This Week in the Law School
Congratulations to our 2016 Sherman Minton Moot Court champions Benjamin Shoptaw and Alex Spindler! In one of our best competitions in recent memory, Ben and Alex narrowly edged out our other two excellent finalists, Austin Andreas and Stephanie Goldkopf. Thank you to all of our competitors this year and to the executive board and all the faculty, staff, and alumni who helped make this year's event possible.
We're hoping to collect more than 250 pounds of food this week for the Hoosier Hills Food Bank. See the bins around the building? Put in canned goods and other items to help local residents as we approach Thanksgiving. You can make a big difference in someone's life.

Monday, November 14
Guns, Bird Feathers, and Overcriminalization: Why Courts Should Take the Second Amendment Seriously?
George Mocsary, an assistant professor at Southern Illinois University School of Law, will discuss how rigorously the courts should enforce the Second Amendment, how gun owners are demonized in popular culture, and how they are targeted with draconian laws. Room 122, noon.
Where to Draw the Line
Come join the International Law Society for a panel discussion with several of our current graduate students as they discuss disputed borders and territories across the world. Our panelists will discuss everything ranging from the history of the disputed territories to the legal barriers that stand in the way of successful negotiations. Free lunch will be provided. Room 124, noon.
CLS Bible Study
Join CLS for a Bible study where we will read and discuss scripture. Feel free to bring your lunch. All are welcome. Room 216, noon.
1L Academic Session and Study Tables
This academic session is geared towards helping the BLSA 1Ls succeed on their first law school exams. Our first session will focus on contracts and torts. BLSA 2Ls and 3Ls will be in attendance to provide helpful test taking strategies, tips, and advice for 1Ls preparing for finals. Once the session has concluded, the 1Ls will be given the chance to ask questions and stay around for study tables. All BLSA members are welcome to this event, and dinner will be provided. Room 120, 5 to 7 p.m.

Advocates For Life Free Coffee Event
Free coffee! Every year the Advocates for Life provide free coffee for law students to help ease the stress of approaching finals. The time has come again! Stop by on Tuesday morning to grab some coffee and hear about what AFL is doing this year. We will be in the Baier Hall lobby at 7:30 a.m. and will stay until the coffee is gone.

Lexis isn't just for legal research. It can also help you prepare for final exams. Come find out how in this short, 15-minute session. Students only need to attend one of the sessions. Women's Law Caucus Canvassing and Happy Hour
Please join us as the Women's Law Caucus and the Protective Order Project canvas Bloomington's businesses in order to get donations for the Women's Law Caucus Auction. IU VITA Callout
It's the most wonderful time of the year: it is the beginning of tax season! With that glorious thought, the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program wants to get a head start by hosting a call-out meeting. This meeting will provide crucial details including when we will be having training, when we will be providing our services, and we will answer any questions you have. Credit Transfer Option (CTO)/LLM to JD Transfer Information Session
Students interested in learning more about the credit-transfer option (CTO) as a way to try out for the JD program should attend this session. Professor Gabrielle Goodwin (director of Graduate Legal Studies) and Ms. Allison Foust (director of Graduate Admissions) will present. The CTO application deadline is December 18, 2016. The Asian Pacific American Law Student Association is back with Bollywood Night! Labor Law Group Symposium on the New Restatement of Employment Law
In 2015 the American Law Institute published a Restatement of Employment Law, 3rd covering a broad array of evolving subjects in employment law including: employment contracts, the "at will" doctrine, discharges in violation of public policy, the implied covenant of good faith and fair dealing, covenants not to compete, employee privacy rights and torts against employees. At the conference the various chapters of the Restatement will be considered by academics, practitioners and judges from across the country who will debate the merits of the Restatement and how it might affect further evolution of employment law in these areas. The Restatement was controversial in its passage, and this is the first conference since its publication to consider its merit and possible future impact on the law. Conference sessions will be held in the Faculty Conference Room. Faculty and students are welcome to attend. Friday's session begins at 8:45 and runs through 5 p.m. Saturday's schedule begins at 8 a.m. and concludes at 12:20 p.m.
1Ls Summer Externships: How to Use Winter Break Effectively
This session will focus on how to prepare to apply for summer opportunities during your winter break. Learn some of the basics of the application process so you can use your winter break to network at home (if that is where you want to be in summer), to get your application materials in the best shape possible, to develop a strategy, and to start applying for summer externships. This will also provide a brief overview of the OCI (on-campus interview) session for summer externships which several Indiana nonprofits and government organizations will participate in. Prof. Inge Van der Cruysse, faculty director of externship programs, will lead the session. Sign-up through Indiana Law CareerNet. Room 125, noon.

On October 13, Prof. Charlie Geyh participated in a roundtable discussion at Syracuse University on Keith Bybee's book How Civility Works. On October 18, he discussed the future of judicial ethics on a panel at a conference for federal district judges at Vanderbilt University. On October 24, he delivered the keynote address on his book, Courting Peril, to a workshop of the Seventh Circuit Judicial Conference, at Notre Dame University. On November 3, he gave a presentation (remotely – thanks, O'Hare!) on judicial disqualification at a conference hosted by the Institute for the Advancement of the American Legal System (founded by Justice Sandra Day O'Connor), in Colorado Springs. On November 14, he gave a talk on judicial ethics and internet research at the annual meeting of the Council of Chief Judges of State Courts of Appeal, in Raleigh, NC.
Staff News
We are pleased to welcome Alisa Rosales, our new director of career services. Alisa comes to us from Equal Justice Wyoming, where she has been a staff attorney. Previously she was career and professional development positions at the University of Wyoming College of Law, DePaul University College of Law, and University of Notre Dame Law School. Her emphasis will be on assisting students with career opportunities in public interest law. Today is her first day. Welcome, Alisa!
Announcements
Student workers in Labor Law Inc. are working with President Ken Dau-Schmidt to raise money for the annual Movember Campaign. Movember is a national campaign that supports outreach and funds research to find a cure for all mens cancers including prostate and testicular cancer. Although their recent contract negotiations were hard fought, one thing that was easy for the Union and President Dau-Schmidt to agree on was the need to raise funding and awareness on men's health issues. The labor law students will be tabling in the lobby Monday through Thursday at noon until November 22. They have also set up a GoFundMe page. President Dau-Schmidt has agreed to match the first $300 of donations.
Food Drive for Hoosier Hills Food Bank This Week
Once again the Law School will be holding a food drive benefiting the Hoosier Hills Food Bank which collects, stores and distributes food to nonprofit agencies that feed the hungry in Monroe and surrounding counties. HHFB is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. Barrels will be placed on the ground, first, and second floors of Baier Hall and on the second floor of the Lewis Building for the donation of non-perishable food items. The Food Bank has a particular need for protein items such as peanut butter, canned tuna, canned soup, and canned or bagged beans. Last year our collective effort resulted in a donation of 208 pounds of food to the food bank. Our goal is to beat that and collect 250 pounds this year. Look for the barrels next week and please donate generously. You can make a difference in someone's life. For more information contact lawosa@indiana.edu.

Indiana Law Annotated is published every Monday while school is in session with news about the coming week. Submit information and articles for ILA to ila@indiana.edu by Thursday at noon for inclusion in Monday's edition. Length of submission is limited to 150 words, unless otherwise approved. Entries may be edited to ensure consistent presentation. If you're requesting a room, submit all information (including the room request) by emailing (lawrooms@indiana.edu).
