Luis Fuentes-Rohwer will come to IU permanently next fall from Chicago-Kent College of Law, where he has been a visiting professor teaching Election Law, Race and the Law, and American Legal History. Fuentes-Rohwer earned his bachelor's degree in psychology and Spanish at the University of Michigan, where he also earned a JD and a PhD in political science (his dissertation title was The Rise of a Concept: Judicial Independence in the American National Context, 1787 1833). Along the way, he earned a master's degree in education from Eastern Michigan University, and an LLM at Georgetown (with a thesis on The Multiple Faces of Discrimination).He will be teaching Legal Profession, Legal Process, and a Seminar on Voting Rights. His research is in the area of voting rights.
David Snyder, currently a professor at Cleveland-Marshall College of Law, and a visitor here at IU last summer, will join our faculty permanently next fall. Snyder earned a BA in history from Yale University in 1988 and a JD from Tulane, where he was first in his class. After graduating from law school, he clerked for John M. Duh‚, on the 5th Circuit Court of Appeals, and then worked as an associate for Hogan & Hartson, Washington, D.C. until 1996, when he joined the faculty at Cleveland-Marshall. He will bring a new course in Electronic Commercial Law to the School, as well as teaching contracts and various commercial law courses.. Professor Snyder has written in the area of commercial law as well as in the area of legal history.
Steven Heyman, a professor at Chicago-Kent College of Law, will be a visiting professor at IU for both semesters next year. A 1984 graduate of Harvard Law School and a 1979 graduate of Harvard College, Heyman has taught at Chicago-Kent since 1989. He has also taught at the University of Colorado at Boulder and at Vanderbilt. Professor Heyman will be teaching Criminal Law, Evidence, and a Seminar in Politics and Community. His research is in the areas of jurisprudence and constitutional theory.
SASKIA SASSEN TO GIVE CONFERENCE KEYNOTE
On April 5 (at noon in the Moot Court Room), University of Chicago sociologist Saskia Sassen will deliver the keynote address on "Globalization or Denationalization?" for the Law School's two-day symposium on Globalization and Democracy: Prospects for the Future. The symposium on April 5 and 6 marks the 10th anniversary of the Indiana Journal of Global Legal Studies, which will publish the proceedings. BROWN-BAG ON ALTERNATIVE DISPUTE RESOLUTION IN CENTRAL EUROPE
The Indiana Conflict Resolution Institute Brown-Bag Series presents "Current Developments in Alternative Dispute Resolution in Central Europe: ADR's Benefits Offered and Challenges to Implementation in the Region," a discussion with Bill Heekin, an American Bar Association consultant on alternative dispute resolution development in Belarus, Croatia, and Romania. Heekin's professional career has been mostly spent in the field of alternative dispute resolution (ADR); he has primarily served as arbitrator, mediator, or factfinder regarding the resolution of more than 700 labor disputes.
The brown-bag will take place on Tuesday, April 2, at noon, in the dean's conference room, SPEA 300. Snacks and beverages will be provided.
LAW DRAMA SOCIETY PERFORMS ON APRIL 5
The IU Law Drama Society will be performing its third annual spring play on Friday, April 5, and Saturday, April 6, at 7:30 p.m. in the Moot Court Room each night. This year's production will be a medley of short, comedic one-act plays by the renowned playwright David Ives. Join us for a fast-paced and hilarious evening of theater performed by your fellow law students.
FORMER WHITE HOUSE COUNSEL TO VISIT LAW SCHOOL APRIL 10
Beth Nolan, former counsel to President Clinton, will give a talk at the Law School on Wednesday, April 10, at noon in the Moot Court Room. The title of her talk is "Inventing Your Future, Reinventing My Past: Life with the American Constitution Society;" the new IU Law student chapter of that organization is sponsoring her visit. Before becoming counsel to Clinton in 1999, Nolan had served in a number of other capacities in his administration, including associate counsel to the president and deputy assistant attorney general for the Office of Legal Counsel. She had previously been a professor at George Washington University, teaching constitutional law and professional responsibility.
Professor Rob Fischman's article, "Stumbling to Johannesburg: The United States' Haphazard Progress Toward Sustainable Forestry Law," is now out in the most recent issue of the Environmental Law Reporter. The reference to Johannesburg identifies the location of the upcoming 2002 World Summit on Sustainable Development. The Environmental Law Reporter is publishing a series of articles by academics to evaluate the United States' progress toward sustainability since the 1992 Earth Summit in a variety of fields. Prof. Fischman's contribution dealing with forestry will be collected with the others and published in a book later this year.
FALL REGISTRATION AND SPRING EXAM NUMBERS
Fall 2002 Registration: Current 2Ls and all international students will register on Monday, April 8 and current 1Ls, on Tuesday, April 9. Registration is in the Recorder's Office, Room 022, anytime between 9:00-12:15 and 1:00-4:00. Current 1Ls should watch for a closed listing of courses that will be posted sometime late afternoon on the glass bulletin board on the ground floor near the elevator. Courses are filled on a graduation date priority basis with a random lottery for remaining openings. Registration packets and forms will be available Monday afternoon outside the Recorder's Office.
Exam numbers are also available for the spring examinations.
ELS HOLDS ADVISING MEETING FOR FALL ENVIRONMENTAL CLASSES
On Monday, April 1, at 4:00 p.m., the Environmental Law Society will host an advising session in room 124 for those considering registering for environmental law classes for the fall. The meeting will be a great opportunity to get guidance and recommendations from classmates who've taken enviro law classes you might be considering. If you have any questions like the following, you should attend:
1. How was that class?
2. What kinds of material did you cover?
3. What was the professor's style like?
4. Are there any classes I should take before taking X?
5. If I've already taken X, should I still take Y?
6. What do you think are the best enviro law classes IU Law offers?
7. Are there other environmental classes at IU (in other departments)
that are good to take?

ELS SEEKS APPLICATIONS FOR ENVIRONMENTAL LAW RESEARCH GROUP DIRECTOR
The part-time, paid director is responsible for finding projects, developing working relationships with other organizations, supervising and supporting volunteer researchers, and coordinating the research of ELRG. The term runs from May 2002 to May 2003. If you, or any other law students are interested, please pick up an application from the Career Services Office. Applications are due on April 5, and the selection will be made before the ELS summation meeting in late April.
FEMINIST LAW FORUM MEETING ON APRIL 3
There will be a Feminist Law Forum meeting at noon on Wednesday, April 3, in room 120. This is a very important meeting, because we will be talking about next year. Therefore, please come, and feel free to bring your lunch and a friend! (In fact, bring enough lunch and friends for all of us!) Please contact Anna Bednarski (abednars) with questions.
PAD MEETING ON APRIL 4
Our final meeting of the semester will be next week on Thursday, April 4, at Kilroy's at 5:00 p.m. We'll be discussing the PAD convention, some fundraising ideas, and next year's schedule. Come out and schmooze!
ATTENTION, GRADUATING STUDENTS!
Believe it or not, it is time to begin the planning for the graduation display for the lobby. As we have done in the past, we want to do a collage of pictures, memorabilia and clippings regarding your three years of law school. We have already gathered a few things, but the real source of such items is all of you. We will return all the items to you following graduation. Here is what we would like to include:
Pictures (students, events, weddings, children) depicting some aspect of your lives while law students.
Memorabilia including law school tee shirts, cups, posters from events that occurred during the three years. Plaques, trophies or awards won can be included.
Clippings from any newspaper article about you, a fellow third year, or the law school during the three years. These can be local paper clippings or from your hometown. Be sure to include what newspaper the article is from and the date of the article.
Anything that has significance to you, will fit in the display case, and is in reasonably good taste can be included.
Please get these items to us as soon as possible. Each item must have a completed form attached that includes your name and the address where you want it returned. You can pick up these forms at the Reference Desk or in the Library Office. For pictures, include who or what it is, and what year it was taken. All comments or reminiscences must be signed, although we will not necessarily use your name in the display. We reserve the right to omit any item if needed.
GIVE ITEMS TO THE LIBRARIANS IN THE REFERENCE OFFICE OR TO THE ASSISTANT TO THE LAW LIBRARY DIRECTOR. To insure that we have all the necessary information to return the items, do not just leave them in the office or at the Circulation Desk.
