FRENCH AMBASSADOR WILL VISIT THURSDAY
THE STATE OF THE EUROPEAN UNION AND THE PRIORITIES OF THE FRENCH PRESIDENT
On Thursday, Oct. 26, 5:00 p.m. in the Moot Court Room, His Excellency Francois Bujon de l'Estang, the Ambassador of France to the US, will deliver a lecture entitled "The State of the European Union and the Priorities of the French President." This event is sponsored by the International Law Society with cooperation from the Departments of West European Studies and French and Italian.
France has the responsibility of the Presidency of the European Union until the end of this year. This is a crucial time for Europe. Negotiations are under way which should transform the institutions and the functioning of the European Union prior to its enlargement. At the same time, governments and the European Central Bank are confronting the new situation created by the adoption of a common currency, which is transforming the European economic landscape with important implications for trade and business worldwide. The French Ambassador will address these issues and, more generally, give his views on this period of important transition towards a more united Europe.
Ambassador Bujon de l'Estang has served as Ambassador to the United States since 1995. A graduate of the Institut d'Etudes Politique de Paris, the
Ecole Nationale d'Administration, and the Harvard Business School, he has dedicated himself to government service and work in the French nuclear industry. The Ambassador was first appointed to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 1966, as a special advisor to the staff of President Charles de Gaulle, and also served as Senior Advisor for Diplomatic Affairs, Defense and Cooperation, under Jacques Chirac from 1986-1988. He has been assigned to embassy postings in the US, the UK, and Canada. In the private sector,
among numerous corporate positions, he has served as President and CEO of COGEMA'S US operations and on the boards of several companies.
HON. NATHANIEL JONES WILL TALK TUESDAY
CIVIL RIGHTS IN THE 21ST CENTURY
On Tuesday, Oct. 24, BLSA will host the Honorable Nathaniel Jones of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 6th Circuit as he visits the Law School. He'll be addressing the student body at Noon in the Moot Court Room. His talk will be entitled, "Civil Rights in the 21st Century."
Judge Jones has authored numerous articles and papers and has been the recipient of many honors and awards. He also has made several trips to South Africa to participate as a trial observer, lecturer, and to observe the first ever South African democratic election.
NEWS FROM THE FACULTY
Professor Fred Cate conducted a CLE program on privacy for the legal departments of Sabre and Travelocity in Dallas, spoke to the annual meeting of the Direct Marketing Association in New Orleans, and attended the third presidential debate in St. Louis as a guest of the Commission on Presidential Debates.
Professor Sarah Jane Hughes gave a paper at the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago's Workshop on Promoting the Use of Electronic Payments: Considering Future Requirements on Oct. 11, in Chicago. The paper was entitled: "Promoting the Use of Electronic Payments: What Role Will/Can Consumer Protection Play?" In addition, the paper will be published by the Bank with the proceeding of the workshop later this year.
Professor Dawn Johnsen participated in a panel discussion of "Executive Power After the Clinton Administration" at the annual meeting of the Administrative Law Section of the American Bar Association in Washington, D.C. on Oct. 12.
Professor Jeff Stake and the IU School of Law hosted the Third Annual conference of the Society for Evolutionary Analysis in Law (SEAL). The conference was hailed by many of the SEAL members as a resounding success. SEAL and Jeff Stake thank Dean Aman for hosting the reception, Dean Robel for her friendly-tone-setting welcome to the participants, members of the faculty for joining us in some of our presentations, Marjorie Young and Diana Watts for superb help in all manner of last minute details, and especially Jan Turner for taking such a constructive role in the critical logistical and budgetary planning and in actually making personally sure we had excellent food to eat.

LIFE AFTER LAW SCHOOL
The Indianapolis Bar Association will present a program "Life After Law School" at 3:00 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 26 in the Moot Court Room. Representatives from the Young Lawyers Section will meet with students in roundtable discussions about lawyering, professionalism, and the benefits of bar membership.

SUMMER PROGRAM 2001 OPPORTUNITY AND MEETING
On Monday, Oct. 23, at 4:30 p.m., in Room 121, there will be a meeting to discuss a special opportunity to go to summer school in Europe for three weeks (May 13 to June 1) and earn 4 credits. This program is conducted by SPEA, taught by SPEA and Business faculty, but the credits can apply to a law degree. The Graduate Course, entitled "Public Policy and Commerce in the European Union," will be conducted in Paris, Brussels, and Berlin. Come to the meeting to learn the details. This program is an especially good opportunity for current first year students.
NEWS FROM THE RECORDER'S OFFICE
SPRING REGISTRATION
Students wishing to take outside courses for graduate credit need to submit their written requests to Dean Fromm and will need to process this course registration through the University starting on Oct. 19.
In-house registration will take place in the Recorder's Office from 9:00 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. and 1:00 p.m. to4:00 p.m. on the following days:
Current 3Ls, MCL, CERT, LLM and SJD - Monday, Oct. 23
Current 1Ls - Tuesday, Oct. 24
Individual course divisions will be placed in your mailboxes no later than Monday, Oct. 23. You will be required to complete a form for our office and update information for the University Registrar's Office.
Current 2Ls - Wednesday, Oct. 25
Watch the grade board on Tuesday, Oct. 24, for a listing of closed courses from the 3Ls registration. Any "writing", Trial Process section, or seminars will require an alternate selection on your registration form. Registration materials will be available in the hallway in front of the Recorder's Office starting on Friday, Oct. 20. Updated class schedule grids and a numerical listing of courses for registration are included in this packet.
Registration is not on a first-come basis but on a graduation priority basis with a random lottery for remaining openings. Exceptions to this policy may be made for "writing" courses, seminars, clinics, skills training courses, and courses suggesting or requiring pre-requisites. So, being "first in line" is not important, until classes begin in the fall, and we are filling spaces based on the "wait" or "alternate" lists.

THEFT OF THE GREAT PUMPKIN
Please join the Law and Drama Society as they present "The Theft of the Great Pumpkin" Monday, Oct. 23 at 12:15 p.m. in the Moot Court Room. This is the play performed for approximately 15 Bloomington 5th- grade classes as part of the Outreach for Legal Literacy Program. Come see your talented classmates!!! MULTIDISCIPLINARY PRACTICE DISCUSSION TUESDAY
Mark your calendars for the Business and Law Society's next event!!!! On Tuesday, Oct. 24, at 7:00 p.m., in Room 736 at the Kelley School of Business, Bob Lattas will be moderating a panel discussion on the issue of Multidisciplinary Practice (MDP).
On the panel will be practitioners and academics from both the accounting and law professions to discuss the MDP issue. These include Professor Steve Johnson of the law school, Professor David Greene of the Business School, Pat Burns, CPA and partner at Katz, Sapper, & Miller and Jim Riley, Chair of the Indiana State Bar Association, Committee on Multidisciplinary Practice.
MDP is a *hot* debate among the American Bar Association (ABA), the Securities Exchange Commission (SEC), and the Independence Standards Board (ISB). This is an excellent opportunity to network with members of the business and legal profession. Food and appropriate libations will be provided afterwards. ILS INFORMATIONAL TALK ON INTERNATIONAL PROGRAMS
On Wednesday, Oct. 25 at 12:10 p.m. in Room 120, the International Law Society is hosting an informational talk on International Programs at IU. Dean Fromm will discuss International Programs in Paris, Spain, London, and other international destinations. All students interested in adding a bit of international spice to your law school career shouldn't miss this.
BLSA GONG SHOW ACTS NEEDED PLEASE NOTE DATE CHANGE
The Black Law Students Association (BLSA) will now be having its annual
Gong Show at Axis nightclub (formerly MARS) on Friday, Nov. 10
from 6:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. The Gong Show is a talent/variety show,
and the gives law students the opportunity to showcase whatever talents they are not afraid to display before their peers. Singers, dancers, musicians, comedians, poets... everyone is welcome. There will be cash prizes and unlimited entertainment. If you are interested in participating in the Show, email Shontrai Irving (sirving). Tickets will be sold in the law school lobby beginning Oct. 24. Come show your talents!

BLSA and the Intellect are holding a Yoplait Yogurt top drive in order to support Breast Cancer research. If you, your friends, or your family eat Yoplait Yogurt, please keep the tops. We will have a drop box outside of the BLSA office on the ground level of the law school (across from the SLA Bookstore). Please aid us in our efforts to support Breast Cancer by bringing in your Yoplait Yogurt lids and dropping them in the collection box.
