THE CLASS OF 2004

This year's entering JD class has outstanding academic credentials, with a median GPA of 3.45 and a median LSAT score of 161 (86th percentile).

Some other facts about the Class of 2004:

. Our 214 1Ls hold undergraduate degrees from 98 institutions . 59% come from the state of Indiana; the other 41% hail from 29 different states and two foreign countries. . 32% are age 25 or older . 13% have completed course work beyond an undergraduate degree.

The Law School also welcomed 65 students in the graduate program. This is an extraordinary group of talented individuals representing 15 countries.

EVENTS & LECTURES

LEXCEL: DEMYSTIFYING THE CLASSROOM, PART II

Students and faculty will discuss preconceptions and realities of the Law School experience on Monday, Sept. 10, at noon in the Moot Court Room.

FACULTY NEWS

On Aug. 17, Professor Crosson filed the respondent's brief in her seventh case before the Supreme Court, City of Los Angeles v. Alameda Books. Arguments are scheduled in the case for late November or early December.

During the past summer, Professor Stake published two articles: "Are We Buyers or Hosts? A Memetic Approach to the First Amendment," 52 Ala. L. Rev. 1213, and "Can Evolutionary Science Contribute to Discussions of Law?," 41 Jurimetrics 379. He makes no claims as to the utility of either.

Liz Larson, assistant librarian and lecturer in law, spent the month of May working at Adilet Higher Law School in Almaty, Kazakhstan. She gave a lecture on administrative law in the U.S., and, she adds, "Each and every day, I met for tea with different groups of students in order to give them an opportunity to practice their English and ask questions about the U.S. and legal education in America." She also translated into Russian the titles, authors, subject matter, and publishing information of every English-language book in Adilet's library, then took an inventory of Adilet's English-language materials so that Professor Hoffman can figure out which new books to buy for Adilet with the grant money earmarked for that purpose. While in the area, she also took a three-day trip to Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan.

STUDENT NEWS

It is a pleasure to report that 2L Paul Newman recently published a book entitled Linguistic Fieldwork (co-editor, Dr. Martha Ratliff of Wayne State University) with Cambridge University Press. During the summer, he also completed an article on Hausa lexicography (co-author, Dr. Roxana Ma Newman), which was invited by the South African journal Lexikos.

NEWS FROM STUDENT AFFAIRS OFFICE

STUDENT ORGANIZATIONAL TABLES IN THE LOBBY

The student organizations in the Law School will staff tables in the lobby during the noon hour on Tuesday, Sept. 4, to answer questions about their respective groups and provide information.

GRADUATION PLANNING MEETING FOR 3L

There will be a meeting for third-year students regarding graduation and bar exam matters on Wednesday, Sept. 5, at noon in the Moot Court Room. Planning for some aspects of graduation weekend needs to start now. Class decisions regarding a few issues will be made at this meeting. Any further graduation meetings will be through committees formed from this meeting.

NEWS FROM CAREER SERVICES

How do you decide what to do with your legal education? How can you choose among the many options available to you: litigation, securities, bankruptcy, labor; big law firms, state agencies, small law firms, federal agencies, medium-sized law firms, not-for-profit organizations, public interest, public defenders, public law how can you know what is best for you? Attend the First Annual Career Symposium on Sept. 6 from 4 to 8 p.m. and find out.

NEWS FROM THE RECORDER'S OFFICE

SCHEDULE ADJUSTMENT

Students wishing to adjust their course schedules need to report to the Recorder's Office. A drop/add form will be issued that will need to be signed by the faculty member and Dean Fromm. The late program change fee is $22.00 for each course dropped and added. Next week will be the beginning of the declining refund schedule, and the grade of "W" will be recorded for the dropped course. Updated transcripts reflecting the fall drop/add and summer grades will be available starting on Sept. 10.

NEWS FROM STUDENT ORGANIZATIONS

PHI DELTA PHI

Phi Delta Phi will be having an organizational meeting for both potential and returning members on Tuesday, Sept. 11, at noon in room 125. At the meeting, the drawing advertised at the PDP table during club day will take place.

OUTLAW

Outlaw will be holding its first meeting of the year on Tuesday, Sept. 4, at noon in room 216. Things to be discussed are what we want to do this year, election of new officers, coming up with a proposed budget, and anything anyone else wants to bring up. ANNOUNCEMENTS

2002 MOOT COURT COMPETITION

Applications are now being accepted for membership on this year's Jessup Moot Court team. The team will consist of four or five students and will be coached by Professor Buxbaum. As stated on the Jessup home page (www.ilsa.org/jessup/jessup02/index.html), the topic for this year's competition is (1) state regulation of content on the Internet and (2) cyber-terrorism, or international Internet mischief. During the fall semester, team members will produce the written memorial; oral arguments will take place during the spring semester.

All applications are welcome: Both previous moot court experience and relevant course work will be considered, but neither is required. Priority will be given to upperclass students. Please submit a current resume and a statement of interest (covering relevant experience, reasons for interest in the competition, and commitment to study of international law) to Dean Fromm no later than Monday, Sept. 10; applications will be reviewed by him and a faculty committee.

TOUR GUIDES NEEDED

The Admissions Office is seeking student volunteers to participate in the Tour Guide Program. As a Tour Guide, volunteers give prospective applicants and visitors a tour of the school, take them to class, and answer general questions about the school, program, and community. If you are interested in participating, please stop by the Admissions Office, room 230, to pick up a schedule. RESEARCH ASSISTANT WANTED: PROFESSOR CATE

Professor Cate is looking for one or two research assistants with excellent writing and editing skills. The research will involve privacy and other information and free speech issues, but no prior substantive knowledge of these areas is required. If interested, please e-mail a resume or leave one in his mailbox.

To schedule classrooms in the law building, send e-mail to bl-law-events (for Outlook users) or bl- events-law@ exchange.indiana.edu (for non-Outlook users). Please include date and time of event, length of time room will be needed, classroom requested, and number of people attending event. Requests should be sent at least one week prior to event and include name of person requesting, organization planning the event, and an e-mail address. Confirmations will be sent by reply e-mail.

AUDIO - VIDEO SERVICES

Requests for AV services may be sent to Beth at av@exchange.indiana.edu. Please include the name of your group and the e-mail address of the contact person, a description of what you want to do, and the date, location, starting time and duration of the event. Requests must be made at least 48 hours in advance and will be confirmed by e-mail.
