MAYOR FERNANDEZ WILL VISIT TUESDAY
BUILDING A CAREER IN LAW AND PUBLIC AFFAIRS
The Honorable John R. Fernandez, Mayor of the City of Bloomington, will address students and faculty in Room 124 of the Law School on Tuesday, Sept. 12 at Noon. Among other topics, Fernandez will discuss his career path and the merits of coupling a law degree with a Master's in Public Affairs.
First elected in 1996, Mayor Fernandez serves as the chief elected official for Bloomington. The City of Bloomington's operations include 620 employees
and a $53 million annual budget. He was re-elected to a second term in 1999. In his capacity as Mayor, Fernandez serves as a member of the Electronic Commerce & Internet Technology Taskforce for the United States Conference of Mayors. He also is a member of the Indiana Land Resources Council and the Indiana Advisory Commission on Intergovernmental Relations.
Prior to his election as Mayor, Fernandez was an attorney with Bingham
Summers Welsh & Spilman's Bloomington office from 1994-1996, where he specialized in corporate and commercial litigation. After graduating from law school, Fernandez served as a law clerk for Indiana Supreme Court Justice Roger DeBruler.
Fernandez is a 1992 graduate of the IU School of Law. He also graduated from the School of Public and Environmental Affairs with a Master's in Public Affairs in 1989.
Mayor Fernandez is visiting the law school at the invitation of the Law/SPEA
Student Organization, a student group formed to advocate on behalf of students pursuing degrees at the Law School and SPEA. All are welcome to attend. Pizza will be served.
BONE MARROW DRIVE WEDNESDAY FOR MARK WALKER
The Black Law Students Association (BLSA) will be having a Bone Marrow
Donor Drive this Wednesday, Sept. 13th, in the student lounge on the ground floor of the law school from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. The drive is to possibly find a marrow match for IU Law School Alum
Mark Walker. Five minutes of your time might save a life. Information concerning the drive has been placed in your mailboxes. Please come support this worthy cause as an individual or organization. We look forward to seeing you there. The testing fee has been reduced to $40 from $150.
NEWS FROM STUDENT ORGANIZATIONS
PROTECTIVE ORDER PROJECT NEW VOLUNTEER TRAINING
The Protective Order Project New Volunteer Training will be held this Saturday, Sept. 9 from 9:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in Room 121 at the Law School. After a welcome from Dean Lauren Robel, topics covered will include an introduction to domestic violence Issues, the statutory requirements and remedies, interviewing techniques, and petition drafting. The POP will provide refreshments.
This is not your only chance!!! The POP initial training session will be presented again, due to short notice and high demand, but this Saturday's presentation is highly recommended. The alternate date will be announced as soon as scheduled.
OUTREACH FOR LEGAL LITERACY
The Outreach for Legal Literacy Recruitment Meeting will be held Monday, Sept. 11 at 12:15 p.m. in Room 120. Outreach is recruiting law students to teach law to fifth-grade students in Bloomington Elementary Schools. The program is open to all law students, including 1L's. The time commitment is about 1-1/2 hours each week for six weeks each semester. The fall semester curriculum does not require a wealth of law experience, but rather concepts from high school or undergraduate government classes, such as voting rights and separation of powers. The spring semester curriculum culminates in a mock trial. OUTLAW INFORMATION AND ORGANIZATIONAL MEETING

people? Please come join OUTLAW for our first meeting of the year Monday, Sept. 11 at 12:15 p.m. in Room 214. Pizza and soda will be served.
OWLS MEETING TUESDAY
Older & Wiser Law Students (OWLS) is a new student organization to offer support and networking opportunities to the older law student. If you returned to school or just identify yourself as "older", we are the group for you!! Join us at the information meeting on Tuesday, Sept. 12, at 12:20 p.m. in Room 120.
Activities already in the works include presentations on juggling real-life and associate-life; how to use your previous work experience in your legal job search; a support meeting for married students and their spouses; a support meeting for students with children; and, of course, social activities for all OWLS. POP ETHICS TRAINING TUESDAY
Attention ALL POP VOLUNTEERS! The POP Conflicts and Confidentiality seminar is scheduled for Tuesday, Sept. 12, in Room 121 at 7:00 p.m. Professor Aviva Orenstein will address issues that especially concern POP volunteers. This session is now a requirement of the POP training and will be recorded for viewing for those with time conflicts.
This session is required for new POP volunteers and highly recommended for experienced POP volunteers. Really, really highly recommended.
INTERNATIONAL LAW SOCIETY
The International Law Society (ILS) will hold an informational meeting for all interested students on Wednesday, Sept. 13 in Room 122 at 12:10 p.m. It will be a basic introduction to ILS, the executive board for the 2000-2001 year, upcoming events, membership, and international faculty. Pizza and soda will be provided.
WOMEN'S LAW CAUCUS!!
The Women's Law Caucus will be holding their first general meeting of the year Wed, Sept. 13 at 12:15 p.m. All are welcome to attend! The Women's Law Caucus is a great way for men and women to get involved in discussing women's issues and promoting women's interests in the law. We will hold nominations for all of the officer positions and we will hold our elections the following Wednesday, Sept. 20. Food will be served at the meeting. SAVE YOPLAIT YOGURT TOPS
BLSA and the Intellect are holding a Yoplait Yogurt top drive in order to
support Breast Cancer research. If you, your friends, or your family eat Yoplait Yogurt, please keep the tops. We will have a drop box outside of the BLSA office on the ground level of the law school (across from the SLA Bookstore). Please aid us in our efforts to support Breast Cancer by bringing in your Yoplait Yogurt lids and dropping them in the collection box. Thanks.

Professor Craig Bradley will be in Germany October 1-4 participating in an international criminal law symposium sponsored by the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation. His paper will be on the death penalty in the United States.

Rachel Kearney and a panel of students will offer insights and answers regarding job interviewing. The first workshops will be Monday, Sept. 11 in Room 121 at Noon. The session will be repeated on Thursday, Sept. 14 in Room 122 at Noon.

Geoffrey Ivnick, the Lexis representative, will be available every Wednesday from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. in the library to help students hone their internet job research skills.

FORUM ON ALCOHOLISM AND OTHER IMPAIRMENTS
Monday, Sept. 11 at 7:30 p.m. to 9:00 p.m., Professor Orenstein's Legal Profession class will have a forum on alcoholism and other impairments presented by Indiana's Judges and Lawyers Assistance Program. The class will fulfill the addictions part of the Ohio ethics requirement, which students must complete before they sit for the Ohio bar. If you are interested in attending please contact Professor Orenstein by e-mail (aorenste).

To schedule classrooms in the law building, send email to bl-law-events (for Outlook users) or bl-events-law@ exchange.indiana.edu (for non-Outlook users). Please include date and time of event, length of time room will be needed, classroom requested and number of people attending event. Requests should be sent at least one week prior to event and include name of person requesting, organization planning the event and an email address. Confirmations will be sent by reply email.

Please include the name of your group and the e-mail address of the contact person, a description of what you want to do, and the date, location, starting time and duration of the event.
