The Office of Career and Professional Development is hosting a panel of Bloomington-based experts to discuss alternative legal careers in higher education from noon to 1 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 25, in room 213.
Professor James Blumstein from Vanderbilt University Law School will discuss the Voting Rights Act, state redistricting plans, and the voting rights cases in front of the Supreme Court this term at noon on Thursday, Feb. 26, in room 120.

Lunch with a Lawyer Featuring Frank Kimball
Get the inside scoop from Frank Kimball about the job market in Chicago and D.C. during Lunch with a Lawyer from noon to 1 p.m. in room 121. Kimball is the only former hiring partner of one of the largest national firms who provides search services, project consulting, and training for leading law firms. He has interviewed, hired, placed, or counseled more than 9,500 law students and attorneys. Each year he meets one-on-one with more than 200 law students who are considering joining the nation's leading law firms and with more than 200 lateral candidates. Kimball was a partner with McDermott Will & Emery from 1986-1992, served for six years on the hiring committee, ran two summer programs, and was chair of the national hiring committee in 1990-1992. He owns Chicago's Kimball Professional Management. During his presentation, he will focus on the realities of the legal job market in this very uncertain economy and provide insight about the Chicago and D.C. markets specifically. He will discuss strategies and techniques to help you market yourself in the legal arena and ramp up your job search. His views on hiring have been published in the National Law Journal, Chicago Daily Law Bulletin, ABA Journal, Chicago Lawyer, The American Lawyer, Legal Times Of Washington, New Jersey Lawyer, Texas Lawyer, and other media. The Student Bar Association (SBA) is hosting the Graduate and Professional Student Organization (GPSO) at noon in the Moot Court Room. GPSO represents law students at the campus and university levels on many important issues including health insurance, parking, bus routes, and many more. Please join us to meet your GPSO president, ask questions, and express concerns that you have about your experiences at IU. SBA is generously providing pizza for the event.

The panelists include Yvette Alex-Assensoh, JD'06, dean of the Office for Women's Affairs; Philippa Guthrie, JD'91, vice president and general counsel at the IU Foundation; Jane Mallor, JD'76, Eveleigh Professor of Business Law; Catherine Matthews, JD'06, the Law School's director of Student Services; and Suzanne Phillips, JD'98, IU's assistant dean of students. Not everyone wants to work in a law firm and you can put your JD to work in a variety of ways in the world of higher education. Ethics Week Presentation: March 2
As a part of Phi Delta Phi's Ethics Week, we are proud to host Jon Pactor, a highly regarded malpractice attorney from Indianapolis, at 5 p.m. on Monday, March 2, in the Moot Court Room. Pactor has been representing clients in the areas of lawyer malpractice, negligence, breach of fiduciary duty, and fee disputes in Indiana for more than 31 years. A solo practitioner, he was the first Indiana attorney to concentrate his practice in these areas and is now highly regarded as one of the top malpractice attorneys in Indianapolis. Pactor graduated Phi Beta Kappa from Wabash College in 1971 and from the Indiana University School of Law - Indianapolis in 1976. He is admitted to the bar in the U.S. District Courts of Northern and Southern Indiana, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 7th Circuit, and the U.S. Supreme Court.

VCIC Team Earns Berth in International Finals
Indiana University's Venture Capital Investment Competition team — comprised of two IU Maurer School of Law and three Kelley School of Business students — won first place at Friday's Mid-Atlantic Regional Final in Philadelphia. Participating from Indiana Law were 3rd-year JD/MBA's Cole Parker and Jonathan Rinehart. The team beat out competitors from Carnegie Mellon, Georgetown, Maryland, and Vanderbilt to take home top honors. IU's team now advances to the VCIC International Finals, to be held in April at the University of North Carolina. Professor Mark Need, the team's faculty advisor, said the team worked extremely hard. "This is a highly-competitive contest. Many of the other participating schools offer courses that are designed solely to prepare for the VCIC competition," he said. "After the previous three years of competition at the regional level with minimal training, we set up an internal qualifying competition last fall and structured several accompanying training sessions. Our work paid off, as this year's highly talented team is the first to bring home first place."
Telecommunications Moot Court Results
Congratulations to the 2009 Telecommunications Moot Court teams! Oralists Bob Christie, Matt Daly, Noah Pinegar, and Andrew Sullivant; alternates Brett Freeman and Jeff Lawson; and coaches Kate Lee and Kisa Ruiz competed on Feb. 6 and 7 at Catholic University in Washington, D.C. The teams represented Indiana Law well, with one of the teams receiving the highest score in round two of oral arguments. The team would also like to thank all the faculty and staff who served as judges during practices.
Jessup Moot Court Results
Congratulations to the Jessup Moot Court team — Aster Allen-Brown, Benjamin Ellis, Brandon Elkins-Barkley, John Hursh, and April Wilson. They proudly represented our Law School in the Super Regional Jessup International Moot Court Competition held in Chicago on Feb 12-15. Special congratulations to Wilson, who was scored as the sixth-place oralist out of approximately 100 students involved in the competition.
Dining to Donate
Eat at Applebee's March 4! Just submit the Dining to Donate flier with your bill. Come for a full meal or just happy hour, and 15 percent of your bill goes to the Public Interest Law Foundation. Fliers will be distributed to student and faculty mailboxes by the end of February, and PILF members will be stationed outside Applebee's to hand out fliers to members of the community. Every little bit helps. The proceeds will go to scholarships for students working in public interest fields without compensation over the summer. So grab your flier and your friends, and eat at Applebee's March 4!

Remember to Report Your Pro Bono Hours
Reporting your hours is important because Pro Bono Awards are given each year to the law students who reported working the most pro bono hours throughout the year. The Pro Bono Awards are sponsored by Baker & Daniels and will be awarded in Fall 2009. Hours are considered pro bono if you did not receive credit or pay for the work performed. Volunteer work with the Protective Order Project, the Tenant Assistance Project, the Inmate Legal Assistance Program, Outreach for Legal Literacy, or similar community organizations should be included in your pro bono hours. To report your hours, click on the link in the e-mail sent to you from probonoiulaw@gmail.com. E-mails are sent every two weeks. If you forgot to report your hours in the past, just add them in to the hours for the current week. It is not important to record the hours in the exact week you worked them. LSRJ Table Discussion About Safe Deliveries
Law Students for Reproductive Justice (LSRJ) will be tabling from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. March 2-3 in the Law School lobby. Delicious treats will be available at the table. Stop by to make a donation and talk with us about providing safe birthing conditions to displaced women. Every year, 57 million women give birth without the assistance of a trained birthing attendant. Women displaced by natural disaster or armed conflict are particularly vulnerable to infection, disease, and death during childbirth because they do not have access to sterile supplies. Preventing childbirth deaths can be as simple as providing basic supplies such as sterile gloves and sheets. A $2 donation furnishes one Clean Delivery Kit for a woman who does not have access to a doctor.

Challenges to Change
The Graduate and Professional Student Organization (GPSO) invites submissions from graduate and professional students at IU-Bloomington for its "Challenges to Change" panel, as part of the first annual "New Voices in Academic" conference on Friday, March 27. The panel welcomes any paper, project, or presentation that focuses on change or evolution in physical or social environments, change within the arts or humanities, or change within the professional world. All papers will be peer-reviewed by a campus-wide committee of faculty and graduate students and small financial awards will be offered to quality submissions in the following categories: the Physical and Natural Sciences, the Social Sciences/Arts and Humanities, and IU-Bloomington's professional programs. The deadline for submissions is March 6, 2009. Please submit an electronic copy of your paper and/or description of your presentation or project to gpso@indiana.edu.
GPSO Calls for Nominations
The Indiana University Graduate and Professional Student Organization (GPSO) and the University Graduate School are proud to announce the IU-Bloomington Pari Prerana Award 2009. Deadline for applications is Friday, March 20. The Pari Prerana (Essence of Inspiration) Award at Indiana University was established through the support of sponsors from the Indian subcontinent. The award strives to recognize and honor students who have overcome a severe physical, cognitive, or other health-related challenges and have demonstrated academic excellence. All advisors, graduate students, and faculty at Indiana University Bloomington are invited to nominate those students that they feel deserve special recognition for exemplary courage and determination under adverse and challenging conditions. Smoking Announcement
Student Bar Association wants to let all the Law School smokers know that the University has installed a "butt stop" for cigarette butt disposal. The receptacle is located on the northwest corner of 4th and Indiana. We strongly encourage all smokers to use this area for smoking and to responsibly dispose of the cigarette debris. Thank you!

GPSO Communications Coordinator
Tired of taking out student loan debt? Consider applying to be the communications coordinator for the Graduate and Professional Student Organization (GPSO). The GPSO (https://gpso.sitehost.iu.edu) serves more than 8,000 graduate and professional students at IU-Bloomington by providing academic support, advocacy, community-building, and resources. The coordinator is a 20-hour per week (50% FTE) position. Compensation includes full tuition remission for 12 credits per semester and 6 credit hours during summer session (excluding non-remittable fees), subsidized Student Academic Appointee Mandatory Health Insurance, and a $12,000 stipend. The communications coordinator may also work as many as 200 summer hours at a paid hourly rate of $10/hour. The assistantship is considered taxable income. Applications are due April 1. Scheduling Events
All e-mails about reserving classrooms must be sent to BL-LAW-EVENTS. Mail must be sent to the correct address, bl-law-events (for Outlook users) or bl-events-law@exchange.indiana.edu (for non-Outlook users). Please include the date and time of event, the length of time room will be needed, the classroom requested, and the number of people attending the event. Requests should be sent at least one week before the event and should include the name of the person requesting, the organization planning the event, and an e-mail address. Audio-Video Services
Requests for AV services should be sent to Max Exter at av@exchange.iu.edu. Please include the name of your group and the e-mail address of the contact person, a description of what you want to do, and the date, location, starting time, and duration of the event. Requests must be made at least 48 hours in advance and will be confirmed by e-mail.
