Winning Students
NITA TRIAL TEAM WINS
The law school's trial competition team of Alan Schuchman and David Durm won the Midwest regional competition on Saturday in Chicago, outperforming 21 other teams. In March they will compete in the national finals held in San Antonio. Vince Taylor and Jay Meisenhelder, former IU team members, who are now practicing attorneys, coached the team to victory. Ed Hartzog, Jason Wandel, Rob Roberts and Laura Boeckman, as part of IU's contingent, also contributed greatly to the winning team's success.
Students interested in participating and alumni interested in supporting the team should talk to team members.
THE WRITING ON THE WALL
Derek Johnson, a first year student, submitted the winning entry for the "Name the Wall" contest. A group of faculty considered the 20 names suggested for the law materials section of IU Bookstore in the Carmichael Center. They then forwarded three names to the bookstore. The two other finalists were "Mrs. Palsgraf's Pantry" and "Strict Scrutiny," both submitted by Mweni Ekpo, 3L . The bookstore, which made the final selection, will award Mr. Johnson $100 for his winning entry, "Lex Scripta," (the written word.)
News from Faculty
Dean Aman is co-teaching a course in Comparative Constitutional Law with Professor Elisabeth Zoller at the Institut Francais de Droit Compare. Professor Zoller will be teaching Comparative Constitutional Law at our law school this summer.
Professor Aviva Orenstein delivered a speech entitled "Get Off the Blue Bus: Incorporating a Feminist Analysis into Evidence Policy Where You'd Least Expect It." The talk advocated an exception to the admissions rule for apologies. She delivered the speech at the American Association of Law School Conference in San Francisco in January.
Professor Gene Shreve has been elected Chair of the Conflict of Laws Section of the Association of American Law Schools.
AND ON THE LIGHTER SIDE...
Fred Cate's book, "The Internet and the First Amendment: Schools and Sexually Explicit Expression," was published last week. The book covers in detail the liability that public universities and their students can face by forcing unsuspecting pigs to fraternize with law faculty.
News from Student Affairs
NO SMOKING / SMOKING POLICY CHANGE
A few years ago Indiana University enacted a policy prohibiting smoking in university buildings. Since that time people have had to go outside to smoke. Although this solved many problems within university buildings, it has created some additional problems at the law school.
Smoking outside the law school student lounge entrance is one of the problem areas. There is a large intake vent in the covered area outside the student lounge. When people smoke in this area, the smoke is drawn into the building and creates a significant problem in parts of the law library and law school. Accordingly, smoking is prohibited in the covered area outside the student lounge. This has not solved the problem satisfactorily because the intake fans still draw smoke from outside the covered area. University officials indicate that moving or adjusting the intake fan and vent is not a viable solution.
The second problem area is in front of the law school building. Many complaints have been received by SLA (Student Law Association) members and others about people smoking in this area. The strong odor and smoke from cigarettes and cigars are very unpleasant for those entering and leaving the building. Also, cigarette butts that are left all over the ground create an unsightly appearance.
In response to these problems, smoking will now be limited to the patio area on the southeast side of the law school, accessed by the door across from the main entrance to the library and adjacent to the central stairwell door. No smoking will be allowed at the main entrance to the law school or anywhere in the vicinity of the student lounge north entrance (including the area immediately outside of the covered portion of the entrance). SUMMER STUDY ABROAD PROGRAMS
A few spaces remain for the SPEA-sponsored summer programs in Paris and Brussells (May 18-29) and in Bonn, Frankfort, and Geneva (May 31-June 12). Each program is worth two credits. Applications are available in Room 024.
PRESIDENTS' COUNCIL MEETING
There will be a brief meeting of all presidents and chairs (or a designee) of law school organizations on Wednesday, February 4, at noon, in Room 120.
SCHOLARSHIP AND FELLOWSHIP APPLICATIONS FOR 1998-99
Application forms for next year will be available in Room 024 starting on February 5. The deadline for applying will be in early April.
News from the Recorder
Indiana State Bar applications for the July exam are available in the Recorder's Office. The mailing deadline for the application is April 1, 1998.
All tentative May and August 1998 graduates need to complete a graduation data form available in the Recorder's Office. This form includes data for our graduation list and bar certification data. Please complete this form no later than February 13.
Commercial Transactions examination numbers are available.

LARGE FIRMS GO BACK INTO THE MARKET
At a recent national meeting, Associate Dean Kelly Townes received a report that a number of large law firms are finding that their yield on offers extended this fall is down and that they need more second year and third year students. This is true in many markets throughout the U.S. and includes many popular employers. However, many of these same firms do not want everyone to know that they missed their hiring mark. Hence, they are in a "quiet" search. If you hold a GPA that was just outside many of the employers' hiring criteria this fall, and you are still looking, Associate Dean Townes strongly advises sending out resumes ASAP to notify firms of your continued interest. You will not see ads for these positions, nor is there any easy way to know who is still looking. It will be hit or miss, but a very worthwhile endeavor.
ISBA/YOUNG LAWYER SECTION CAREER DAY
Students who have not decided on a definite practice area should attend the ISBA/Young Lawyer Section Career Day. Career Day happens on Saturday, February 7 from noon until 2:00 p.m. at the Indiana Bar Center in Indianapolis.
Career Day provides students with the opportunity to talk one-on-one with more than 40 attorneys from different practice areas and settings. Lawyers share information about their typical day at work, growing areas of law, and much more.
This is the largest gathering for attorney-student interaction. Because Career Day provides one of the best opportunities for defining career goals and gathering useful information for interviews, CSO especially encourages 1Ls to attend.
Students who need directions to the Indiana Bar Center should stop by CSO.

CLS BIBLE STUDY
The Christian Legal Society will be holding a Bible Study every Tuesday at 8:15 p.m. in Room 406A. All faculty, staff and students are welcome.
OUTLAW
Outlaw will meet this Wednesday, February 4 at 5:05 p.m. in Room 124. On the agenda this week is continuing work on the upcoming newsletter as well as planning for a panel discussion. Persons supportive of gay, lesbian, or bisexual rights are encouraged to attend.

DATES FOR LAW LIBRARY QUIZ BOWL CHANGED
The dates for the Law Library Interrogatories have been changed to March 9-10, 1998. The date was changed to avoid the many conflicts that were arising with other events in the law school (not to mention Mardi Gras.) So mark your calendar and get your teams together. Remember - law students, faculty and staff (except for library staff) are eligible to participate. Teams should consist of four members plus an alternate. The entry fee is $50 (that's only $10 a person) - or maybe you could get a rich benefactor to sponsor your team. All proceeds will be donated to the student activities fund. The deadline for signing up has been changed to Monday, March 2, but the earlier you sign up, the easier it is for us to prepare the questions.
