TALK ON ISLAMIC LAW TODAY
Asian Pacific-Islander American Law Student Association (APALSA) and Amnesty International Present: Dr. Nazif Shahrani, chair of the department of Near Eastern Languages and Cultures will speak today, Nov. 5, 2001, at noon, in room 125, about the Taliban's application of the hudud laws (for example, stoning adulterers, cutting limbs of thieves, or the banning of television).
DEATH PENALTY OPPONENT TO SPEAK FRIDAY
Bud Welch, an internationally known death penalty opponent and recipient of the
2001 Frederick Douglass Award, will speak on Friday, Nov. 9, at 7:00 p.m., at the Unitarian Universalist Church. His talk, titled "From Rage to Reconciliation: A Personal Journey," is based on his experience as the father of a victim of the Oklahoma City bombing in 1995.

TELECOMMUNICATIONS POLICY COURSE
The following course, offered by the department of telecommunications (not the Law School), may be of interest to some law students:
T635 Comparative Telecommunications Policy (Pre-requisite: T504 or consent of instructor.)
This course will compare telecommunications policy and policymaking in the U.S. with the policies and policy systems of other nations. We will cover policy issues related to new technologies such as the Internet and broadband. Some of the regions or countries that will be examined include the US, some Latin American and Asian countries as well as regions like Eastern and Western Europe, among others. Students will research several countries and identify how the issues discussed in class are being handled by the regulatory entities in those countries. Students will write a major research paper and will seek a conference or journal to which they can submit their work.
