CONFERENCE ON LAW AND MORALITY
The Law School will be hosting a conference next Friday, April 6, in the Moot Court Room, on Moralities of the Public Sphere: Law, Politics, and Popular Culture. The first panel will convene at 9:00 a.m., and a reception in the third-floor faculty lounge will close the proceedings. The conference is free and open to the public.
The first panel, Politics as Culture as Politics, will include presentations by Catherine Stimpson, of NYU and Fedwa Malti-Douglas, of Indiana University. The second panel, Law, Politics, and Morality in Popular Discourse, will feature Kathleen Woodward, of the University of Washington, Jeffrey Isaacs, from IU's political science department, and the law school's own Dan Conkle, who will speak on "Religion, Politics, and the 2000 Presidential Election." The final panel will be devoted to Alternative Legal Narratives/ Putting Narrative on Trial. Judith Roof, of Michigan State University, Susan Jeffords, of the University of Washington, and Austin Sarat, of Amherst College, will present papers. AUTHOR MEETS READER PANEL ON BIOETHICS
The Indiana University School of Law Bloomington is pleased to announce an upcoming "Author Meets Readers" panel featuring Margaret Somerville, the Gale Professor of Law and Director of the Centre for Medicine, Ethics and Law at McGill University. Professor Somerville will be in residence April 2- 12, 2001 as the George P. Smith, II Distinguished Visiting Professor of Law. This event has been approved for 2 CLE credits in ethics.
The "Author Meets Readers" panel will be held at the Law School on Thursday, April 5, from 5:00-7:00 p.m. Presentations will be based on chapters from Professor Somerville's most recent book, The Ethical Canary: Science, Society and the Human Spirit. A variety of ethical issues in health care will be discussed, including the ethics of euthanasia, imposing treatment on seriously ill children, and the ethics of human cloning. Presenters include Professor George P. Smith II of The Catholic University of America School of Law; Professor David Smith, Director of IU's Poynter Center; and Law School faculty members Yvonne Cripps, the Harry T. Ice Professor of Law, and Roger Dworkin, the Robert A. Lucas Professor of Law. The event is open to the public, and there is no charge. Sign-in sheets will be available at the door for CLE registrants.

INTERNATIONAL LEGAL PERSPECTIVES ON BIOTECHNOLOGY

NOTED CONSTITUTIONAL SCHOLAR BARNETT TO SPEAK TUESDAY
The Federalist Society is pleased to sponsor Professor Randy Barnett from Boston University, who will be speaking on Tuesday, April 3, at 12:15 p.m. in the Moot Court Room. He will speak on "An Originalism for Nonoriginalists," a topic he knows well since he wrote a law review article on it. (45 Loyola Law Review 611 (1999)). Food and drinks will be provided. PROFESSIONALISM PROGRAM WEDNESDAY: PRO BONO SERVICE
The final optional session of the first-year professionalism program will be on Weds., April 4, at noon in the Moot Court Room. The program will explore the ethical obligation to provide pro bono services and discuss how to become involved in pro bono work while in law school.
ALUMNUS SONGER TO HAVE BOOK-SIGNING SATURDAY
The Hon. Hugo C. "Chad" Songer, JD'60, will be signing copies of his book Dufftown at Barnes and Noble on Saturday, April 7, from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. Before retiring in 1996, Judge Songer had presided over the Dubois County Circuit Court. He is a member of the State Board of Law Examiners and past president of the IU Law Alumni Association. Dufftown is a memoir of life in a small Indiana town during the years before the Second World War.

PETERS SCHOLARSHIP APPLICATIONS AVAILABLE
Applications are now available in room 024 for the Glenn D. Peters Law School Scholarship Fund. Applicants must be permanent residents of the Northern District of Indiana for the United States District Court--this basically means north of Indianapolis. While financial need can be a factor, greater weight is assigned to academic achievement and involvement in quality extracurricular activities. Application deadline is June 1, 2001.
HONOR, GLORY, MONEY!!
Dust off that seminar paper or that law journal note or perhaps even a moot court brief! There likely is some writing contest in the country that awaits your submission. Take a look at the bulletin board across the hallway from room 024 for descriptions of many of these contests. There is also a Web site dedicated to collecting all of these, at: http://www.people.memphis.edu/~law/. Many of our former law students have won prizes, one for $4,000!!! A little extra work on your part could be profitable.

"TOWN MEETING" WITH DEAN AMAN MONDAY
SLA invites all students to a meeting with Dean Aman on Monday, April 2, at noon in the Moot Court Room. The dean will speak on the current state of the law school and other topics of concern to students and will then answer questions from the audience. Pizza will be provided.
OUTREACH FOR LEGAL LITERACY MEETING THURSDAY
There will be a mandatory meeting for all members of the Outreach for Legal Literacy program on Thursday, April 5 at 7:00 p.m. (room TBA). Dinner will be provided by the Big Kahuna, Professor Orenstein! The Indiana University Conflict Resolution Services and Community Conflict Resolution Program is sponsoring a "Week Without Violence" April 2 5. Everyone is inviting in participating in the programs and discussions throughout the week regarding violence prevention and nonviolent conflict resolution. IUSA SUPREME COURT ACCEPTING APPLICATIONS
The Supreme Court of IUSA is now accepting applications for associate justices. You may find the application in the IMU, room 387 or online at www.indiana.edu/~court/applications.html. Requests should be sent at least one week prior to event and include name of person requesting, organization planning the event and an email address. Confirmations will be sent by reply email.
