Welcome to Our Visiting Professors

Kelly Townes, Associate Dean
This semester IU School of Law welcomes two visiting professors: John Applegate and Satvinder Juss.

Professor Applegate comes to IU from the University of Cincinnati College of Law. Prior to joining the faculty at Cincinnati, Professor Applegate was an associate with Covington & Burling in Washington, D.C. and served as a staff attorney with the Neighborhood Legal Services Program in D.C. Just after law school he clerked for the Honorable Edward S. Smith on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit. Professor Applegate will be teaching International Environmental Law and Toxic & Hazardous Waste this semester. His office is located in Room 247.

Prior to coming to IU, Satvinder Juss served as a Visiting Professor at the University of Puerto Rico, as a Foreign Judicial Fellow at the Federal Judicial Centre in Washington, D.C., and as a Visiting Human Rights Fellow at the Harvard Law School. He is visiting the United States from England as a Harkness Fellow, the British counterpart to our Rhodes Scholar. He is a Barrister-at-Law with Gray's Inn and has taught at several universities throughout England and Wales. This semester Professor Juss will be teaching Law & Medicine and a seminar in Law & Religion. His office is located in Room 316.

News from the Faculty

Professor Gene Shreve served as moderator for the Civil Procedure Section program entitled "A Reappraisal of the Supplemental Jurisdiction Statute: Title 28 U.S.C. 1367." The program was part of the Association of American Law Schools meeting in San Francisco on January 9.

Marshall Leaffer served as program chair for the Intellectual Property Law Section for the 1998 annual meeting in San Francisco. This year's program, "Computer and Cyberspace Law: An International Perspective," was a joint production of the Intellectual Property Law and Computer Law Sections.

Juliet Smith's publication, "Recent Books: Criminal Law and Criminology" appears in the Journal of Criminal Law and Criminology, Spring 1997, page 1066.

1998-99 FOREIGN LANGUAGE AND AREA STUDIES (FLAS) FELLOWSHIPS:

The Inner Asian and Uralic National Resource Center (IAUNRC) at Indiana University offers Foreign Language and Area Studies (FLAS) Fellowships for modern language and area studies under Title VI of the Higher Education Act. FLAS Fellowships cover the cost of academic fees and health insurance plus a $10,000 stipend for the academic year.

Awards can be made for the study of any of the following languages offered by the IAUNRC: Estonian, Mongolian, Turkish, Finnish, Persian/Tajik, Turkmen(*), Hungarian, Tibetan, Uzbek and Kazak(*).

Eligibility for all languages depends upon funding and Department of Education approval.

For languages marked with an asterisk, the Center presently anticipates funding only for summer 1999 FLAS awards.

To be eligible for an academic year FLAS award, an applicant must (a) hold a bachelor's degree or equivalent by the time study would begin; (b) be an American citizen or permanent resident, with career goals in teaching, public service, or in private or non-profit organizations; (c) be admitted to study by a graduate department at Indiana University; (d) undertake an approved, full-time program of language and area studies during the tenure of the award.

Applications are available from the Department of Central Eurasian Studies, Goodbody Hall 157, Indiana University, Bloomington, Indiana 47405 as well as from the IAUNRC at Goodbody Hall 324. You may also apply on-line at the IAUNRC web site: https://iaunrc.indiana.edu/.

The application deadline for 1998-99 academic year FLAS Fellowships is February 2, 1998.

"Globalization in Europe" Program: May 30 - June 12

The Globalization in Europe Program, conducted by Dr. Charles Bonser from SPEA, will be described at a meeting in Room 125 on Wednesday, January 21 at 12:15. The applications to participate in the program, which will involve 2 credits, will be available. The SPEA Paris Program, from May 18 to May 29 will also be discussed. All 1L and 2L interested students should attend or see Dean Fromm as soon as possible after the meeting. There are limited spaces available for these programs.

News from Career Services

1L MOCK INTERVIEW PROGRAM WITH LOCAL ATTORNEYS

During the week of January 26, CSO will provide students with an opportunity to practice interviewing skills with a local attorney. In most cases, attorneys will conduct the interviews at their place of business. (Students are advised to dress appropriately.) This will allow students to experience what a real interview might be like. Students should register by noon on January 21 for one of the sessions.

Each session is 30 minutes in length. This will allow for both the interview and a critique.

Sign-up is on a first-come, first-served basis in the Career Services Office. Students should provide a copy of their resume when they register. (If there are additional spaces on the day of the deadline, CSO will open the program to 2L and 3Ls.)

RESUME CRITIQUE SESSION

CSO will conduct an interactive workshop on effective resumes. The workshop will be held on Thursday, January 29 at noon in Room 214.

Session participants will break into small groups and act as a "hiring committee." Each "committee" will be given a set of resumes and will be asked to "fill" several positions. Following the group exercise, participants will discuss how resume content and format affect hiring decisions.

This workshop will provide an excellent opportunity for improving the message, format and content of one's resume.

Space for the workshop is limited; students should sign up outside of CSO.

ISBA/YOUNG LAWYER SECTION CAREER DAY

Students who have not decided on a definite practice area should attend the ISBA/Young Lawyer Section Career Day. Career Day happens on Saturday, February 7 from noon until 2:00 p.m. at the Indiana Bar Center in Indianapolis.

Career Day provides students with the opportunity to talk one-on-one with more than 40 attorneys from different practice areas and settings. Lawyers share information about their typical day at work, growing areas of law, and much more.

This is the largest gathering for attorney-student interaction. Because Career Day provides one of the best opportunities for defining career goals and gathering useful information for interviews, CSO especially encourages 1Ls to attend.

Students who need directions to the Indiana Bar Center should stop by CSO.

MIDWEST PUBLIC INTEREST CAREER CONFERENCE

Northwestern University School of Law will host the Midwest Public Interest Career Conference, where employers from the Midwest region will either interview with students one-on-one or participate in table-talk sessions. Interested students should stop by the CSO to review the employer information and pick-up registration packets. The deadline for registering is this Wednesday.

News from Student Organizations

OUTLAW

Outlaw, a law school group committed to supporting gay, lesbian, or bisexual rights, will meet this Wednesday, January 21 at 5 p.m. in Room 121. The Wednesday meeting will provide an opportunity to discuss publication of a newsletter, as well as plan for discussions and speakers.

PILF

PILF will meet on Thursday, January 22 at noon in Room 121. Everyone is welcome.

ELS HOLDS RECEPTION FOR INTERESTED STUDENTS

The Environmental Law Society (ELS) will sponsor a reception for all students interested in ELS, in local environmental organizations, and in the field of environmental law.

On Thursday, January 22 from 5:15-6:30 p.m. in the Faculty Lounge, ELS members will answer questions about ELS programs and activities. Law school and SPEA (School for Public and Environmental Affairs) professors will be present to answer questions about environmental law classes and the practice of environmental law. Light hors d'oeuvres and beverages will be served.

ELS GENERAL MEMBERS MEETING

The Environmental Law Society will hold a general meeting for all members and for all students interested in participating in ELS. On Tuesday, January 27 in Room 124 at noon, this follow-up to the ELS reception (January 22) provides a chance to meet students with similar organizational and research interests, and to participate in planning and carrying out ELS activities for the semester. These activities include research projects and fund-raising activities, and organizing a national environmental law conference.

ELS SPONSORS SUMMER INTERNSHIP/SCHOLARSHIP

The Environmental Law Society has opened its application process for its 1998 Summer Internship. This internship will provide a law student with the opportunity to work in the field of environmental law and actually get paid. The intern will solicit local and national environmental groups for research projects and complete several research projects on behalf of the Environmental Law Research Group, the research arm of ELS. The deadline for application is February 13 at 5:00 p.m. in the CSO. Applicants should submit a resume and cover letter detailing interests and relevant experience. See the Career Services Office for details, or email Kellye Bowers at kbowers.

OUTREACH FOR LEGAL LITERACY

Outreach for Legal Literacy will meet on Wednesday, January 21 at 12:10 in Room 214. Participants will receive classroom assignments and lesson plans. The fifth grade classrooms have provided available times, so please bring your schedules. As always, snacks will be provided. JUDICIAL CLERKSHIPS, 2L'S AND 3L'S

The chief judge of the Northern District of Illinois has notified Acting Dean Robel that the district's judges plan to use February 1 as their standard application date. Other courts around the country have sent similar messages. Students considering clerkships should note that there may still be sufficient time to prepare their applications. See the CSO's files on clerkships applications for information.

BECOME A VOLUNTEER INCOME TAX ADVISOR (VITA)

VITA volunteers learn and apply basic tax laws and interpret regulations. The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) provides the training which covers non-resident tax advising and Indiana State forms. Training dates are Friday and Saturday, January 23-24 on campus. VITA staff must take and pass a written examination for the basic tax service.

The VITA program is designed to assist taxpayers with the filing of income tax forms. The program is free to clients and is sponsored by the Office of International Services and the International Center. Tax advising will take place from February 2 - April 15, 1998.

LAW LIBRARY INTERROGATORIES

The first, possibly annual, Law Library Interrogatories will take place on Tuesday and Wednesday, February 17-18. This quiz bowl competition is open to all law students, faculty, and staff. Now is the time to form your team of trivia wizards! Teams should consist of four members plus an alternate. An entry of $50 is requested. All money gathered will be given to the Student Activities fund to assist with travel to conferences, student programs, and events.

CAMERON DAVIS TO SPEAK ON ENVIRONMENTAL ISSUES

The Environmental Law Society presents Cameron Davis, staff attorney for the National Wildlife Federation. All students are invited to participate in the ELS Brown Bag Lunch Series in welcoming this prominent and enthusiastic attorney who has worked on a variety of water quality issues, in particular, those regarding the Great Lakes Water Quality Initiative. Cameron Davis will speak in Room 120 at 12:00 p.m., Friday, January 30.

BALANCING CAREER AND FAMILY - HOW DO LEGAL PROFESSIONALS DO IT?

Women's Law Caucus invites the law school community to a student discussion about combining two daunting tasks: a legal career and parenthood. The discussion will focus on the implications of being both a lawyer and a parent and will address choice of work setting (i.e., governmental lawyer vs. big law firm lawyer) and other choices that can impact the reality of parenting. Professors, in particular, are encouraged to attend to share their experiences in this area. The discussion, which will be facilitated by Shelly McBride and Maggie Jones, will be held on Wednesday, January 21, at 4:30 p.m. in the Faculty Lounge. Refreshments will be served.
