "I am very lucky," he says "that I have the chance to study at IU. It will benefit my professional work and research activities."

The Law School's Class of 1987 will celebrate its 15th reunion in the back room at Bear's Place (1316 East Third Street) on Saturday, Oct. 12, from noon to 3:00 p.m. Faculty and staff are welcome!

MAKE YOUR CARING COUNT: LAW SCHOOL UNITED WAY CAMPAIGN KICK-OFF

This week the Law School kicks off its participation in the Indiana University United Way Campaign. Last year our faculty contributed over $12,000. The campus goal is to provide $600,000 to United Way Community Services of Monroe County, nearly one-third of the total community campaign.

New this year is an exciting matching opportunity provided by the Lilly Endowment. United Way will receive matching funds for every new Vanguard gift of $1,000 and for every 25% increase in existing Vanguards. This allows your gift to go much further.

Student involvement is also strongly encouraged. As university representatives, your role in this community is vital and the positive impact you can make immeasurable. Currently, the Kelley School of Business and the School of Geology are implementing student campaigns. Both schools are hosting new fund-raising activities as well as channeling current fund-raising events through United Way to take advantage of the Lilly matching opportunity. Students and interested groups are encouraged to contact IU Campaign Coordinator and fellow classmate Matt Pontius mpontius@indiana.edu.

The United Way campaign is extremely flexible. You can contribute to the Community Care Fund, which benefits the 24 member agencies. You can also designate funds to any member agency or to any not-for-profit organization in the Monroe County area. United Way has also developed a separate tornado relief fund to help those agencies involved in providing services to those recently affected. United Way can effectively send your gift where you want it to go. Your gift is used to build a healthy community, meet emergency needs, and nurture the next generation. In these ways, United Way touches the lives of one-third of the people in Monroe County.

Recent devastating events and the changing local economy make it especially important that we all help to meet the needs of those in our community. TRIAL COMPETITION TEAM TRY-OUTS

Try-outs for the 2002-03 Trial Competition Team will take place November 1-3. Students may sign up any time between now and October 24 by contacting Coach Tanford, either in person or by e-mail at tanford@indiana.edu. The case file and other information is available on the Trial Team's web site. A mini-course in basic trial advocacy is being offered Mondays from 5:30-7:30 in room 219 for students who have not taken Trial Process.

ALL e-mail about reserving classrooms must be sent to BL-LAW-EVENTS. Debbie Eads will no longer be scheduling rooms, so it will avail you naught to drop by her office. Mail must be sent to the correct address, bl-law-events (for Outlook users) or bl-events-law@exchange.indiana.edu (for non-Outlook users). Please include the date and time of event, length of time room will be needed, classroom requested and number of people attending event. Requests should be sent at least one week before the event and include the name of the person requesting, the organization planning the event, and an e-mail address. Confirmations will be sent by reply e-mail. Thank you!

Requests for AV services may be sent to Beth at av@exchange.indiana.edu. Please include the name of your group and the e-mail address of the contact person, a description of what you want to do, and the date, location, starting time and duration of the event.
