Biography
Eden Medina is associate professor in the School of Informatics, Computing, and Engineering. Her research explores the relationship of technological innovation and political innovation, how political values can shape the design of computer systems, and how technological systems represent configurations of social and political order. Medina received her Ph.D. from MIT in the History and Social Study of Science and Technology. Her book Cybernetic Revolutionaries: Technology and Politics in Allende's Chile (MIT Press, 2011) received the Edelstein Prize for outstanding book in the history of technology and the Computer History Museum Prize for outstanding book in the history of computing.
Medina is the recipient of the IEEE Life Members' Prize in Electrical History, the Outstanding Junior Faculty Award from Indiana University, Bloomington, two Scholar's Awards from the National Science Foundation, and a New Directions Grant from the Mellon Foundation. She is the former director of the Rob Kling Center for Social Informatics at Indiana University and previously served as a Fulbright Specialist in Engineering Education. Her current research interests include studies of information technology in areas of the world outside of the United States and Europe; the intersection of science, technology and human rights; and the social, legal, and ethical aspects of computing.
Medina teaches courses on social informatics, computer and information ethics, technology and the First Amendment, and data and society.
