Community Legal Clinic
Sharpen and develop your skills while representing clients under the supervision of a licensed attorney. The clinic’s clients are local residents, and many — if not all — of them have limited incomes that keep them from hiring private legal counsel. This clinic focuses on family law cases, including divorce, establishment of paternity, guardianship, adoption, parenting, and custody.
In a small class setting, you’ll learn to practice the fundamental skills developed in the first year or two of law school and gain confidence in one-on-one client meetings and in the court room. You'll be introduced to:
- Client interviewing and counseling
- Fact investigation
- Drafting
- Negotiating
- Trial techniques
- Preparing for and conducting trials and administrative hearings
Students in the clinic also work with individual clients and disability rights groups to address discrimination and to gain access to benefits and services for poor people with disabilities. Clinic fieldwork includes individual client representation and participation in community projects that advocate disability rights. Most individual cases involve claims for federal and state disability benefits at administrative hearings and appeals.
The clinic is open to 2L and 3L students.
