CACR Speaker Series: Michael A. McRobbie on REN-ISAC

Marking the 20th anniversary of the Research and Education Networking Information and Analysis Center (REN-ISAC), this talk will highlight the complex series of events that led to REN-ISAC's founding and pay tribute to all who have worked so hard for two decades for the center’s success.
University Chancellor and President Emeritus Michael A. McRobbie served as the 18th president of Indiana University from 2007 to 2021, and holds faculty appointments in computer science, philosophy, cognitive science, informatics, and computer technology. A computer scientist and philosopher, McRobbie has been an active researcher in high performance computing and networking, artificial intelligence, automated reasoning, and various areas of logic.

Graduate Colloquium: Motion Picture Copyright in the Data-Driven Age

Chieh-Li (Jerry) Pai, S.J.D. candidate, will discuss the tremendous change in motion pictures in the digital area to use motion pictures with AI technologies. The AI technologies in creating human-like expressions for motion pictures brought attention to cause the uncertain copyright challenges.
Jerry Pai proposes that the copyright materials used for data-driven results must be public and infringed final conduct content need to be voluntarily negotiated for reuse.

2023 Bloomington Community Out of the Darkness Walk
The Office of Student Affairs and the Student Bar Association are organizing a Maurer School of Law team to participate in the 2023 Bloomington Community Out of the Darkness Walk, which will be held on Sunday, October 22, 2023 in Switchyard Park beginning at 2 p.m. This walk is put on each year by the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention; its goal is to raise awareness of mental health, remember those we've lost to suicide, and raise money for suicide research and prevention. There is no fundraising requirement for participants, but participants do need to register ahead of time. Anyone interested may register here and select "IU Maurer School of Law" as their team.
Attention students in Orenstein's Civ Pro class
Professor Orenstein is suing all non-Indiana domiciliaries in her Civ Pro class for $80,000 each in the Federal District Court for the Southern District of Indiana. This is your official notification of the suit against you for breach of contract for failing to provide her with coffee, cream no sugar, promptly at 10:30 Mondays, Tuesdays, and Wednesdays. New international law resource for everybody
The Law School has purchased an academic partnership with the American Society of International Law (ASIL). Faculty and students might want to learn about the benefits and opportunities provided by this new membership.
Basic mediation and restorative justice training for fall
40 hours beginning Sept. 8 on Zoom
The Community Justice and Mediation Center (CJAM) offers a 40-hour training program for those interested in learning about conflict resolution, mediation, and restorative justice. Participants will enhance their interpersonal skills in communication and listening, problem solving, and negotiation, and they will increase their understanding of restorative justice philosophy and methods, sources of conflict, and processes leading to constructive conflict resolution. The training should benefit anyone concerned with managing conflict and its resolution. The training also provides the background and skills necessary to work as a community mediator and restorative justice practitioner and qualifies participants to volunteer in CJAM's programs. The training will be led by senior mediators and restorative justice practitioners.
The training will take place on Zoom Thursday evenings, 7-9 p.m., and Saturdays, 8:30 a.m.-3 p.m., over five weeks beginning September 7 and continuing through October 7. Tuition is $300 ($275 if received by September 1). Learn more about the training and to register. You may also apply for a scholarship.
