Quintanilla, two alumni named Bicentennial Professors
Professor Victor Quintanilla has been named one of Indiana University's 25 Bicentennial Professors, whose appointments were approved by the IU Board of Trustees at its December meeting. IU's Bicentennial Professorships program is part of the university's continued commitment to public outreach and community engagement. Each Bicentennial Professor will travel around the state delivering public presentations at community forums that describe -- in an engaging and accessible manner -- some of their research or professional activities. Speaking engagements will be arranged by the Office of the Bicentennial in cooperation with Indiana community leaders, with the aim of reaching all of Indiana's 92 counties. In Bloomington, Quintanilla serves as the co-director of the Center for Law, Society & Culture.

New book examines history of Dubai court
A new book from Prof. Jayanth Krishnan is earning strong reviews across the globe after its release last month.The Story of the Dubai International Financial Centre Courts: A Retrospective examines whether Western-based, English-speaking, common law commercial courts can operate successfully in an environment that is not their own—such as in the Middle East? This reality has occurred since the mid-2000s in the Emirate of Dubai, and Krishnan recounts the history of how the Dubai International Financial Centre Courts emerged. Drawing on extensive interviews with key stakeholders involved in the process, along with original documents and all of the Courts’ judgments, Krishnan's narrative offers important lessons for those seeking to understand more fully the complex interplay of how law, legal institutions and legal and political actors operate in today’s globalised world. Krishnan, the Milt and Judi Stewart Professor of Law and director of the Milt and Judi Stewart Center on the Global Legal Profession, presented a book talk at the O.P. Jindal Global University, and separately, he served on a global legal education panel sponsored by LSAC and Harvard’s Center on the Legal Profession in India in November.
3L earns prestigious Skadden Fellowship
fellowship at Indiana Legal Services, where she will establish the Opportunity Barriers Clinic to address the civil consequences of court debt faced by low-income Indiana residents. The clinic will focus on re-entry issues such as expungements, specialized driving privileges, and wage garnishment. She’s served as a law clerk with ILS since August 2017.
Beheydt is the third Indiana Law student to earn a Skadden Fellowship since the program’s inception in 1988. Launched by the Skadden Foundation to commemorate the organization’s 40th anniversary, the program provides two-year fellowships to talented young lawyers to pursue the practice of public interest law on a full-time basis. Previous Indiana Law honorees include Colleen Cotter, '90, Steven Sharpe, '05, and Professor Carwina Weng.

In Brief...
- Dean Austen Parrish has been selected by the Indiana Supreme Court to serve on a commission to review the state's bar exam amid slumping passage rates. The commission was established by Chief Justice Loretta H. Rush, '83. Parrish also briefed the Indiana University Board of Trustees at their December meeting.
- Prof. Gina-Gail Fletcher has published "Legitimate Yet Manipulative: The Conundrum of Open-Market Manipulation" for the Duke Law Journal
- Adjunct Professor Leslie Parrish received a Pro Bono Publico award from the Indiana Bar Foundation as part of its Civil Justice Awards for her work with Indiana Legal Services, Inc.
- The third edition of Labor Law in the Contemporary Workplace, a seminal textbook by Prof. Ken Dau-Schmidt and three other professors will be out early next year
- Prof. Pamela Foohey and IU Department of History Professor Rebecca Spang presented earlier this month at a Harvard Law event titled “Money as a Democratic Medium.” Foohey also appeared on the Ipse Dixit podcast discussing her consumer bankruptcy research.
- Prof. Leandra Lederman authored "Increasing Transparency in the U.S. Tax Court" for Law360's Tax Authority
