INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY/ANTITRUST PRACTITIONER HERE
Our practitioner-in-residence program brings interesting alums to the School to participate in classes and meet with students. In addition to attending classes, alum and Practitioner-in-Residence Ed O'Connor will be available to discuss his practice and the current state of the market on Monday, Sept. 22 at 3:15 p.m. in Room 216. Mr. O'Connor is a partner practicing in the areas of patent, trademark, and antitrust litigation. His firm's offices are in Irvine, California.
BATMAN PRODUCER AT LAW SCHOOL
Law school alumnus and Hollywood Executive Producer Michael Uslan will visit the law school as a Practitioner-In-Residence from October 13 to October 15. Michael Uslan is best known for producing the Batman films. He has also produced many other movies for both the big screen and television. From 1976-1980 he was a motion picture production attorney for United Artists in charge of legal affairs for many pictures, including "Apocalypse Now," "Rocky III," "Raging Bull," and "The Black Stallion." In addition, he is an authority on comic book history and the first accredited college course and correspondence course on comic books at IU. He is also the writer of the internationally syndicated newspaper comic strip, "Terry and the Pirates," (1995-96).
During his visit, Mr. Uslan will participate in several law classes and will talk with interested students at an open session entitled, "An Alternative Career Outside the Law" at which he will discuss his career choices and how his law degree has helped in his career. The discussion will take place on Tuesday, Oct. 14 at 3:15 p.m. in Room 121.
FULBRIGHT SCHOLAR GULNARA ISKAKOVA ARRIVES
IU Law School will host a second Fulbright Research Scholar this year, Dr. Gulnara Iskakova. Dr. Iskakova is visiting here from Kyrgyzstan and will be researching the problems of improving electoral laws and the electoral system in that country. She will be visiting for the entire year and will be sharing office space with Dr. Marat Sarsembaev (Room 202). Dr. Sarsembaev is a Fulbright Research Scholar from Kazak State University in the Republic of Kazakstan. Dr. Sarsembaev is conducting research on the formation of private property law in the U.S. and other countries for a project on the problems of property law in domestic and international law. His nine month stay at the Law School concludes in mid-November.

Rob Fischman's 1997 Supplement to his Environmental Decisionmaking casebook has been released by Anderson Publishing Company.
Aviva Orenstein will deliver a talk entitled, No Bad Men!: A Feminist Analysis of Character Evidence in Rape Trials, at the "Truth and Its Rivals" Evidence Conference at Hastings Law School in San Francisco on Saturday September 27.
Lauren Robel will be attending the National Association of Women Judge's Annual Conference in Salt Lake City, Utah, at the end of the week. Dean Robel is a member of the NAWJ Judicial-Academic Network and wil lmoderate a discussion on "Stereotypic Remedies: The Question of Gender, Race, and Ethnic Neutrality."

GOLF OUTING RESULTS: CONKLE DENIED AGAIN
All 100 participants in the golf outing last week-end enjoyed terrific weather, incredible comradeship, and magical golf shots.
Congratulations go to the "dreamteam" composed of David Durm, Brian Balsbaugh, Gregg Stellis, and Kelly Eberspecher for their winning 10-under round, a 61. As for individual awards, the closest to the pin on a second shot award went to Sweet Swinging Steve (just call me Triple S) Thrasher. The closest to the pin on a par three award was collected by EIC (elated in the clubhouse) Michael Pratt. The man with the steady head and gentle touch, Jason McAuley, confiscated the loot for the longest putt. And, the mighty Quinn Kiley, reputed to actually be in the first-year class when not at driving contests around the country, drove one out of sight on the 13th Long Drive hole. He survived a rules appeal by Professor Dan Conkle, who asserted that his drive on the 15th hole was clearly the longest of the day (at least according to the speculation of his partners), and that the event organizers had marked the incorrect hole for the contest. Conkle, who seems to be making a habit of challenging the rules of this event each year, also claimed that even if the contest hole was changed by the organizers, they had failed to give adequate notice to the participants. Once again, his appeal was denied.
SENIORS
The IU Police Department will be coming to the student lounge once a month in order to provide a free and convenient fingerprinting service. Indiana and many state bars require, as part of the process of applying to take the bar exam, that students submit fingerprints.
The first available day for this service will be Wednesday, Sept. 24, followed by Oct. 22 and Nov. 19. This is an easy way to get one of the many bar application issues out of the way. Dates for graduation pictures (see the Composites on the second floor corridor walls) have now been established. They will be on November 5, 11, and 17. Please note the times on your calendars now. Specific sign up sheets will be made available later.

IU BASKETBALL TICKETS
Now through Sept. 26: Go to the Athletic Office, North Lobby, Assembly Hall. Bring a valid ID and $71.00 (each student must take their own ID and claim their individual voucher). Sign-up for a voucher for basketball tickets.
On Oct. 17 (only): Go to the Athletic Office, North Lobby, Assembly Hall. Turn in your voucher and claim 8 tickets (3 pre-season and 5 regular season).
***If students want to sit together at the games, they must all go together and pick-up their tickets together.

THE PUBLIC INTEREST JOB SEARCH
The search for public interest employment can be quite different from that of the law firm. Most often, the timing and targeting are not the same. In addition, your resume should be designed to tell a different story. Join us on Wednesday, Sept. 24 at Noon in Room 120 to talk about resumes, timing and tactics for the public interest job search.
CHEMISTRY AND THE LAW: A ROUND-TRIP JOURNEY
Eyal Barash of Finnegan, Henderson, Farabow, Garrett & Dunner of Washington, DC will be giving a talk about patent law for the Chemistry department on Friday, Oct. 3 at 3:30 p.m. in Chemistry Building C122. The talk is part of a symposium that the Chemistry department has put together. Mr. Barash's talk will last about 30 minutes and is preceded and followed by other speakers. If you are interested in attending Mr. Barash's talk on patent law you are asked to use the balcony entrance to the lecture hall to minimize any disturbance to other speakers.
IS THERE LIFE AFTER LAW SCHOOL
On Tuesday, Oct. 14 at 4:15 p.m. in Room 122, the Indianapolis Bar Association will sponsor a PIZZA PARTY and an opportunity for all students to explore their career options! Four to five attorneys will be present to discuss their work, job satisfaction, and career advice. Meet attorneys from both the public and private sectors while enjoying pizza and sodas.

SHERMAN MINTON MOOT COURT
The Sherman Minton Moot Court Board has arranged for Matt Gutwein to lecture at the Law School on Tuesday, Sept. 23. Mr. Gutwein will discuss how to write an effective brief and will discuss helpful tips for oral arguments--he is an outstanding advocate and speaker. The presentation will take place in Room 125 at 7 p.m. All students are invited to attend.

PRO BONO FAIR TO BE HELD ON SEPT. 23
PILF's annual Pro Bono Fair will be held on Tuesday, Sept. 23 from 11 a.m to 1 p.m in the Law School lobby. Representatives from local public interest organizations will be in the lobby to recruit volunteers for the current school year.
The Pro Bono Fair is an excellent opportunity to support local organizations, gain valuable experience, and talk to people working in the public interest about what they do. Don't miss it!
NITA TRIAL COMPETITION TRYOUTS
Tryouts for the NITA trial team are scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 18 from 9 a.m. until whenever. Each person trying out is expected to do an opening statement, a direct examination and a cross examination in 15 minutes. Witnesses will be provided. Sign-up will begin Oct. 8. Trial packages will be available Oct. 8. The person to contact for sign-up and trial packages will be Dodie Bowman in the secretarial office on the second floor of the Law School. Sign-up will be on a first come-first served basis.
The trial team will be selected by Nov. 4. Letters will be sent to everyone that tried out to the addresses listed on the sign-up sheet. That letter will also specify the first meeting time of the trial team. For those of you interested in being a trial lawyer there is no better experience available in the Law School. CHRISTIAN LEGAL SOCIETY
The Christian Legal Society will meet Tuesday, Sept. 23, Noon - 1 p.m., in Room 124.
IUSA UPDATE
To the Law School community:
Hello again! This is Christy Short, your IUSA student representative . I just wanted to fill you in on what happened at last week's Senate meeting, and what is planned for next week's Senate meeting (Thursday, Sept. 25 at 7pm in Bus 200).
Three pieces of legislation were passed at last week's Senate meeting: (1) a resolution urging the Indiana University Student Foundation to include graduate students in its programs (like IU Sing and Little 500); (2) a resolution creating a committee whose purpose is to research and recommend to the City of Bloomington a plan concerning the future re-construction of College Mall Road; and (3) a resolution authorizing the continuation of the IUSA Parking Policy Committee, whose purpose is to develop and recommend solutions to IU's many parking problems.
Several pieces of legislation will be on the floor at the next Senate meeting. Some of these deal with the internal organizations of IUSA, like new appointments to committees and the Supreme Court and a change in IUSA's summer charter. Two pieces of legislation are more relevant to you as a student. The budget for this academic year will be voted on next week, as will a change to the CASI procedures. CASI is an extension of IUSA which provides funding to student groups who seek financial assistance in providing programming to the IU community. In fact, IU law school groups may be eligible for such assistance. If you are interested, please contact me (332-5783 or cashort@indiana.edu) and I'll explain the application procedure.
One other project may be of interest to you - IUSA is currently developing a Neighborhood Watch program here at IU. If you are interested in getting involved or are just curious about the program, please contact me! Thanks!

DELTA THETA PHI RUSH
The largest and most active group in the law school invites you to join in the fun! Informal rush events for the Delta Theta Phi Law Fraternity begin this week and will continue through next week. While none of the rush events are mandatory to interested students, DTP encourages everyone to join fellow law students in these social events. IT'S TIME FOR ANOTHER DEMURRERS CLUB
Delta Theta Phi is proud to announce the first Demurrers Club of the year with special guest Professor Roger Dworkin. Don't miss Prof. Dworkin's amusing anecdotes at this popular event. ANNUAL FACULTY/STUDENT SOFTBALL TOURNAMENT
It's that time of year again! DTP invites you to round up your peers and convince your favorite law professor to form a team and register for the annual softball tournament. The games will begin on Sunday, Sept. 28 at 9 a.m. at Bryan Park. Each team must pay a $30.00 registration fee and fill out an entry form, which can be picked up at the DTP table and returned to Ryan Poor (3L), Jennifer Puplava (3L) or Paul Dean (3L). Each team must consist of 10 players, including 3 women and 1 faculty/staff member. The tournament will be played in accordance with the rules listed on the registration form. The winning team will be awarded a KEG OF BEER. Impress your profs with your athletic prowess (and perhaps they will forget about your classroom performance!) Stop by the DTP table today, and play ball!
INTERNATIONAL LAW ASSOCIATION
The International Law Association wants to thank all those attending JD, LLM and MCL students for making last Wednesday's Happy Hour at the Wild Beet a resounding success. A special thanks to Kendall Millard for his organizational efforts and Lisa Farnsworth and Dean Fromm for their participation. The feedback on the event has been very positive and many new friendships were made as well as job leads exchanged! The year has just begun and there will more to come!
