Space Law Society
Mission
Space Law Society (SLS) serves as an academic forum and professional resource for students interested in the emerging field of space law. SLS strives to create an academic environment that promotes innovation in the development of space law and policy. By inviting both technological and legal experts, students in SLS are able to better conceptualize future space law and policy.
About SLS
Do you use GPS? The Internet? Television? Come see how these technologies are affected by space law and policy. The newly established Space Law Society was founded with the purpose of providing a forum for discussing current and future advancements in space law at the national and international level. SLS hopes to incorporate students from different academic backgrounds into law and policy discussions and invite space law experts to discuss their research and work.
Space Law Society was founded in December 2022 to create a student group on campus for debate and discussion about the future of law in space. SLS's initial focus was to invite legal and technical experts to deliver lectures related to space. The combination of technology and law is inherent to fulfilling our mission.
The culture of our organization is best exemplified by our motto: "sic itur ad astra," meaning "thus one journeys to the stars" and comes from Virgil's Aeneid. The students in SLS all share that sense of wonder about a future where space seems like a not-so-distant destination. Though space has been a popular subject of science-fiction, our reliance on space systems is a fact. SLS students recognize that space has already become a part of our daily lives, whether it is the satellite providing weather information as we plan our day, the GPS we use to go on trips, or even the internet connection we use to visit this website.
SLS members participate in activities such as academic lectures, policy discussions, social events, and space launch and eclipse watch parties. We want to enhance our members' academic and social achievement and hope that we can work together to build a strong community and foster harmony among the various law school organizations.
