PROF. GREENEBAUM RECEIVES DISTINGUISHED SERVICE AWARDS

Professor Edwin Greenebaum was honored for his service to the University this week at a ceremony where he was awarded the Distinguished Service Award. Earlier this year, Professor Greenebaum was awarded the W. George Pinnell Award for Outstanding Service. Professor Greenebaum was honored for his service on the Bloomington Faculty Council and the University Faculty Council. He served as BFC president pro tem and UFC co-secretary from 1995-1997, and since the 1980's, he has repeatedly served on the BFC and UFC Agenda Committees.

LAW SCHOOL HONORS MILES C. GERBERDING

DISTINGUISHED SERVICE AWARD WILL BE PRESENTED ON THURSDAY
IU School of Law Bloomington will recognize Miles C. Gerberding, a 1956 graduate, with the Distinguished Service Award on Thursday, April 27, 2000, at reception in Fort Wayne.

Gerberding received both his undergraduate and law degrees from Indiana University. During law school, he was on the Indiana Law Journal Student Editorial Staff. After graduating from law school, Gerberding went to work for Nieter & Smith in Fort Wayne. He was a partner from 1986 to 1997 at Barnes & Thornburg and currently is of Counsel. He is also a sole practitioner in Frankfort, Michigan.

Currently, Gerberding serves as the president of the Benzie County Bar Association, and as the director of the United Way of Allen County. Gerberding has served as chair of the Law School Board of Visitors. Other positions he has held include past president of the Indiana State Bar Association and served as a state delegate from the Indiana to American Bar Association. He is a fellow of The American College Trusts and Estates Counsel and The American College of Tax Counsel.

Gerberding was listed in The Best Lawyers in America from 1986-1998 in the Corporate, Tax and Trusts and Estates categories.

This award was created by members of the Board of Directors of the Law Alumni Association in 1996 as a way of recognizing and rewarding the School's graduates who provide outstanding and distinctive service to their communities and to the law profession.

ACADEMY OF LAW ALUMNI FELLOWS PROFILE

Who are those people whose photographs are on the first-floor wall? In this series of profiles, we introduce you to the members of the Academy of the Law Alumni Fellows. The Fellows are the recipients of the highest honor the Law School bestows on its alums. We hope that each profile will help you reflect on the successes of our alumni as well as some possibilities that are ahead for you.

RUSSELL HART
A leader in Indiana's legal community, Russell Holiday Hart, a trial lawyer, always offered a clear message to his colleagues about their responsibilities. "Lawyers have an obligation, not only to their clients and to the courts, but to civic organizations as well," Hart once stated at a symposium held at the law school. "Lawyers are well suited for pro bono work for the community and for the poor," he told his audience, thus summarizing his philosophy and his own career.

A native of Chicago, Illinois, Hart received his A.B. from DePauw University in 1950 and graduated from the School of Law Bloomington with distinction in 1956. As a law student, he was a member of the Indiana Law Journal and was elected to the Order of the Coif.

Hart joined the Stuart, Devol, Branigin & Ricks Law Firm now Stuart & Branigin in 1956. Founded in Lafayette in 1878, Stuart & Branigin is one the oldest firms in Indiana. (The Late Roger D. Branigin, former governor of Indiana, was a partner in the firm.) "I did almost all kinds of legal work expected of a young lawyer in a county seat city," Hart recalled. Eventually, he headed up the firm's litigation practice, defending an increasing number of asbestos-related claims filed against railroad companies. Over the years, as the nature of rail transportation evolved, Hart developed an expertise in representing railroad companies and in providing other types of civil, environmental, and insurance litigation.

Hart was always active in organizations that serve members of the legal profession. He was vice president, president-elect, and then president of the Indiana State Bar Association in the late 1980s when the association set up new standards for the continuing education of practicing lawyers, revised its code of legal ethics, established guidelines on professionalism, and formed a commission on women in the law. He chaired "Task Force Hart," which recommended guidelines to establish the financial stability of the Indiana Bar Foundation.

He also served as president of the Indiana Defense Lawyers Association, the Tippecanoe County Bar Association, and the National Association of Railroad Trial Counsel. Hart is a fellow of the Indiana Bar Foundation, the American Bar Foundation, the American College of Trial lawyers, the International Academy of Trial Lawyers, and the International Society of Barristers. In recognition of his accomplishments, he was named a Sagamore of the Wabash.

Throughout all of his successful endeavors, Hart remained true to his convictions. "A person should not go into the practice for the sole purpose of making money," he said. His career, spanning more than 40 years, exemplifies a life dedicated to service, the law, the courts, and his clients.

Russell Hart joined the Academy of Law Alumni Fellows in 1997.

TENTATIVE GRADUATES
If you are taking an out of state bar and need the written certification of your degree from the dean, please submit these forms to our office ASAP. Graduation data forms were placed in several tentative graduate mailboxes, if form is needed for data for the Class of 2000.

SUMMER DROP/ADD
Students may continue to adjust their summer schedules in the Recorder's Office up until the first day the course is scheduled to begin. Touchtone telephone access charge for registration is $19.00 and to adjust your schedule is $6.00 per call.

EXAM NUMBERS
Exam numbers for the spring semester are available in the Recorder's Office. Exam schedules have been placed in your mailboxes and are posted on the exam rooms and bulletin boards. The typing room is 216.

GRADES AVAILABLE ON INSITE
All final grades will be accessed only on INSITE. Students will no longer need to submit envelopes for the mailing of final grades, nor will grades be given out over the telephone, faxed or e-mailed to the student.

When a course's grade distribution is posted on the grade board, the grades for that course will be available for viewing on INSITE. For students that will not be on campus, you will need to check INSITE periodically to see if the grades are posted. Please note that the grade distribution on INSITE may be incorrect, because the Law School does not include non-JD students in official course grade distributions.

Students must know their PIN number to use INSITE. If you do not know your PIN number, you should contact the Registrar's Office, Franklin Hall, Room 100. The address for INSITE is http://insite. indiana.edu.

Grades from the faculty for the spring semester are due on Monday, June 5. The grade board will also indicate if a faculty member has been granted an extension for cause in submitting grades.

PMBR, a review course concentrating on the Multistate portion of the bar exam (MBE), may hold a 3-day course in Bloomington if there is enough student interest. The course would take place after BarBri.

To schedule classrooms in the law building, send email to bl-law-events (for Outlook users) or bl-events-law@ exchange.indiana.edu (for non-Outlook users). Please include date and time of event, length of time room will be needed, classroom requested and number of people attending event. Requests should be sent at least one week prior to event and include name of person requesting, organization planning the event and an email address. Confirmations will be sent by reply email.

Requests for AV services may be sent to Beth at av@exchange.indiana.edu. Please include the name of your group and the e-mail address of the contact person, a description of what you want to do, and the date, location, starting time and duration of the event. Requests must be made at least 48 hours in advance and will be confirmed by email.
