3L'S ARGUE AT SEVENTH CIRCUIT IN CHICAGO

David Bayt and Ian Stewart faced a panel of judges at the Seventh Circuit Thursday, April 12, where they argued on behalf of two different clients whose criminal appeals they had briefed. The panel, which included Judges Frank Easterbrook, Kenneth Ripple, and Ann Williams, grilled the students before taking their cases under advisement.

According to Stewart, "It felt like the past three years of law school all led to the point where Judge Ripple asked me my first question during the argument." He adds, "Towards the end of the last week, as the argument got closer, it could be pretty nerve-wracking. But it was the perfect culmination of my law school experience. I think I had a smile plastered to my face for the rest of the day when the argument was over."

The students are part of a Federal Appellate Clinic supervised by Professors Lahn and Robel.

PROTECTIVE ORDER PROJECT RECEIVES LEADERSHIP AWARD IN PERSONAL SAFETY

Every year, the Commission on Personal Safety presents an award to an organization that advances personal safety at Indiana University. This year, the Protective Order Project has been selected to receive the Dr. Phyllis R. Klotman Leadership Award in Personal Safety. The award will be presented at the COMU Awards Ceremony on Monday, April 16, starting at 4:30 p.m. in the IMU Frangipani Room.

POST-GRADUATE LAW FELLOWSHIPS AVAILABLE

The dean, faculty, and administration of the Law School offer to graduating students an extraordinary opportunity to work with selected faculty, administrators, and community organizations for a brief time after graduation through the Post-Graduate Law Fellowships, for which a stipend of $1,000 will be paid.

These Law Fellowships are designed to be flexible in structure and format in order to meet the needs of the Fellows. Most Fellows will spend approximately 15 to 20 hours per week for four weeks during the early summer working on significant research projects. Most fellowships will run from early May to early June, but the schedule can be modified to meet the Law Fellows' circumstances and scheduling needs.

Applicants should feel free to suggest research topics and/or request the opportunity to work with specific faculty members/administrators/organizations. Expressing a preference will not adversely affect your application in any way, even if that specific person or organization decides not to participate in the Fellowship program.

All third year graduating students are eligible to apply. Special consideration will be given to:

1.Applicants with demonstrated financial need, and/or

2.Applicants who have not yet obtained permanent employment.

If you have any questions, please speak to Dean Kearney or Dean Fromm. The deadline for applications is WEDNESDAY, APRIL 18, 2001.

NEWS FROM THE FACULTY

Professor Kevin Brown is currently visiting at Adilet Law School in Almaty, Kazakhstan. He will deliver lectures on an Introduction to American Criminal Law and an Introduction to American Law and Religion.

Professor Fred Cate joined Walter Cronkite, President Bush, Senator Clinton, and Attorney General Ashcroft on the program of the American Society of Newspaper editors' annual meeting in Washington. He taught a one-day tutorial on privacy law at the annual Experian Law Forum in Key West. He spoke to the annual meeting of the Indiana Library Federation in Indianapolis on intellectual freedom issues. And he was elected to the 24-member Senate of Phi Beta Kappa (other senators include Dr. Vartan Gregorian, President of the Carnegie Corporation; Dr. Joseph Gordon, Dean of Undergraduate Education at Yale; Donald Lamm, former Chairman of Norton Publishing; and Dr. Catharine Stimpson, Dean of the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences at New York University).

Associate Dean Lauren Robel presented a paper, "Anastasoff, Unpublished Opinions, and the Meaning of Precedent," at the National Symposium for State Appellate Judges in Indianapolis last week.

NEWS FROM STUDENT AFFAIRS OFFICE

PETERS SCHOLARSHIP APPLICATIONS AVAILABLE

Applications are now available in room 024 for the Glenn D. Peters Law School Scholarship Fund. Applicants must be permanent residents of the Northern District of Indiana for the United States District Court--this basically means north of Indianapolis. While financial need can be a factor, greater weight is assigned to academic achievement and involvement in quality extracurricular activities. Application deadline is June 1, 2001.

HONOR, GLORY, MONEY!!

Dust off that seminar paper or that law journal note or perhaps even a moot court brief! There likely is some writing contest in the country that awaits your submission. Take a look at the bulletin board across the hallway from room 024 for descriptions of many of these contests. There is also a Web site dedicated to collecting all of these, at: http://www.people.memphis.edu/~law/. Many of our former law students have won prizes, one for $4,000!!! A little extra work on your part could be profitable.

SPRING EXAM SCHEDULE

Exam schedules with room assignments will be placed in student mailboxes Monday of next week. The exam schedule is also accessible from the IU Law School home page. Do NOT use the exam schedule on INSITE.

EXAM NUMBERS are available for the spring exam period.

SUMMER 2001/FALL 2001

Summer and fall class schedules are accessible from the IU Law School home page. Individual course selections for the summer and fall sessions will be again placed in your mailboxes early next week. Carefully check the summer session placement of your hours for financial aid purposes. If you have any changes, please notify our office on or before Wednesday, April 18.

LAW JOURNAL RELEASES

Law journal release forms were placed in 1Ls mailboxes on Friday and should be submitted to our office.

NEWS FROM STUDENT ORGANIZATIONS

MOOT COURT APPLICATIONS DUE FRIDAY

Sherman Minton Moot Court Competition applications are due by 5:00 p.m. next Friday, April 20. Participation in Moot Court is required for serving on the board in your third year. The Competition is a great way to meet and network with actual judges and legal practicioners. Over 200 alumni return to the law school each year to judge arguments. Law firms and other legal employers expect Moot Court experience, and contestants have even been offerred jobs by those judging arguments. If you have not received one, applications will be available outside the Moot Court office (across from the mailbox area) throughout the week. Place completed applications in the envelope on the bulletion board next to the office door. You do NOT have to specify a preferred partner, but if you do, both contestants must submit a separate application. Submit questions to wwarf@indiana.edu.

To schedule classrooms in the law building, send email to bl-law-events (for Outlook users) or bl- events-law@ exchange.indiana.edu (for non-Outlook users). Please include date and time of event, length of time room will be needed, classroom requested and number of people attending event. Requests should be sent at least one week prior to event and include name of person requesting, organization planning the event and an email address. Confirmations will be sent by reply email.

AUDIO - VIDEO SERVICES

Requests for AV services may be sent to Beth at av@exchange.indiana.edu. Please include the name of your group and the e-mail address of the contact person, a description of what you want to do, and the date, location, starting time and duration of the event. Requests must be made at least 48 hours in advance and will be confirmed by email.
