EVENTS & LECTURES

PATHWAYS AND PITFALLS TO SUCCESS
The Alumni Connection Session featuring Mr. Rapheal Prevot, Jr., NFL Management Council, New York ('84) and Mr. Hancy Jones III ('75), First Assistant U.S. Attorney Western District of Kentucky will be Friday, Nov. 12, at Noon in the Moot Court Room. Mark your calendars, bring your lunch and plan to be there.

The Black Law Students Association will sponsor several Alumni Connection Sessions over the course of the academic year to enhance opportunities to "connect" with prestigious Alums in a comfortable setting.

It is informative, valuable networking and cost-free. After a brief panel discussion and questions, the Alums will be available to interact with the audience. WE look forward to your presence.

Note: For anyone desiring to ask questions of the panel please submit them to knewhous@indiana.edu no later than Nov. 10. There will be some limited questions from the floor, if time permits, but advance questions will assist our efforts to be efficient. Thank you.

ACADEMY OF LAW ALUMNI FELLOWS PROFILE

Who are those people whose photographs are on the first-floor wall? In this series of profiles, we introduce you to the members of the Academy of the Law Alumni Fellows. The Fellows are the recipients of the highest honor the Law School bestows on its alums. We hope that each profile will help you reflect on the successes of our alumni as well as some possibilities that are ahead for you.

CARL M. GRAY
An acknowledged master as a trial lawyer, he gained his spurs before he won his law degree. Service in World War I interrupted his training, but not his prowess as he successfully combined careers of banker and attorney upon his return from military service.

The American College of Trial Lawyers, the American and Indiana Bar Foundations, and the College of Probate Counsel have named him a Fellow and key professional organizations have had the benefit of his participation. A former State Senator, he brought invaluable political experience to his service on the Indiana University Foundation Board.

Important statutory contributions resulted from his membership on the Judicial Study Commission and the Civil Code Study Commission of the State. His spirit and generosity have furthered the work of his church and of local youth organizations, but in no greater measure than the support he has given the Cream and Crimson teams of his alma mater.

Indiana University and the Indiana State Bar Association have honored him for distinguished service, with the Bat Association additionally declaring a Carl M. Gray Day.

NEWS FROM THE FACULTY

Professor David Fidler was a panelist at a Workshop on International Aspects of Emerging Infections, sponsored by the Forum on Emerging Infections of the U.S. Institute of Medicine and held in Washington, D.C., Oct. 28-29.

Professor Kellye Testy participated in the Teaching Corporate Law Conference at the University of Geogia, Oct. 15-16. Her presentation, entitled "Adding Value(s) to Corporate Law: An Agenda for Reform," discussed the salutary influences that feminist legal theory and critical race theory can have on corporate law doctrine and policy. The presentation addressed the importance of raising issues of race, gender, and class in the basic corporations course and offered specific recommendations on the methodology of doing so as well as highlighting particular substantive areas where it is appropriate to do so. An article based on her presentation will appear in the symposium issue of the Georgia Law Review.

Professor Testy also presented a paper entitled "Step Aerobics: The Law and Politics of the Lesbian 'Step' Parent" at the National Lesbian and Gay Law Association's (NLGLA) Lavender Law Conference, which was held in Seattle, Oct. 22-24. The paper critiques recent legal reforms that facilitate family formation by lesbians and gay men who wish to become parents together for failing to encompass the lesbian or gay "step" parent context.

PILF MEETING - VOTE!
This Tuesday, Nov. 9 will be the final PILF meeting for this semester (Room 122 at Noon). We will vote on new officers.

We are taking nominations for ALL OFFICES between now and Nov. 9 and will ask for any last nominations at the meetings. Please e-mail all

nominations (and yes, you may nominate yourself!) to Heather at herclark@indiana.edu. All nominations will remain anonymous.

We really want to encourage people to run for office - it's a great way to get involved in school, have a say in certain administrative matters,

help PILF, and also get one on one contact with the faculty and Dean.

12 ANGRY JURORS
The Law Drama society will be performing the first Indiana University School of Law production on March 31 and April 1, 2000. Auditions will be held in the Moot Court Room on Nov. 8 & 9 at 7:00 p.m. No experience is necessary. All law students and faculty are welcome and encouraged to audition. Non-gender specific roles available. Please direct questions to David Storey, ddstorey@indiana.edu.

INFORMATION SESSION ON JOINT DEGREE PROGRAMS
Jim Holmen, Director of Admissions for the Kelley School of Business, will lead an information session for law students interested in the JD-MBA or JD-MPA joint degree program.

Current joint-degree students will also be available to answer questions. This session will take place at 5:00 p.m. on Thursday, Nov.11, in the faculty lounge on the third floor. Please direct any questions about this meeting to Professor Buxbaum, Room 245.

Requests for AV services may be sent to Beth at av@exchange. indiana.edu. Please include the name of your group and the e-mail address of the contact person, a description of what you want to do, and the date, location, starting time and duration of the event. Requests must be made at least 48 hours in advance and will be confirmed by email.

RESEARCH ASSISTANT NEEDED
Professor Steve Johnson would like a research assistant for next semester. Any students who are interested in researching tax law should apply directly to Steve Johnson.
