Today is Constitution Day, and what better way to celebrate than by hearing from Duke Law's Chris Schroeder. Prof. Schroeder has been centrally involved in federal judicial nominations in his capacity as assistant attorney general at the U.S. Department of Justice and as chief counsel for the U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee.

Constitution Day: Supreme Court Nominations in a Polarized Senate
Prof. Christopher Schroeder, of Duke University, former assistant attorney general at the U.S. Department of Justice and former chief counsel of the U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee, will present today's Constitution Day lecture. Article III provides that federal judges “shall hold their Offices during good behaviour, and shall, at stated times, receive for their services, a compensation, which shall not be diminished during their continuance in office.” The provision establishes judicial independence as one of the foundations of the Constitution’s system of separation of powers. The most important moment when the institution of the independent judiciary intersects with democracy and politics occurs when judges are nominated by the President and then scrutinized by the Senate; none of these moments is more critical than those that involve Supreme Court justices. When democratic politics is as dysfunctional and polarized as is currently the case, what can the country expect from these moments? And what do those expectations augur for the role of the Supreme Court in our constitutional system? Lunch provided. Moot Court Room, noon.
Protective Order Project New Member Make-up Training
The Protective Order Project is a law student directed pro bono organization that assists victims of sexual assault, stalking, and domestic violence in obtaining civil protective orders. This is a make-up training for those who missed the new member training earlier this month. The training is mandatory for all students who would like to begin volunteering this fall. Come hear Justin Walker, former clerk to Judge Brett Kavanaugh and assistant professor of law at the University of Louisville Brandeis School of Law, discuss with Prof. Ian Samuel Judge Kavanaugh's confirmation process and the impact of Trump's nominee on the future of the Supreme Court. Environmental Law Society Meeting and 1L Elections

The LGBT Clinical Project engages law students, attorneys, scholars, and LGBT advocates to address the unmet legal needs of Indiana's LGBT community and support equality efforts of Indiana LGBT advocacy organizations. Participants in the Sherman Minton Moot Court Competition are invited to attend this legal research workshop. We will use a previous moot court problem to discuss the best ways to find cases and statutes for your brief. Socctoberfest Sign-ups
This year's soccer tournament will take place on Friday, October 19 at 5:00 p.m. at Karst Farm Park in Bloomington. This event is open to men and women in any degree program at the Law School. All ability levels are welcome and encouraged to sign up. After the games, there will be a cookout for participants and spectators. Participants, fellow students, and family are all welcome to attend.
