WELCOME TO VISITING SCHOLARS

Every year, the School of Law is honored to host a number of lawyers and scholars from around the world who come to Bloomington to do research. We welcome the following visitors for the 2002 03 academic year:

Nam Kyu Park is a professor of law at Konkuk University, Chungju-city, Korea. He will be here through February 2003. Professor Park teaches international trade law and is a well-respected specialist on GATT/WTO. He is here doing research on U.S. trade policy, and on issues related to international business transactions, particularly international business contract law.

Guangxu Jin is a professor of law at Seikei University, Tokyo. He will be here through March 2004. Professor Jin is originally from a culturally Korean part of Northeast China, where he grew up speaking both Korean and Chinese. He is a graduate of the law school at Beijing University and is an expert in Japanese criminal law and criminal policy. He is currently researching juvenile law and white collar crime in the U.S.

Byung-Moon Choe is a professor of law at Sangji University, Wonju, Korea. He will be here through August 2003. Professor Choe is a 1996 LL.M. graduate of Indiana University School of Law. He is a professor of criminal law and procedure, and is currently researching topics in U.S. criminal law.

Myeong-Kyoo Rhee is a prosecutor in the Jeon-Ju District Court in Seoul, Korea. His research is sponsored by the Korean Ministry of Justice, and he will be here through August 2003. Mr. Rhee has five years of experience as a prosecutor working mainly with cases involving environmental offences and large-scale organized crime rings operating in Korea. He is currently researching topics related to U.S. and international environmental law.

Vera Hoppe (6-month research visitor) is a doctoral candidate at the University of Cologne Faculty of Law, in Cologne, Germany. She will be here as a visiting researcher through December, conducting research on her doctoral thesis, "The Possibility of Including Foreign Parties in American Class Action Suits."

EVENTS & LECTURES

UNIVERSITY EVENTS TO COMMEMORATE SEPTEMBER 11, 2001

With the anniversary of this horrible day almost upon us, the university is planning a number of events, including a remembrance ceremony at 4:00 p.m. at Showalter Fountain. A Web site (www.iub.edu/news/sept11.html) describes all the planned events. At the Law School, we plan to have the ceremonies broadcast from New York available for students to watch in the Moot Court Room.

NEWS FROM THE FACULTY

Professor Sophia Goodman gave birth on Sept. 4 to a healthy baby girl weighing 9 pounds 6 ounces. Helen Sophia Goodman Crist joins older sisters Maggie and Miranda. All are doing well!

Professor Sarah Jane Hughes was one of five panelists briefing government agencies on cyber-money-laundering techniques and modes of detecting and deterring cyber-laundering at a private seminar at the Brookings Institution in Washington, D.C., on May 30. In addition, the second installment of a white paper on electronic payments' safety and soundness prepared by a task force that Professor Hughes chairs for the American Bar Association is about to be published by the ABA. The third and fourth installments are in progress, but not anticipated for publication until 2003.

NEWS FROM STUDENT AFFAIRS OFFICE

LAW SCHOOL GOLF OUTING

Mark your calendars now for the big 19th annual student/faculty/alumni golf outing. The date, coinciding as usual with alumni weekend, is Saturday, Oct. 12, in the morning at the Rolling Meadows golf course. Sign up in Dean Fromm's office.

STUDENT INSURANCE

Applications for insurance coverage are available in room 024. Do not go without injury and sickness insurance!

SENIORS AND GRADUATION

There will be an informational meeting on Monday, Sept. 16, at noon in room 121, for the senior class. A graduation committee will be formed. Graduation is scheduled for Saturday, May 10. Any members of the class not having hotel space for family are advised to make reservations immediately.

FACULTY COMMITTEE APPLICATIONS

Your Student Law Association invites applications for membership on the faculty committees of the school. Information sheets and an application form will be placed in all student mail slots this week for membership on these committees: Academic Regulations, Admissions, Career Services, Community Life, Educational Policy, Faculty Appointments, Instructional Technology, Library and Building, Self-Study, and Teaching. Completed applications must be submitted by Wednesday, Sept. 18, for consideration by the SLA.

DOJ SPEAKER AT LUNCHTIME SEMINAR SEPTEMBER 12

This week's lunchtime seminar on Sept. 12 will be a presentation from Dian Baker of the DOJ. Lunch will be served. If you are interested, please respond to Bruce Farrand (bfarrand@indiana.edu). All career services lunchtime seminars are held in the student lounge.

STUDENT GROUP OUTREACH FAIR

On Wednesday, Sept. 11, and Thursday, Sept. 12, from 11:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. in the Law School lobby, our many student groups will set up tables to introduce students to their work, and to invite their participation. Come learn about the many opportunities for getting involved in important legal issues, interests, and practice areas.

SKATING LESSONS

In case you have kids with ice skating interest (or harbor ambitions of your own), one of our second- year students, Tatiana Bagrianskaia, was a world class figure skater before she came to law school and is now a coach/instructor. She teaches at the local Frank Southern ice-skating rink. If you or yours are interested in lessons, e-mail Tatiana at tbag@indiana.edu. Another amazing Bloomington opportunity!

EVENTS CALENDAR / ROOM SCHEDULING

To schedule classrooms in the law building, send e-mail to bl-law-events (for Outlook users) or bl- events-law@ exchange.indiana.edu (for non-Outlook users). Please include date and time of event, length of time room will be needed, classroom requested and number of people attending event. Requests should be sent at least one week prior to event and include name of person requesting, organization planning the event and an e-mail address. Confirmations will be sent by reply e-mail.

AUDIO - VIDEO SERVICES

Requests for AV services may be sent to Beth at av@exchange.indiana.edu. Please include the name of your group and the e-mail address of the contact person, a description of what you want to do, and the date, location, starting time and duration of the event. Requests must be made at least 48 hours in advance and will be confirmed by e-mail.
