This Week in the Law School
Prof. Kevin Brown will talk about his work and life today at noon. Several student organizations need leaders. Boost your resume and help maintain our school's vibrant community by taking the reins. Spring externship opportunities abound; learn how to nab one on Tuesday. And if you're considering a judicial externship this spring, applications are due today. 1Ls, get a head-start on your career path by attending a special CSO orientation session Thursday. If you plan to attend Socctoberfest — and really, why wouldn't you? — please sign up by Monday, Oct. 3. Details in the announcements.
Finally, we welcome our Alumni Board Friday. The school will present Distinguished Service Awards to three alumni that afternoon. Congratulations to this year's recipients: Scott Bassett, '86; Indianapolis Mayor Joe Hogsett, '81; and Randy Lebedoff, '75. We will also host the school's alumni weekend Saturday, with reunions for the classes of 1966, 1991, and 2011. Say hello if you get the chance.

Faculty Speaker Series: Professor Kevin Brown
Join the Student Bar Association and the Black Law Students Association for the first faculty speaker series event of the year with Prof. Kevin Brown. Learn more about Prof. Brown's work relating to race, law, and education as well as his life outside the classroom. Feel free to bring you own questions as well. Light snacks will be provided. CLS Bible Study

Navy JAG Corps Information Session
Lieutenant Kyle Doherty-Peters, '13, and Lieutenant Julie Gillaspy,'13, will be giving a presentation on the U.S. Navy Judge Advocate General's (JAG) Corps. The U.S. Navy's JAG Corps is made up of more than 800 attorneys (commissioned naval officers) based throughout the world, both ashore and at sea. Our practice encompasses a broad array of law as we provide the legal expertise necessary to conduct military operations worldwide. Practice areas include military justice, legal assistance, international and operational law, administrative law, information operations, and intelligence law. The presentation will be informational only; however, we will provide information on the application process, internship opportunities, and provide helpful advice relevant to those interested in any branch of service. You can apply for a commission as early as your 2L year. The application deadline for the Fall 2016 Student Program (open to 2Ls and 3Ls) is September 30, 2016. Environmental Law Society 1L Representative Elections

Spring Externship Workshop for 2Ls and 3Ls
The application process for spring externships (one day/week) starts fully in October. Several nonprofit and government organizations will do on campus interviews for spring externship interviews scheduled the week after fall break. Others will be posting spring externships on CareerNet and make selections during the same time frame, but with on-site, Skype, or no interviews. This workshop will give you the nuts and bolts of the application process and the types of opportunities you can apply for. Room 120, noon.
Sherman Minton Moot Court Competition Bailiff Training
Anyone interested in serving as a bailiff for the Sherman Minton Moot Court Competition is invited to attend this meeting to learn what being a bailiff entails and how to perform the job. This is an excellent opportunity for 1Ls and other students not competing in this year's event. There will be two training sessions. Room 122, noon; and Room 120, 5 p.m.
In-house IP Attorney Panel and Reception
The Center for Intellectual Property Research will host a panel and reception featuring in-house attorneys in IP practice. This event will bring together a number of lawyers from the region to discuss practice from an in-house perspective. The structured portion of the evening will begin at 6 p.m.; each panelist will begin with a brief introduction. Following these informal remarks, the floor will be opened for a Q&A session. Advocates for Life Discussion Night
Join AFL for a cordial discussion of end-of-life issues. We will consider current and pending legislation as well as theoretical ideas. This will be a moderated discussion where every voice may be heard. All are welcome. Room 120, 7 p.m.

CSO Orientation for 1Ls
1Ls are strongly encouraged to attend this session to learn all about what the Career Services Office can offer you throughout your time as a law student but particularly in your 1L year. It's never too early to begin thinking about your career path. Moot Court Room, 2:20 p.m.
Kaplan Bar Exam Review session for LLM Students
Kaplan has created a bar review course specifically designed for LLM students, addressing the fundamental skills and knowledge not typically covered in an LLM curriculum, yet are critical to passing the bar exam. Come learn more about what Kaplan has to offer. Room 213, noon.
CIPR Colloquium: Professor Peter Yu
The Center for Intellectual Property Research will host Peter Yu (Professor of Law and Co-Director of the Center for Law and Intellectual Property at Texas A&M University School of Law), who will present "The Quest for a User-Friendly Copyright Regime in Hong Kong" as part of Prof. MarshallLeaffer's IP Colloquium. Prof. Leandra Lederman recently presented her paper titled "To What Extent Does Enforcement Crowd Out Voluntary Tax Compliance?" in two places. On September 15, she presented it at Boston College Law School's Tax Policy Workshop. On September 9, she presented it at the Midwest Law and Economics Association meeting, hosted by Emory Law School.

The Office of International Programs and Graduate Legal Studies is currently seeking JD students with experience editing writing from non-native English speakers. Students will be editing SJD students' dissertations on a wide variety of legal topics. Spring 2017 Judicial Externship Applications Due Today
Students (2L and 3L) interested in applying for a judicial externship during the spring 2017 (one day a week, two credits) in Federal Circuit Court, District Court, and Bankruptcy Court, as well as the Indiana Supreme Court, the Indiana Court of Appeals, the Indiana Tax Court, and Indiana Trial Courts, should check posting in CareerNet and apply to Prof. Inge Van der Cruysse (ivanderc@indiana.edu) by Sept. 26.
Welcome to the 14th Annual JD/LLM Socctoberfest
This year's soccer match will take place on Friday, October 21st at 4:30 p.m. at Karst Farm Park, fields 1 and 2, on the west side of Bloomington. It is a co-ed event that welcomes all ability levels. After the games, which will end at approximately 7:00 p.m., we will have a cookout in the area adjacent to the soccer fields. Participants, fellow students, and family are all welcome to attend. If you are a JD or LLM student interested in playing, please e-mail Rhea May (rhmay@indiana.edu), and indicate your ability level based on the following categories and your shirt size (Small, Medium, Large, X-Large, 2XL -- note, these shirts have an athletic fit):

How to Schedule an Event
An online form is available to plan and schedule meetings. Please use this form to request a room, notify Indiana Law Annotated, and send other information about your event. You will receive confirmation that your room has been reserved after your request has been processed. When filling out your event description, please provide all information possible, especially if you are requesting that the event be publicized.
ILA Submissions
Indiana Law Annotated is published every Monday while school is in session with news about the coming week. Submit information and articles for ILA to ila@indiana.edu by Thursday at noon for inclusion in Monday's edition. Length of submission is limited to 150 words, unless otherwise approved. Entries may be edited to ensure consistent presentation. If you're requesting a room, submit all information (including the room request) by emailing (lawrooms@indiana.edu). If you have questions about an item appearing in the ILA, please contact James Boyd (joboyd@indiana.edu; phone 855-0156). Indiana Law Annotated is archived online.
