This Week in the Law School
Welcome to the "Explore the World" edition of ILA. Interested in spending the summer in China, India, Japan, or South Korea? Applications for Stewart Global Fellowships in those countries are due Friday, so get moving. If fall in Washington, DC is more your fancy, an information session will take place Tuesday. 1Ls are welcome to attend to get a head-start on the fall 2018 session. On Wednesday, learn all about our numerous study abroad opportunities. Who wouldn't want to study in Paris? Finally, Barristers' Ball tickets go on sale Wednesday at noon. Get them while you can!

CLS Bible Study

Becoming a Certified Legal Intern
Join the CSO for the first of this semester's Quick Tips Information Program on how to becoming a certified legal intern. Did you know that after you complete half of law school, you can serve in all capacities of a full-fledged bar member under the supervision of a licensed attorney? You can represent clients and appear in court. Find out more about the importance of such an opportunity and the easy steps to follow to register from David Main. The program will take approximately five minutes, with the remaining time devoted to answering your questions. Room 120, noon.
Advocates for Life Call-out
Come to the Advocates for Life call-out meeting to learn about our mission to advocate for the rights of the unborn. We will introduce the AFL board, discuss our events this year, and get to know one another. Room 122, noon.
Fall 2017 Washington, DC Semester Program Information Session
2L students interested in Maurer's DC Semester Program for fall 2017 (and 1L students interested in fall 2018) are invited to an information session. The DC Program requires that students be enrolled BOTH of the following: B538 (Field Placements) and B539 (Lawyering in the Public Interest). Hear from 3Ls who have participated in the program. Prof. Sarah Jane Hughes, who supervises both courses mentioned above, will describe the process by which interested 2Ls can get academic approval to participate for fall 2017. She also will discuss associated requirements for applications to specific prospective sponsoring employers and security clearances. The Jerome Hall Law Library's Jennifer Morgan and Prof. Shana Wallace will also be on hand. Lunch will not be served, but please feel free to bring your lunch to this session. Because participation in the DC Program requires advanced planning, 1L students interested for fall 2018 are invited to attend the session as well. Room 213, noon.
Coffee with Dean Parrish
Join Dean Parrish for an informal coffee and cookie break. Share your ideas, concerns, or just get to know your dean over complimentary drinks and snacks. Jerome Hall Law Library Lobby, 2 p.m.
POP Refresher Training (Make Up)
The Protective Order Project will be holding a make up training session on Tuesday for returning volunteers who cannot attend the Friday session. Training is mandatory. Room 122, 6 p.m.

Study Abroad Information Session for 1 & 2Ls
The study abroad application deadline (Feb. 3) is fast approaching! Anyone interested in spending either semester abroad, or spending a year abroad and earning an LLM degree along with the JD, needs to come to this meeting to learn more about the opportunities, deadlines, and procedures. Returned study abroad students and exchange students from some of our partner schools will be on hand to answer specific questions. All interested students are also encouraged to make an advising appointment with Dean Lesley Davis(leedavis@indiana.edu) prior to submitting an application. There will be food for those who attend the information session. Room 124, noon.

Career Choices: In-house Counsel
Join panelists Jessica Sosa of Fronius, USA and David Lundeen, of Capital Markets at Nissan North America, as they discuss careers as in-house counsel. Lunch will be provided to those students who RSVP at least 24 hours in advance. RSVP on CareerNet / Events / Workshops. These events will open 24 hours in advance of the event to 2L and 3L students on CareerNet. Room 125, noon.
PAD Recruitment Event
All current members of Adams chapter of Phi Alpha Delta (PAD) as well as any current students who may be interested in joining the chapter this semester are invited to a happy hour. Snacks will be served. Nick's English Hut, 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.
Lunar New Year Dinner Party
Lunar New Year is an important traditional holiday celebrated by most countries in Asia at the turn of the calendar. In China, the day is known as Spring Festival when literally translated. Celebration begins typically with a reunion dinner with families, followed by traditional games and seasonal decorations. Here at Indiana Law, we'd like to continue that tradition. This Thursday we welcome you to a night of fun and entertainment as we usher into the Year of the Rooster. You'll get to experience the fun of dumpling making. Bubble tea will also be provided. No tickets needed. Faculty Lounge (Room 310), 6 to 9 p.m.

Academic Enhancement Session
You are done with your first semester of law school, now what? This final academic enhancement session will cover how to learn from your first semester and how to move forward in law school. See your PGA for your assigned date and time. Other sessions will be held Jan. 31, Feb. 1, and Feb. 2. Room 125, 4 p.m.
Resume Writing for International Students: Professional Development Series
International students in the graduate and JD programs are invited to attend this information session on western-style resume writing. Bring a copy of your own resume to compare with what you learn at the session and make notes about changes you might wish to make. Presentation by Alisa Rosales from the CSO, in cooperation with the Office of Graduate Legal Studies. Room 213, noon.
Graduate Colloquium Welcome Back Meeting
Join us for the opening event of the Graduate Legal Studies Colloquium. Information about this semester's colloquium event will be announced at the meeting. Pizza will be served. We look forward seeing you all next week. If you want to attend the opening event, please e-mail no later than Wednesday at noon. The Graduate Legal Studies Colloquium is a forum for scholarly discussion for LLMT, SJD, Ph.D. students, as well as visiting scholars and Indiana Law professors. Student Lounge, noon.

Stewart Fellows Applications Due Jan. 27
The Stewart Fellows Overseas Externship Program is accepting applications from 1Ls and 2Ls for placements for the 2017 summer in China, India, Japan, and South Korea through January 27. Applications require submission of a cover letter and resume, and applicants are welcome to apply for a position in more than one country of placement. For more information and application instructions, please see the website for the Milt & Judi Stewart Center on the Global Legal Profession. The program is also adding Uganda as a new country of placement in 2017, with one or two positions at a law firm. For more information about the program in general or this placement in particular, please contact Lara Gose (lgose@indiana.edu).
Cybersecurity Student Competition in Washington, D.C.
If you are interested in cybersecurity and collaborating with students in other programs at IU, the Cyber 9/12 Student Challenge is for you! In order to compete for a spot at the Cyber 9/12 Student Challenge, all registered teams must submit their answers to the three questions outlined below by January 31, 2017. Each answer should be 200 words or less. Please submit your answers to Anni Piiparinen (apiiparinen@atlanticcouncil.org). You may register your team before submitting your answers.
- What would you consider to be the most significant cyber incident to date, and why?
- What potential, future cyber incident keeps you up at night, why, and done by whom?
- Why did you compose your team the way you did, and what do you expect will differentiate your team from others?

Fourth Annual PILF Bowling Tournament
Join the Law School's Public Interest Law Foundation for the fourth annual PILF Bowling Tournament on February 2nd from 5-8 p.m. at the Indiana Memorial Union bowling alley. Tickets are $10 each and cover the cost of at least two games and shoe rental. Sign up in teams of five or register individually and PILF will add you to a team. There will be a prize for the winning team. PILF members will be in the lobby each day at lunch to collect money and sign people up. Start your Thursday night right by supporting public interest law at Indiana Law and having a great time with friends! Proceeds go toward Singing for Summer Salaries and PILF's summer scholarship fund.
Barristers' Ball February 17
Ticket sales for the 29th Annual Raphael M. Prevot, Jr. Barristers' Ball will begin on Wednesday at noon in room 121. Tickets are $55 and will be available until they are sold out. Please check your email for further details.
Basic Mediation and Restorative Justice Training in February
The Community Justice and Mediation Center (CJAM) offers a 40-hour training program for community members interested in learning about conflict resolution, mediation, and restorative justice. Participants will enhance their interpersonal skills in communication and listening, problem solving, and negotiation, and they will increase their understanding of restorative justice philosophy and methods, the sources of conflict, and the processes leading to constructive conflict resolution. The training will benefit any community member concerned with managing conflict and its resolution. The training provides the background and skills necessary to work as a community mediator and restorative justice practitioner and qualifies participants to volunteer in CJAM's programs. The training will take place from 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. over five weekend days: February 11, 12, 18, 19, and 25, at the Law School. The training will be led by senior mediators and restorative justice practitioners. Tuition is $300, $275 if received by January 28. Scholarships are available. How to Schedule an Event
An online form is available to plan and schedule meetings. Please use this form to request a room, notify Indiana Law Annotated, and send other information about your event. You will receive confirmation that your room has been reserved after your request has been processed. When filling out your event description, please provide all information possible, especially if you are requesting that the event be publicized.
ILA Submissions
Indiana Law Annotated is published every Monday while school is in session with news about the coming week. Submit information and articles for ILA to ila@indiana.edu by Thursday at noon for inclusion in Monday's edition. Length of submission is limited to 150 words, unless otherwise approved. Entries may be edited to ensure consistent presentation. If you're requesting a room, submit all information (including the room request) by emailing (lawrooms@indiana.edu). If you have questions about an item appearing in the ILA, please contact James Boyd (joboyd@indiana.edu; phone 855-0156). Indiana Law Annotated is archived online.
