EVENTS & LECTURES

INDIANA COURT OF APPEALS TO HEAR ARGUMENTS OCTOBER 9 AT NOON IN CLELAND V. BURKE

The Indiana Court of Appeals will hear oral arguments in Cleland v. Burke in the Moot Court Room on Friday, October 9, at noon. The case is an $8 million dispute involving, inevitably, death and taxes. Copies of the case synopsis will be available on the library check-out counter beginning today, and at the Moot Court Room before the arguments. Everyone is encouraged to attend; the attorneys arguing the case are from Valparaiso, Chicago, and Indianapolis.

AFL-CIO COUNSEL TO BE PRACTITIONER-IN-RESIDENCE

Attorney Marsha Bezron will be visiting the Law School the week of October 12, 1998, as part of the Law School's PractitionerInResidence Program. Ms. Bezron serves as Associate General Counsel for the AFL-CIO and is an Early Neutral Evaluator and mediator for the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California. Ms. Bezron was nominated to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit by President Clinton in January 1998 and is awaiting confirmation. Her legal career includes clerking for Justice William J. Brennan, Jr., of the United States Supreme Court and for Judge James R. Browning of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit. Ms. Bezron is involved in many legal organizations and is currently on the Board of Directors of the Legal Aid Society of San Francisco. She is also the recipient of the Faye Stender Award from the California Women Lawyers' Association for her contribution to establishing the legal rights of women. Ms. Bezron is a graduate of U.C. Berkeley School of Law.

During her visit, Ms. Bezron will be participating in several law classes, including Women in the Law, Employment Law, Legal Professions, and Trial Process. On Wednesday, October 14, 1998, she will have breakfast with the presidents of the Law School student organizations. Ms. Bezron will meet with members of PILF and the Women's Law Caucus the same day at 4:15 p.m. (both events will be held in the Faculty Lounge on the third floor). On Thursday, October 15, Ms. Bezron will discuss her legal career and the judicial confirmation process. The talk will be held at 12:00 p.m. in Room 122; all students are invited to attend. Questions regarding Ms. Bezron's visit may be directed to Professor Aviva Orenstein or Associate Dean Kelly Townes.

PANEL ON IMPEACHMENT PROCESS THURSDAY

What does the Constitution have to say about the impeachment process? What do we know about the law of impeachment and what is unsettled? Join Professors Baude, Bradley, and Conkle in the Moot Court Room on Thursday, October 8, at noon, for an informal brown bag on these issues.

AMERICAN CIVIL LIBERTIES UNION MEETING AND ELECTIONS

The ACLU-IU Chapter will meet this Thursday, October 8, at 5:30 p.m. in the Faculty Lounge. We will be electing our officers as well as discussing the Congressional elections. CHILDREN AND THE LAW DISCUSSION OF SCHOOL DISCIPLINE AND STUDENT RIGHTS

The Children and the Law Discussion Group will sponsor a discussion of school discipline and student rights entitled "Smokin' in the Boys' Room" on Wednesday, October 7, at 12:00 p.m. in Room 120.

The featured speakers are Dr. Gale Hill, principal of Tri-North Middle School, Prof. Seth Lahn of the Child Advocacy Clinic, Prof. Earl Singleton of the Community Legal Clinic, and high school counselor Janet Stake.

The topic is the conflict between students' rights and the need for order in the classroom. All are encouraged to attend, and a particular invitation is extended to first-year students who think they might be interested in children's legal issues.

ENVIRONMENTAL LAW SOCIETY GENERAL MEETING

The Environmental Law Society will have a general meeting on Wednesday, October 7, at 4:00 p.m. (Keep your eye out for signs regarding the room for the meeting.) PUBLIC INTEREST LAW FOUNDATION PRO BONO FAIR

PILF will host a Pro Bono Fair on Tuesday, October 6, from noon to 1:00 p.m. in the Lobby. The fair is designed to showcase volunteer opportunities in the community. Community organizations will be here to talk to you about what they do and how you can help. Volunteering is a great way to gain marketable experience. We hope to see you there!

MOOT COURT PARTICIPANTS: BRIEF NUMBERS AND BRIEF DEADLINE

Participants in the Moot Court Competition may pick up their brief numbers in the Moot Court Board Office (Room 011) on Monday, October 5 and Tuesday, October 6, between 12:10 and 1:00 p.m. Participants must include their brief numbers on the cover of their briefs. The rules of the Sherman Minton Moot Court Competition prohibit students identifying themselves in any other way, e.g. names, student indentification numbers, or social security numbers can not appear anywhere on the briefs. Remember, the brief deadline is 12:00 p.m. Friday, October 9.

PROTECTIVE ORDER PROJECT SPONSORS DRIVE FOR MY SISTER'S CLOSET

A group of women are organizing My Sister's Closet as a lending closet of clothing especially for the purpose of providing workforce attire for women pursuing employment in a job search program. The Closet, when it opens in a few weeks, will supply interview clothing and will continue to support women in the first weeks of employment until they become self-sufficient in providing their own work clothing. The organizers need donations of work attire--blazers, skirts, blouses, sweaters, tailored trousers, and footwear. They also need money donations to procure hosiery and to pay cleaning expenses and rent for the "store." At this point, anyone wishing to donate should contact the group at The Rise, the residential facility on South Washington operated by Middle Way House, or leave items with the P.O.P. in Room 010 during office hours from noon to 1:00 p.m. on weekdays. Or call 355-3745 for more information about volunteering and donating to the future of women in the community.
