HARRY PRATTER MEMORIAL ON MAY 17
On Friday, May 17, at 2:00 p.m., the Law School will hold a memorial in honor of Professor Harry Pratter, who died on March 11. Friends and colleagues from the Law School and the university are invited to share their memories of Harry, who joined our faculty in 1950.
CONGRATULATIONS TO GRADUATES!
The Law School's recognition ceremony for graduates will be held on Saturday, May 4, at 3:00 p.m. at the IU Auditorium. Best wishes to all!

Although it is not, strictly speaking, Law School news, the ILA presents the following report from its Chicago desk in the hopes that it may be of use or of interest to those of you who follow the action on the 7th Circuit. Sources close to the ILA, recently in attendance in the courtroom, noted the following exchanges among the actors therein:
In which the Court reveals its methods:
Counsel: Your honor, I believe if you carefully parse this ...
Easterbrook: You have to understand that judges parse things while watching the weather channel in the background.
...the Court offers helpful suggestions and advice:
Bauer (with 3-5 minutes of oral argument left): I'd quit when I was ahead if I were you, but do what you want.
Bauer (as counsel first approached the podium): Since most of your arguments have already been made ...
Counsel: I will defer to your honor on that.
Bauer: That's a good thing to do.
...the Court expresses a becoming sense of fallibility:
Posner: Hard as it may be to think that the 7th circuit ever gets anything wrong, it is a conceivability.
...the Court is untroubled by the hobgoblin of foolish consistency:
Counsel: One of the things this court has said and I understand that this court is always free to say something else ...
... the Court clarifies the distinction between the federal and the state judiciary:
Posner: Everybody has a chance of getting rich; it's America, right?
Bauer: All except federal judges. If we became suddenly rich, we'd get indicted.
Counsel: I think that's only in state courts.
NEWS FROM THE FACULTY
On Friday, April 26 Professor Jim Barnes made an invited presentation at Harvard Law School to the HLS Environmental Law Society and spring reunion classes. The presentation is entitled "Environmental Protection in the 21st Century: The Past as Prologue," assessing the evolution of the environmental regulatory regime in the United States over the past 30 years, noting changes in the nature of the problems, the political climate, and the U.S. leadership role in the world and then discussing how we should approach four of the most serious problems we currently face.
The Supreme Court has granted certiorari in a case in which Professor Craig Bradley filed an amicus brief, Scheidler v. N.O.W., a RICO suit by the National Organization of Women against anti-abortion protesters. Bradley represented PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals), who fear that they may be the subject of the next RICO suit if this one holds up. Also, the first two reviews of Bradley's 1999 book, Criminal Procedure: A Worldwide Study, have just come out one in the Spring 2001 issue of the Journal of Criminal Law and Criminology and one in the International Criminal Law Review. Both are favorable.
