Sharpening the Teeth of DOGE and Rethinking Regulation

Kenneth M. Rosen, professor at the University of Alabama School of Law, will explore the bold new concept of the Department of Governmental Efficiency (DOGE), introduced by Elon Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy under the Trump administration. What will DOGE look like? How will it work? Join us for a talk on how this initiative could transform governance, streamline regulation, and redefine public sector efficiency.

The Tracy M. Sonneborn Lecture with Professor Donna Nagy
5 - 7 p.m. at Indiana Memorial Union Solarium
Executive Associate Dean Donna Nagy will present "What Corporate Law Can Teach Us About Government Ethics" as the Spring Sonneborn Lecture. The Sonneborn Award honors faculty for accomplishments in the areas of teaching and research. The award, named for the late eminent scientist Professor Tracy M. Sonneborn, is given to an exemplary researcher who is also well known as an exemplary teacher. Prof. Nagy is the third Indiana Law professor (Susan Williams in 2014; Leandra Lederman in 2019) to earn the award.

CAPS workshop: Anxiety Toolbox

Anxiety Toolbox is a fast-paced three-session group specifically designed to help people who struggle with a variety of anxiety-related concerns (e.g., panic attacks, generalized anxiety, test anxiety, etc.). The goal of this group is to provide education on anxiety and to teach coping skills for managing anxiety symptoms.
Hosted by Brad Dieter, the Law School’s Counselor-in-Residence.

This workshop, hosted by IU's Substance Use Intervention Services, is designed to help students and organizations examine the role that alcohol plays in their lives; teach skills to moderate alcohol use in order to mitigate negative consequences; and understand how other drugs can influence the effects of alcohol. Additionally, students learn how to recognize the signs of overdose and intervene safely.

Live from Baier Hall: Harpist Theresa Labuda
Noon - 1 p.m. in the first floor lobby
Originally from Southern California, Theresa Labuda began her musical studies at age five on the piano and then harp at age nine. She is currently pursuing a Performer’s Diploma in Harp Performance from the IU Jacobs School of Music. She also received B.M. and M.M. degrees in Harp Performance at Jacobs, and served as the Harp Department Graduate Assistant from 2022-2023. In addition to performing solo and chamber works throughout the U.S., she has also shared her talents abroad.

In honor of Wellness Week, take some time from your stressful schedule to unwind and relax with ChIPs. Our instructor (from IU's SRSC) will join us for a short yoga session and a mindfulness exercise. You do not have to be a ChIPs member to join. “Treat-yourself-well” goodie bags will be available while supplies last. Do something to take care of YOU this semester!

Legislative Mandates, Speech Controversies, and Institutional Academic Freedom

Most discussions of academic freedom focus on faculty. But how should we think about the academic freedom of universities as institutions? At a time when legislatures are imposing new mandates and universities are revising their policies on speech, one of the nation’s leading experts on the First Amendment and academic freedom will discuss vital questions of concern to all who work and study on our campuses.
David Rabban is Regents Chair in Law and Distinguished Teaching Professor at the University of Texas at Austin. He served as counsel to the American Association of University Professors for several years before joining the Texas faculty in 1983. He later served as its general counsel and as chair of its committee on academic freedom and tenure. His most recent book is Academic Freedom: From Professional Norm to First Amendment Right.

The Black Law Students Association will host the 37th annual Rapheal M. Prevot, Jr. Barristers’ Ball, "A Starry Night Masquerade," on Saturday, March 1, 6:30 – 11 p.m. at the Woolery Mill. Tickets are available for purchase through February 14, starting at $75 per person for students and $90 for faculty, staff, and alumni.
