This Week in the Law School
You know the feeling of sadness that washes over you when your group's event doesn't draw a huge crowd? That sense of failure, like you did something wrong? That's how we feel when our big lectures go unnoticed. This week brings the first of a handful of endowed lectures that will bring in renowned speakers this spring. The Jerome Hall Lecture will take place Thursday with Professor Samuel Issacharoff, and it would just be fabulous if you could attend.

Let's Talk: Intersections in Life and the Law
Please join the Feminist Law Forum for our second consciousness-raising event in a series entitled "Let's Talk: Intersections in Life and the Law." This event is being co-hosted by student organizations including the Federalist Society, ACS, LSRJ, Advocates for Life, BLSA, LLSA, APALSA, and many others. The Bar Exam Series: Kaplan Presents on the Indiana Bar Exam
As part of the Office of Student Affairs' Bar Exam Series, Kaplan will present on the Indiana Bar exam and provide some information on the Illinois bar. ACS Callout
The American Constitution Society has helped bring amazing speakers to the Law School such as Dahlia Lithwick and Jim Obergefell. Come to learn about future ACS events, including the National Convention (last year's keynote speaker was the Hon. Ruth Bader Ginsburg), and how to run for a position on the executive board for next year. Room 124, noon.
PAD/POP Fashion Show Meeting
All Phi Alpha Delta and Protective Order Project members are encouraged to attend this general body meeting in order to plan the PAD Fashion Show Fundraiser benefiting POP and New Hope Shelter. 1L Academic Enhancement Session
You are done with your first semester of law school, now what? Our student affairs fellows will present how to learn from your first semester and how to move forward in law school. California Drought: Professor Darren Ficklin
In conjunction with a class by Prof. Rob Fischman, Prof. Darren Ficklin from the IU Geography Department will give a public lecture on the hydrological, political, economic, and ecological impacts of the California drought. Room 120, 6:40 p.m.

Jerome Hall Lecture: Samuel Issacharoff
For this year's Jerome Hall Endowed Lecture we will host Samuel Issacharoff, the Reiss Professor of Constitutional Law at New York University School of Law. He will be presenting "Outstanding Campaign Finance." Moot Court Room, noon.
Storytelling with Susan Bennett
Good lawyers are effective storytellers. People are moved by stories, not by legal theories; it's a lawyer's job to tell the client's story to evoke empathetic understanding. Come explore the role of narrative storytelling in law practice with Susan Bennett, hosted by the Access to Justice Program and the LRW and Clinical Faculty. Susan Bennett is a professor of law at the Washington College of Law of American University in Washington, D.C. She founded and directs the Community and Economic Development Law Clinic, which represents neighborhood-based organizations, small businesses and tenant associations. Before joining the faculty of the Washington College of Law, Professor Bennett practiced as a staff attorney with the Maryland Legal Aid Bureau, where she specialized in housing and consumer law. CACR Security Seminar Series: Insider Threats and Elections
The insider problem is considered one of the most serious in computer security. But the precise definition of "insider" varies, sometimes wildly, among researchers. The result is that the problem, in its most broadest sense, is ill-defined. This talk, by UC Davis Professor Matt Bishop, examines several different aspects of the different definitions and situations broadly classified as "insiders" and develops a definition based on policy models. Prof. LeandraLederman's Tax Policy Colloquium will host Benn Leff (American University Washington College of Law) who will present "Taxing Governmental Marijuana Sales." CIPR IP Pro Bono Services Launch Event in Evansville
The Center for Intellectual Property Research is holding a launch event for the IP Clinic and PatentConnect for Hoosiers at Tin Man Brewing Company in Evansville. Join Clinic Director Professor Norman Hedges, students from the IP Clinic, and CIPR staff as they share how the CIPR's pro bono services work to protect the IP rights of Indiana startups and inventors in need of pro bono patent, trademark, and/or copyright assistance. ATJ and PILF Present: Recent LGBT Issues in Indiana
Our first event in our Social Justice Thursdays series this semester will be "Recent LGBT Issues in Indiana." We hope to discuss recently proposed legislation in Indiana that would severely impede the rights of LGBT individuals in our state. Outlaw will be presenting from 7-7:30, after which time attendees will be free to mix and mingle or to continue the conversation on various issues surrounding the status of LGBT rights in Indiana today. Graduate Legal Studies Colloquium Meeting
The Graduate Legal Studies Colloquium is a weekly meeting for graduate students to discuss common academic concerns and research interests. We are happy to have Dr. Gap-rae Kim, a senior researcher from the Korea Capital Market Institute and visiting scholar, present "How to Develop Social Impact Bonds." Faculty News
Congratulations to Prof. Norman Hedges for being one of the five recipients of the 2016 Federal Laboratory Consortium for Technology Transfer's State and Local Economic Development Award for his work with the Intellectual Property Clinic and PatentConnect for Hoosiers. Prof. Hedges will continue to raise awareness for the Center for Intellectual Property Research's pro bono services this month by being a keynote speaker and mentor at Startup Weekend Evansville February 19-21.
On Feb. 9, Prof. Leandra Lederman presented her paper, now entitled "IRS Reform: Politics As Usual?", at a faculty colloquium at the Indiana University McKinney School of Law in Indianapolis.
Announcements
Prof. Jim Barnes is looking for a research assistant to assist in collecting material for a revision of two business law textbooks. Preference is for someone who has taken bankruptcy law. Work would be done over the next four weeks and likely would require no more than 15-20 hours. Contact Prof. Barnes (barnesaj@indiana.edu) for further information.
Maurer Madness Sign-ups
It's that time of year again: Maurer Madness, the Law School's annual basketball tournament hosted by the Latino Law Student Association and Sports and Entertainment Law Society, is coming up on March 5. Grab 10 of your best ballers to form a team for the 5 on 5 games. The tournament is open to all IU students, but each team must have at least one law student. Player fees include $10 and 2 canned food items that will be donated to charity. SELS will be tabling Monday through Wednesday from noon to 1 p.m., so be sure to sign up if you are interested in competing.

An online form is available to plan and schedule meetings. Please use this form to request a room, notify Indiana Law Annotated, and send other information about your event. You will receive confirmation that your room has been reserved after your request has been processed. When filling out your event description, please provide all information possible, especially if you are requesting that the event be publicized.
ILA Submissions
Indiana Law Annotated is published every Monday while school is in session with news about the coming week. Submit information and articles for ILA to ila@indiana.edu by Thursday at noon for inclusion in Monday's edition. Length of submission is limited to 150 words, unless otherwise approved. Entries may be edited to ensure consistent presentation. If you're requesting a room, submit all information (including the room request) by emailing (lawrooms@indiana.edu). If you have questions about an item appearing in the ILA, please contact James Boyd (joboyd@indiana.edu; phone 855-0156). Indiana Law Annotated is archived online.
