Welcome to the first edition of Indiana Law Annotated for the 2023-24 academic year. For our new community members, ILA is sent around 3 p.m. every Sunday when classes are in session. We'll bring you the events for the upcoming week so you may plan your schedule accordingly. We also maintain an events calendar you can bookmark. For anyone submitting an event or announcement for ILA, the deadline is noon on Thursdays. Best wishes for a successful semester!
Monday
Judges and Lawyers Assistance Program
In Baier Hall by appointment
Are you feeling stressed or overwhelmed? Care-giving or grieving? Maybe you are concerned for someone else. Don’t wait; help and support are available.
The Judges and Lawyers Assistance Program will be in Baier Hall meeting individually with students. All meetings are free and confidential.
Please make an appointment in advance by calling 317-833-0370. Tell them you’re calling to set an appointment with a counselor at the Maurer School of Law. You will be provided with a date, time, and room number.
Stewart Fellows Ignite presentations
6 - 8 p.m. in 120 and on Zoom
The 2023 Stewart Fellows cohort will share insights from their summer internship experiences following the Ignite presentation format.

IP lunch panel: Pathways to careers in IP
Noon - 1 p.m. in 121
Join the Center for Intellectual Property Research for a panel discussion with practitioners from varying undergrad and professional backgrounds sharing diverse perspectives on their paths to IP careers.
Wednesday
1L Workshops: Effective note-taking and class preparation strategies
Noon - 1 p.m. in the DeLaney Moot Court Room
This workshop is designed to equip you with the essential skills and techniques necessary to take meaningful and organized notes, prepare for classes efficiently, and ultimately enhance your academic performance.
Wednesday Wanders with Prof. Rob Fischman
Noon - 1 p.m. in the DeLaney Moot Court Room
What is a Wednesday Wander? It’s a casual social jaunt around campus and the nearby Bloomington community to introduce law students to the beautiful spaces and resources around them. Wednesday Wanders are hosted by a Law School faculty or staff member and occur on various Wednesdays throughout the fall semester at 4 p.m. The walks depart from the Student Lounge doors of Baier Hall and are usually around 30-45 minutes in duration. Our initial Wednesday Wander will be led by Prof. Rob Fischman, who will cover "Architecture and the Lore of Campus Old Crescent."
POP return volunteer training
6 - 8 p.m. in the DeLaney Moot Court Room
The Protective Order Project requires all return volunteers to attend the Return Volunteer Training. This training will give a refresh of current guidelines and update volunteers on new protocols.
Thursday
ELS discussion: Held v. Montana
Noon - 1 p.m. in 214
Join the Environmental Law Society for a conversation with Professors Rob Fischman and John Applegate about the recent youth climate case in Montana. A Montana state court recently decided in favor of a group of young people who alleged that the state violated their right to a "clean and healthful environment." Bring your lunch, all students are welcome!
Advanced standing orientation session

Advanced standing JD students must attend this mandatory continuing orientation session.
Doctoral discussion with Simon Sun
Noon - 1 p.m. on Zoom
Simon Sun (S.J.D. candidate) will share his practical experience publishing research topics and preparing for the academic presentation.
Friday
Student organization leadership training
Noon - 1:30 p.m. in the DeLaney Moot Court Room
Student organization leaders must attend this annual leadership training with the Office for Student Affairs to discuss organizational activities, policies and procedures. Student organization presidents and treasurers are required to attend this meeting, or to send a proxy in their place. Any event chairs/planners are also encouraged to attend. Lunch will be provided, likely pizza.

Jerome Hall Law Library Welcome Week
To kick off the academic year, stop by the Law Library for their Welcome Week, 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., Monday through Wednesday! Drop by the Welcome Week tables in the library lobby for donuts, coffee, and other snacks, as well as the opportunity to score some library swag. We hope to see you there!
Congratulations 2023-24 Dean's Writing Fellows
The legal writing faculty are pleased to announce this year’s Dean’s Writing Fellows: 3Ls Abigail Flowers, Amani Khoury, Bilal Mozaffar, and Tyler Parrish; and 2Ls Will Brown, LuLu Faulk, Anastasia Rivera, Adam Rosenthall, and Raven Vance. The Dean’s Writing Fellow position connects outstanding upper-class students with a legal writing professor and one section of the first-year Legal Research and Writing course. The writing faculty look forward to working with this year’s Fellows and with the Class of 2026!
Lunch for Student Parents/Caregivers

Hosted by the Office for Student Affairs, this special lunch aims to build connections between students who are parenting or caregiving. The goal is to provide a forum for mutual support, resource sharing, and celebration of your decision to take on the challenge and opportunity of law school while others depend upon you. Please RSVP no later than Thursday, August 17.
Faculty and Staff News
Prof. Sarah Jane Hughes was commended by the ABA's The Business Lawyer editors as the most frequent contributor to the Annual Survey of Cyberspace Law in its 25-year history. Professor Hughes has had 17 articles in that quarter-century survey of cyber law, particularly developments in laws affecting electronic payments and financial services. These survey articles have touched on cryptocurrencies, mobile payments, state laws on payments, and FTC and CFPB enforcement actions or regulatory initiatives. Soon, she will make it 18 out of 26 surveys with the piece she is completing this summer with Tom Kierner '15 and Stephen T. Middlebrook this time.
