A LAWYER'S VIEW OF GENETIC ENGINEERING

Professor Yvonne Cripps will inaugurate the Harry T. Ice Chair with a lecture titled "Combinations & Recombinations: A Lawyer's View of the Science and Art of Genetic Engineering" this Wednesday, Feb. 27, at 4:00 p.m. in the Moot Court Room. Professor Cripps was formerly on the faculty at Cambridge University, and her 1980 book Controlling Technology: Genetic Engineering and the Law was the first comprehensive treatment of the subject. Don't miss this exciting talk!

EVENTS & LECTURES

AFTERNOON TEA SERIES SCHEDULE CHANGE: AXIS OF EVIL

Because of the Ice Lecture on Feb. 27, the Afternoon Tea discussion has been moved to Tuesday, Feb. 26, at 4:00 p.m., and the topic has been changed to "The Implications of the Axis of Evil". Discussion will be led in the Student Lounge by Prof. David Fidler. Faculty and students are encouraged to come. Tea, coffee, cake, and cookies will be provided.

SPORTS LAW TALK

Dave Taylor, a partner at Jennings Taylor Wheeler & Bouwkamp, Indianapolis,

will speak at noon on Tuesday, Feb. 26, at the Law School. Mr. Taylor is one of the leading Major League Baseball sports agents in the Midwest. He has represented over 40 professional baseball players in the past 10 years, including 18 currently nationwide. Mr. Taylor is well respected in the professional baseball industry and is known as an excellent contract negotiator for high school and college Major League Baseball draft picks. He has conducted seminars in Sports Law at various universities in the Midwest and is a member of the ABA's Sports and Entertainment Law Practice and the Sports Lawyers Association.

KRAUSS TO SPEAK AT CONFLICT RESOLUTION BROWN-BAG

The Indiana Conflict Resolution Institute Brown-Bag Series presents "Is ADR the Missing Ingredient in Public Meetings?", a talk by John L. Krauss, senior fellow, Indiana University Center for Urban Policy and the Environment. Among his other accomplishments, Mr. Krauss is an attorney, facilitator, mediator, and arbitrator. Additionally, Mr. Krauss is an adjunct associate professor at SPEA and an adjunct associate professor of law at Indiana University School of Law. He teaches graduate level courses in mediation, urban decision-making, law and public policy, and urban management.

His talk will explore the issue of whether there is a role for mediation in state government public policy making. He will discuss several ideas and concepts such as shared neutrals, a state office of mediation/conflict resolution, and an ombudsman for helping to facilitate intergovernmental issues.

Mr. Krauss will speak on Thursday, Feb. 28, from noon to 1:15 p.m., in SPEA room 204 (behind 201). Snacks and beverages will be provided.

HAMILTON ADDRESSES INTERNATIONAL LAW & WAR ON TERROR

The International Law Society is happy to announce that it will be hosting IU Law School alum, former US Representative Lee H. Hamilton on Monday, March 4, at 4:30 p.m. in Room 121. Currently, Lee Hamilton is both the director of the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars in Washington, D.C., and director of the Center on Congress here at Indiana University. Before becoming director of these two organizations, Lee Hamilton served 34 years as a US Congressman from Indiana's 9th District. While serving in the US Congress, Lee Hamilton distinguished himself in the area of foreign affairs and served as chairman of the House Committee on Foreign Affairs during the 103rd Congress. We gladly invite the students, faculty, staff and the Bloomington community to hear Lee Hamilton speak about current topics in US Foreign Affairs policy and international law, specifically the war on terror.

ABERNATHY TO DISCUSS FCC CHANGE

On March 4 in the Moot Court Room, the Federal Communications Law Journal will host an afternoon discussion on telecommunications regulation and policy. Commissioner Kathleen Abernathy will debut her forthcoming article, "My View from the Doorstep of FCC Change," and present her insights on the principles important to the FCC's governance of the telecommunications industry. After her presentation, there will be an opportunity to ask questions. Refreshments will be served.

NEWS FROM THE FACULTY

Professor Buxbaum participated in a symposium on international litigation at the University of Texas School of Law. Her paper was on the gathering of evidence abroad for use in U.S. civil litigation.

PILF SINGING FOR SUMMER SALARIES FUNDRAISER

Once again this year PILF is sponsoring "Singing for Summer Salaries." You may recall Craig Bradley's performance last year; so far, the leading contenders to sing this year are Susan Williams, Jeff Stake, and Charlie Geyh. The final bidding and performance are scheduled for this Tuesday, Feb. 26, at noon in the Moot Court Room. All donations go to support students in public interest summer clerkships.

TOUR GUIDE VOLUNTEERS NEEDED

The Admissions Office is seeking student volunteers to participate in the Tour Guide Program. As tour guides, volunteers give prospective applicants and visitors a tour of the school, take them to class, and answer general questions about the school, program, and community. If you are interested in participating, please stop by the Admissions Office, Room 230, to pick up a schedule. MOOT COURT COMPETITION RESUMES

Beginning Monday, Feb. 18, the Moot Court Competition will resume. Arguments will be every evening during the week at 6:00 and 8:00 p.m. The final round is on March 1, at 7:00 p.m. Please come and support your classmates: This is an excellent opportunity to see oral argument at its finest!
