THE HONORABLE ALEX KOZINSKI OF THE 9TH CIRCUIT COURT OF APPEALS TO SPEAK

LAW AND SOCIETY PROGRAM AND THE POYNTER CENTER
SYMPOSIUM ON RELIGIOUS LIBERTY AT THE DAWN OF A NEW MILLENNIUM

Friday, April 9 - Saturday, April 10, 1999 there will be a symposium entitled "Religious Liberty at the Dawn of a New Millennium." America's great experiment in religious liberty is in a state of flux, if not a state of turmoil. Marking the beginning of the new millennium, this interdisciplinary symposium will address a variety of issues relating to the history of religious liberty in the United States, its contemporary condition, and how our understanding of religious liberty might evolve in the future.

Sponsored by the Law and Society Program of the School of Law and by Indiana University's Poynter Center for the Study of Ethics and American Institutions, the symposium will take place in the Moot Court Room on the afternoon of Friday, April 9, and on the morning of Saturday, April 10.

PROFESSOR FREDA ADLER FROM CRIMINAL JUSTICE TO SPEAK

On Monday, April 12, from 5 p.m.-7 p.m. in the Moot Court Room, Professor Freda Adler of the Criminal Justice Department at Rutgers is speaking on Challenge for the Third Millennium: Globalized Crime. She is a guest of the Criminal Justice Department.

SCHOLARSHIP/FELLOWSHIP APPLICATIONS AVAILABLE IN ROOM 024

Applications are now available to apply for a few law school scholarship and fellowship awards that are not continuation academic merit awards.

These new awards will be based on a combination of factors: financial need, academic performance in the law school, and demonstrated leadership in or contributions to the law school community. Also, there are a few other scholarships for which students may apply, such as an Indianapolis Bar Foundation, Glenn Peters, and the Class of 1997 and 1998 scholarships. Watch the glass board on the first floor for specific instructions regarding applying for these and possible other opportunities.

SPECIAL SUMMER EXTERNSHIP OPPORTUNITY

The Clinical Externship in the United Nations Office in Brussels, Belgium, in the Refugee Division has re-opened. French Fluency is necessary. Four credits, loans, and scholarship assistance are available. See Dean Fromm immediately if interested.

INTERNATIONAL LAW ASSOCIATION

Notice! Change of date. On Tuesday, March 30, at 6:30 p.m. Swadesh Kalsi of Krieg DeVault in Indianapolis will be speaking on behalf of the International Law Association on "International Trade: Technology Transfers." ILA especially wants to invite the Business & Law Society and the Sports & Entertainment Law Society, though all are welcome! Pizza & pop provided. Room 214. (This event had originally been scheduled for Monday, March 29.)

ILA CHANGES ITS NAME

The International Law Association would like to announce that it will be changing its name to the International Law Society on April 1, 1999. Our new e-mail address should be ils@indiana.edu.

GRANT OPPORTUNITIES

PILF urges all students interested in funding for their projects to read the March 1 announcements on the NAPIL website (www.napil.org) for a listing of matching grant opportunities. Please note that many of the deadlines for application fall in the near term. Any student interested in pursuing one of these opportunities may see Professor Hughes for assistance, and should plan to have the RUGS staff also review their proposal.

WORK-A-DAY FUND DRIVE

"Help make Legal Services Available to Those in Need. Pledge a Day's Pay to help fund PILF's Summer Fellowship Drive.

SUMMER FELLOWSHIP DRIVE

Beginning March 29 through April 16th, the Public Interest Law Foundation will be holding its annual Summer Fellowship Drive. This fundraiser requests donations from law students, faculty, and law school staff to help support the public interest work of first- and second- year law students during the summer. All donations are matched by the Law School.

This is an excellent opportunity for our Law School to show its support of the Public Interest legal community, by making it possible for students to work at various non-profit organizations. Look for the PILF Drive table in the lobby from April 5-16th for more information.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

ATTENTION GRADUATING STUDENTS!

Believe it or not, it is time to begin the planning for the graduation display for the lobby. As we have done in the past, we want to do a collage of pictures, memorabilia and clippings regarding your three years of law school. We have already gathered a few things, but the real source of such items is all of you. We will return all the items to you following graduation.

Here is what we would like to include: pictures (students, events, weddings, children)depicting some aspect of your lives while law students; memorabilia including law school tee shirts, cups, posters from events that occurred during the three years, plaques, trophies or awards won can be included; clippings from any newspaper article about you, a fellow third year, or the law school during the three years. These can be local paper clippings or from your hometown. Be sure to include what newspaper the article is from and the date of the article; anything that has significance to you; will fit in the display case; and is in reasonably good taste can be included.

Please get these items to us as soon as possible. Each item must have a completed form attached that includes your name and the address where you want it returned. You can pick up these forms at the Reference Desk or in the Library Office. For pictures, include who or what it is, and what year it was taken. All comments or reminiscences must be signed, although we will not necessarily use your name in the display. We reserve the right to omit any item if needed.

Give items to the librarians in the reference office or to the assistant to the law library director. To insure that we have all the necessary information to return the items, do not just leave them in the office or at the Circulation Desk.
