EVENTS & LECTURES

INDIANA ATTORNEY GENERAL VISITS MONDAY

Indiana Attorney General Jeffrey Modisett will speak on Monday, September 28, at 4:00 p.m. in the Moot Court Room. Mr. Modisett will discuss the legal work of the Attorney General's Office, including the involvement of many IU law students who work there each summer. The Office of the Attorney General represents the state in both civil and criminal cases and has five main divisions. Their work ranges from environmental to civil rights, from criminal to real estate litigation, from tort litigation to consumer protection, from medicaid fraud to administrative and regulatory litigation. Come hear about the work of the attorneys in this premier government agency.

JUDGE KANNE TO SPEAK TUESDAY

The Federalist Society will sponsor a talk by The Honorable Michael S. Kanne, a judge on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Seventh Ciruit, on "The Role of a Judge in Adjudicating Cases Constitutionally" on Tuesday, September 29, at 12:15 p.m. in the Moot Court Room. Judge Kanne is a graduate of the Law School and currently serves on the Law School's Board of Visitors. Everyone is encouraged to attend!

PANEL ON IMPEACHMENT PROCESS-WEDNESDAY

What does the constitution have to say about the impeachment process? What do we know about the law of impeachment and what is unsettled? Join Professors Baude, Conkle, and Johnsen in the Moot Court Room on Thursday, October 1, at noon, for an informal brown bag on these issues.

PROFESSOR JOHNSON SHARES "THE GOOD AND THE BAD" IN ORAL ADVOCACY

The Moot Court Board is pleased to sponsor Professor Steve R. Johnson in a discussion on oral advocacy on Thursday, October 1, at 7:00 p.m. in Room 123 (Moot Court Room). Professor Johnson will show tapes from moot court competitions as examples of key oral advocacy skills and talents. He also will address mistakes that advocates have made and which should be avoided. This discussion should be both instructive and entertaining and is a "must see" for both competition participants and others who are interested in improving their advocacy skills.

Professor Johnson received his J.D. from New York University School of Law, where he served as the Senior Managing Editor of the law review and distinguished himself in moot court competition, winning awards for both written and oral advocacy. Following law school, he joined the New York office of Willkie Farr & Gallagher, where, for five years, he divided his time between tax planning and tax controversy work. Electing to move to government service, Professor Johnson worked for two years as a Special Assistant U.S. Attorney litigating federal tax cases. For eight years he was a Senior Attorney at the Internal Revenue Service Chief Counsel Office in Jacksonville, Florida.

Professor Johnson joined the IU Law faculty in 1994. His lively and literate humor affords students an intelligible and entertaining classroom experience. Professor Johnson is a strong supporter of the Moot Court Competition, in which past competitors have been challenged by his creative questioning when he has served as a judge for the oral arguments.

Be sure to take this opportunity to observe an experienced moot court judge's critique of oral arguments prior to the competition.

NEWS FROM THE FACULTY

Professor David Fidler's book, Empire & Community: Edmund Burke's Writings and Speeches on International Relations, has been accepted for publication in 1999 by Westview Press of Boulder, Colorado. Professor Fidler is editing this book with Dr. Jennifer M. Welsh.

Professor Fidler's article "The Future of the World Health Organization: What Role for International Law?" has been accepted for publication in the November 1998 issue of the Vanderbilt Journal of Transnational Law.

Professor Aviva Orenstein delivered two lectures on character evidence to Indiana Judges at the annual Indiana Judicial Conference in Merrillville, IN.

Thanks to all of you who have completed the recruiting questionnaire recently placed in your mail slots. We were able to add a number of you to our list of Tour Guides. We also will be sending admissions information to those students whose names you provided us. A number of helpful suggestions have been made, and we will try to address as many of these as possible. For those of you who have not completed the questionnaire, there is still time to do so. The drop box will be left until October 1. If you have misplaced the form, please stop by Room 230 to obtain another one. Thanks again for all your comments and information.

ATLA DEADLINE

Just a reminder: The deadline for registration for Trial Competition Tryouts is September 28. Please put your form in Sohini Gupta's (3L) mail slot. To be sure we received it, check for your name on the ATLA Board in the Lounge. We look forward to seeing you at the tryouts.

CHILDREN & THE LAW DISCUSSION GROUP - FALL EVENTS

Outreach for Legal Literacy teaches law to fifth graders throughout Bloomington. This coming year we plan to teach fifth-grade classes in University, Binford, Grandview, Templeton, St. Charles, and Highland Park elementary schools. Lesson plans and ideas are provided. Some of the schools are within walking distance. Teachers need to be available for an hour each week--sometime between 9:00 and 2:00, Monday-Friday. First-year students are welcome.

We will have a brief meeting on Monday, October 5, at 12:15 p.m. in Room 121 for those interested in teaching. New teachers are welcome and should contact Aviva Orenstein (avivaorenstein@law.indiana.edu) to receive teaching packets and to be assigned to classrooms. Returning teachers please contact Professor Orenstein soon to let her know of your plans and to receive additional materials. Anyone who wants to teach but cannot make the meeting, please contact Professor Orenstein by e-mail.

Halloween play: State v. Goldy Locks (designed to teach kids about the presumption of innocence). The actors are law students and professors. After the show, the actors will enter individual classrooms to conduct a "jury discussion" of whether Goldy Locks should be convicted.

Halloween party for children of the Law School, Thursday, October 29.

Monthly discussion groups. No preparation is necessary. This semester C&L is planning discussions on school discipline and expulsion and a joint program with POP on the effect of domestic violence on children.

INTERNATIONAL LAW ASSOCIATION

International Faculty Reception - On Wednesday evening, September 30, ILA will be holding a reception with the international law faculty. Prof. Fidler, Prof. Buxbaum, Prof. Delbruck, Prof. Craig, and Dean Aman have graciously agreed to participate. They will be available for informal chatting and to discuss their work and classes. The event will take place in the Faculty Lounge from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. (Members only.)

PHI DELTA PHI

Phi Delta Phi will be holding a meeting on Wednesday, September 30, in Room 120 at 12:00. We will be discussing an upcoming fundraiser, an upcoming community event, and the October 15 initiation before the Indiana Supreme Court. Refreshments will be served.

CALL FOR PAPERS

Asian Law Journal at University of California at Berkeley (Boalt Hall) invites you to submit your scholarly writing for publication in Volume 6, to be published May 1999. The Journal seeks to publish articles, case notes, student comments, recent development pieces, and book reviews which discuss the law and legal issues concerning and impacting Asians in America.

Requirements:
Anyone may submit an article. It should have strong support, with complete and accurate citations, and should be over 50 double-spaced typewritten pages. Case notes should be approximately 20 to 40 double-spaced typewritten pages. Student comments should be over 40 double-spaced typewritten pages. Recent developments pieces are short expositions on current judicial decisions, administrative rulings and regulations, legislation, and politics which have a legal impact on Asian Americans. Such pieces should be 8 to 12 pages in length.

Deadline:
November 1, 1998, for publication in Volume 6. Pieces received after this deadline will be considered for publication in the next issue.
