Taking action, effecting change
The Maurer School of Law has a longstanding tradition of working with students, faculty, and the university community to support our diversity and inclusion goals through action.
As part of this support, the Law School has created a new student-support position: a director of diversity, equity, and inclusion. Laura Fonseca, who has served as a director in the Career Services Office since 2018, will step into this position on July 1, 2021.
In addition to working with student groups and student organizations, Director Fonseca will work closely with the Faculty Diversity and Inclusion Committee; our director of student affairs, Katie Beck; and our Office of Admissions, including with our associate director of admissions, Kendra Abercrombie, who oversees our diversity recruiting initiatives. She will continue to collaborate with the Career Services Office.
In addition to her impressive background in recruiting, international development, career services, and employer relations, Fonseca has experience leading DEI trainings and discussions and has worked with the School of Medicine on diversity and hiring initiatives. She is currently pursuing her doctorate in higher education, focusing on change and institutional influence over equity-centered policy. Some of her recently presented work focuses on the importance of diverse representation in faculty, and the persistence of women of color in STEM.
The Law School's 2020 Diversity and Inclusion Report highlights the school's progress during the past year as we work to build a more inclusive community.
