EVENTS & LECTURES

IU LAW AND SPEA SPONSOR 1999 NATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF ENVIRONMENTAL LAW SOCIETIES' ANNUAL CONFERENCE
FEBRUARY 26-27, IU SCHOOL OF LAW AND THE INDIANA MEMORIAL UNION

Indiana University School of Law is hosting the 12th annual NAELS Conference Friday and Saturday, February 26-27. The conference was organized by students in Environmental Law Society, in collaboration with students in the Environmental Management Association, a graduate student organization at the School of Public and Environmental Affairs.

This national event promises to be a valuable and interdisciplinary experience. The conference panels, workshops, and speakers will draw from the field of environmental law, as well as policy, science, economics, civil rights, land use and agriculture, alternative dispute resolution, and global issues. Students from across the country are coming to the conference. Panelists and attendees will reflect local and national perspectives from private, government, academic, and non-profit settings. The conference provides a great opportunity to meet students from other schools as well as legal practitioners and other professionals.

Friday conference events will be held in the Indiana Memorial Union, and Saturday events in the School of Law. Attendance at the panels and workshops is free for all IU students. IU faculty and staff pay a $40 fee. Tickets are available for lunches and the banquet.

OCTOFINALS OF THE SHERMAN MINTON MOOT COURT COMPETITION

The Final Rounds of the 1998-1999 Sherman Minton Moot Court Competition begin Monday, February 22. Oral arguments will be held the week of February 22-26 at 6:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m. in the Moot Court Room (Room 123). An additional argument will be held on February 25 at 6:00 p.m. in the Trial Room (Room 219). Forty-four students will be participating in the competition. Quarterfinal Rounds are scheduled for March 1-2; Semifinal Rounds are scheduled for March 3; and the Final Championship Round will be held on March 4 at 7:30 p.m. Everyone is invited to watch student arguments. First-year students are strongly encouraged to attend.

NEWS FROM THE FACULTY

Professor David Fidler attended the World Health Organization's Workshop on the Development of a Global Strategy on Antimicrobial Resistance in Geneva, Switzerland, February 4-6.

Professor Fidler also presented a paper entitled "Public Health and International Law: The Impact of Infectious Diseases on the Formation of International Legal Regimes, 1800-2000" at the International Studies Association Annual Convention in Washington, D.C., on February 19.

ADVOCACY FORUM AT FLORA'S
MEET PUBLIC INTEREST PROFESSIONALS

Mark your calender! On Tuesday, March 2, from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m., join BLSA, ICLU, OutLaw, and PILF in welcoming representatives from various public interest advocacy groups to Flora's Restaurant for the Advocacy Forum. There will be wine, appetizers, and an opportunity to mix with professionals who currently or have previously worked in a public interest capacity. Everyone is welcome to attend.

FEMINIST VOICES JOIN IN!

Do you believe the Law School needs an organization with a feminist voice to address issues faced by women in law school and the legal profession? So do many other IU Law School students!

If you would like to be part of an active organization for women and pro-feminist men, it is important that you attend an organizational meeting Tuesday, February 23, at 12:10 p.m. in Room 124.

The meeting agenda will:

- Assess the level of support for such an organization

- Discuss the mission of such an organization

- Discuss the best structure for such an organization

FEDERALIST SOCIETY
"VOUCHING FOR EDUCATION?"

Please join the Federalist Society on Tuesday, February 23, at 12:15 p.m. in the Moot Court Room to watch Professor Alex Tanford go head to head with special guest Clint Bolick on the constitutionality of publicly funded vouchers for payment of religious or parochial school tuition.

Mr. Bolick is the vice president and director of litigation at the Institute for Justice, which he co-founded in 1991. The Institute was created to engage in constitutional litigation protecting individual liberty and challenging the regulatory welfare state. Mr. Bolick also teaches public interest litigation skills to lawyers, law students, and policy activists. He is a leader in the nationwide litigation effort to defend school choice programs and challenge regulatory barriers to entrepreneurship.

Mr. Bolick, who received his law degree from UC-Davis in 1982, is also an accomplished writer and political debater. We encourage each of you to come and help the Federalist Society welcome Mr. Bolick to IU Law.

INTERNATIONAL LAW ASSOCIATION
ED DELANEY TO SPEAK ON BOSNIA

The International Law Association (ILA) will sponsor a speaking event on Wednesday, February 24, at 6:30 p.m. in Room 120. Mr. Ed DeLaney of Barnes & Thornburg in Indianapolis will speak on his international law work in Bosnia. The title of his talk will be, "What the Treaty of Dayton Tells Us About the Rule of Law (As Opposed to the Rule of Force)." If you would like more background information about his work, please see the ILA board on the ground floor in the Law School. Everyone is invited. Pizza and pop provided.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

CONGRATULATIONS TO THE JESSUP INTERNATIONAL LAW MOOT COURT TEAM

The IU School of Law Jessup International Law Moot Court Team competed in the Central Regional Competition in Carbondale, Illinois, on February 4-5. They won third place in the Best Written Memorial competition, and Justin Hazlett won second place in the Best Oralist competition. The team members were Justin Hazlett, Jeff Robertson, Melissa Sweeney, Kostas Poulakidas, and Todd Spurgeon. Many congratulations to the team for its fine performance.

GLOBAL SYMPOSIUM A SUCCESS

The IU School of Law and the Indiana Journal of Global Legal Studies hosted its annual Global Symposium on February 11 and 12. The topic of the Symposium was "Globalization at the Margins: Perspectives on Globalization from Developing States." Speakers included scholars from the University of Wales, Oxford University, Yale Law School, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Tufts University, University of Oklahoma College of Law, University of Maryland School of Law, Indiana University, and IU School of Law. Professor David Fidler would like to thank the student editors of the Indiana Journal of Global Legal Studies for helping to organize the conference. Special thanks goes to Amy Thompson for all her help during the Symposium.

THANK YOU FROM PILF

PILF would like to extend its sincerest thanks to all who helped with the recent Kiss-A-Pig fund raiser. We would especially like to thank Professors Shreve and Hoffmann for being such good sports and agreeing to a tie after a fierce bidding war at the last minute. Thank you to everyone who donated to this campaign. This year we were able to raise over $1200. All of the money raised will go toward PILF's summer fellowship program which helps students working in public interest jobs. Applications for the fellowships are currently available on the Law School's web site and in Dean Fromm's office. Thanks again to everyone who donated and participated.

ADMISSIONS ASSISTANT NEEDED
JOB DESCRIPTION

In order to better assist incoming and returning students with their financial aid, housing, and spousal employment searches, the Admissions Office seeks to hire a first- or second-year law student to work as an admissions assistant. The person will assist primarily new students who have financial aid, housing, and employment search needs.

The person should be a self-starter who is empathetic with the transitional and financial aid problems associated with moving to Bloomington and starting law school. The person needs to be articulate, resourceful, creative, and a good advocate. Computer and typing skills are essential.

Hours are flexible. The position will be available on a part-time basis ($6.00/hr) starting in mid-March and continuing through the end of August. Approximately 5-10 hours per week will be required from mid-March until the end of the semester, and approximately 15-20 hours will be required during the summer until the beginning of fall classes.
