NEWS FROM THE FACULTY

Professor Craig Bradley appeared on Inside Edition on January 7 and on CBS News on January 14 in connection with the Chief Justice's role in the impeachment trial. However, the CBS appearance, which was in the second half of an expanded hour-long broadcast, was not shown on the Indianapolis station, which broadcast Wheel of Fortune instead. Vanna White in a popularity contest with the Chief Justice? A no brainer.

Professor Bradley also gave a presentation on his forthcoming book, Criminal Procedure: A Worldwide Study to the Federalist Society Faculty meeting, held in conjunction with the AALS meeting in New Orleans in January.

Professor Dau-Schmidt made two presentations at the annual meeting of the Association of American Law Schools in New Orleans, Louisiana, January 7 and 8. The first presentation was on "Alternative Economic Paradigms and the Analysis of Law," and the second was entitled "The Fruits of Our Labors: An Empirical Study of the Distribution of Income and Job Satisfaction across the Legal Profession."

TRANSCRIPTS AND GRADE PERCENTILE TABLES

Updated transcripts and grade percentile tables reflecting the fall semester grades will be available in our office on Feburary 12. Grade percentiles are not prepared for first-year students until the end of the spring semester. Students may pick up their transcripts in our office during normal working hours, 9:00 a.m. through 5:00 p.m.

ATTENTION 3Ls - BAR EXAMS
NOTES FROM DEAN FROMM

1. Remember to check carefully the application deadlines of states in which you plan to take the bar exam.

Again, we will have Indiana applications in the Recorder's Office within the next few weeks. The application deadline is April 1. See the sample application outside my office. You must contact the State Board of Law Examiners for other states to get materials. Catch me if you have any questions.

2. We now have in our office the new MPRE (Multi-State Professional Responsibility Exam) application packets for the 1999 dates.

3. Fingerprinting for bar application purposes can be done (for no charge) at the IUPD offices at 801 N. Jordan on any Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. That service will no longer be provided in the Law School.

4. Students taking the summer New York Bar exam - are you interested in a Bar review course here? If so, please tell Dale. If we have a sufficient signup, Bar/Bri may offer a course at the reduced rates.

5. Bar Study Loan applications are available in our office. Return completed applications to Dale--the loan check is sent directly to you.

ATTENTION 1Ls & 2Ls - LOANS FOR 1999-2000

Return your FAFSA renewal forms immediately or as soon as you can. If you have not received your renewal form, contact (319)337-5665.

You also may access and submit your renewal form (actually recommended) on the IU-Bloomington, Student Financial Assistance Office web page. Click on FAFSA. Remember to make a copy of what you send. At this time, no other form needs to be submitted for summer loans or next academic year loans.

If you have not decided on a definite practice area, you should not miss this day! Meet with over 40 attorneys from different practice areas and settings. Shake hands and talk one-on-one with these many attorneys --learn about their typical day at work, growing areas of law, and much more. This is THE largest gathering of attorneys for personal student interaction!

Don't miss out! Career Day will be held at the Indiana Bar Center, 230 East Ohio Street (near Market Center), from noon to 2:00 p.m. 1Ls are STRONGLY encouraged to attend. This is the best opportunity to begin defining career goals. Also, the information you gather here will help you in your interviews. A partial list of the attorneys attending this function thus far can be viewed in our office. If you need directions to the ISBA, stop in the CSO.

CONFERENCE PLANS

ELS will meet Tuesday, January 26, at 4:15 p.m. in Room 124. In addition to discussing upcoming ELS events-- the 1999-2000 ELS board elections, A Civil Action--the meeting also will include NAELS Conference details. The conference is fast-approaching (February 25-28), and we look forward to getting you involved as we finalize schedules, speakers, and logistics.

PILF will have a meeting Tuesday, January 26, at 12:15 in Room 121. The main purpose of this meeting is to provide FREE PIZZA to anyone who attends.

INTERNATIONAL OPPORTUNITY
SNYDER VISITING SCHOLAR

At the Research Centre for International Law
Cambridge University, England

Dr. Earl A. Snyder, an alumnus of Indiana University School of Law and Cambridge University, has generously provided support for a student (current 2L or 3L) from Indiana University to work at the Research Centre for International Law of Cambridge University during the late summer and early fall of 1999. Accordingly, current 3Ls have an advantage. A current 2L, if selected, might need to take a leave of absence for the fall semester.

Mr. Snyder will provide air fare, a housing and meal allowance, and stipend, worth over $4,000 altogether. The Centre contemplates that the Snyder Scholar will be in residence for about three months and will either participate in an on-going project of the Centre or be assigned a project of his or her own. Because the Centre expects the Snyder Scholar to work on an international law project, applicants must have had international law or equivalent courses. The Snyder Scholar should also be committed to further study of or practice in international law. Demonstrating a commitment can be done by listing courses taken in the international law area, research in international law topics, employment in the international arena, knowledge of languages, career goals, extracurricular activities and so on.

Applicants should provide the following:

1.a resume; and

2.a statement of commitment to international law and personal research agenda.

The preliminary selection committee will be comprised of faculty. Interviews may be required. The final selection will be made by Mr. Lauterpacht, Cambridge University professor and one of the premier lawyers on the international front, in late February. See Dean Fromm with questions.

EUROPEAN GLOBALIZATION PERSPECTIVES
MAY 17 - JUNE 4, 1999

The Institute for Development Strategies, School of Public and Environmental Affairs, in cooperation with the Law School, will conduct a three-week program in Europe during the summer of 1999 that will focus on European public policy and the impact of globalization on economies and institutions in Western Europe. The program will involve visits and seminars with relevant institutions in France, Belgium, Luxembourg, Germany, and Switzerland. Three credits (P/F) may be earned toward your law degree. Applications are available in Room 024. See Dean Fromm or Dale with questions. APPLICATION DEADLINE FOR THIS PROGRAM IS JANUARY 28.

WRITING CONTESTS AND PRIZES

If you are finishing a seminar research paper or a law journal note, check out the many writing contests for law students.

Many of these contests carry lucrative prize awards; some include publication. Over the past years, several of our students have successfully participated, earning as much as $4,000.00.
