THIS WEEK IN THE LAW SCHOOL
IU Associate General Counsel Beth Cate will speak about the changing approach of the music industry in battling online piracy at noon on Tuesday, Feb. 3, in room 120.
Panelists will share personal stories about how pro bono work changed their lives and built their careers from noon to 1 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 4, in the Moot Court Room.
Professor James Ely will speak about the Kelo decision and eminent domain abuse from noon to 1 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 5, in room 120.
The Women's Law Caucus annual charity auction will be held on Friday, Feb. 6, at the Bluebird. Doors open at 6:30. Professor Mark Need will serve as the auctioneer.
MONDAY, FEBRUARY 2
Bilingual Law Students
El Centro Communal Latino Legal Advice Project (CCLLAP) is a newly created program formed as a joint project between Indiana Legal Services, District 10 Pro Bono Project, and El Centro Communal Latino. CCLLAP is looking for law students who are fluent in Spanish to conduct client interviews and/or to act as interpreters between attorneys and clients. An orientation to the program is scheduled from noon to 1 p.m. in room 120. The goal of CCLLAP is to provide access for the Bloomington Latino community to legal services that may not otherwise be available due to language barriers. The CCLLAP legal program runs the second and last Friday of every month out of El Centro Communal Latino's office located on the second floor of the Monroe County Public Library on Kirkwood Ave. Client interviews are conducted between 10 a.m. and noon. Attorneys meet with the clients between noon and 2 p.m. If you are interested in volunteering for CCLLAP, or for more information, please contact Marcia Reyes Lohnes at reyesm@indiana.edu.

The Intellectual Property Association (IPA) will host a presentation by IU Associate General Counsel Beth Cate at noon in room 120. Cate will be speaking about the changing approach of the music industry in battling online piracy. Lunch will be provided. Pro Bono Stories
Come hear personal stories about how pro bono work changed the lives and built the careers of five distinguished panelists from noon to 1 p.m. on in the Moot Court Room. The panelists come from a variety of practice areas. Speakers include Monroe County Circuit Court Judge Mary Ellen Diekhoff, JD’86; Monica Fennell, Indiana Pro Bono Commission executive director; Marc Kadish, director of pro bono activities at Mayer Brown; Kendall Millard, JD’98, partner, Barnes & Thornburg; Allison Fetter-Harrott, JD'05, associate, Baker & Daniels; and Patricia McKinnon, family law specialist. Federalist Society Hosts Professor Ely

WLC Auction
Laissez les bon temps rouler at the Women's Law Caucus (WLC) annual charity auction! The WLC will turn the Bluebird into Bourbon Street and celebrate Mardi Gras in style, with silent auctions on donations from local businesses, and those infamous professor packages. Doors open at 6:30 p.m., and all auctions — presided over by auctioneer Professor Mark Need”— will close by 9 p.m. Following the auction, a live band will perform. Remember, all proceeds will benefit the Protective Order Project (POP) and Middle Way House, the local domestic violence shelter, so bring your friends and your checkbook!
Want to get a sneak peak at the professor packages so you can start planning your bidding strategies? Stop by the WLC Auction table at lunch all week for a list of the packages. Descriptions of the auction packages are also available online. Many professor packages will begin bidding at less than $10 per student.

FACULTY NEWS
Professor John Applegate co-wrote a white paper with member scholars of the Center for Progressive Reform. The paper is titled "Reinvigorating Protection of Health, Safety, and the Environment: The Choices Facing Cass Sunstein." President Obama recently tapped Sunstein, a Harvard law professor, to run the Office of Information and Regulatory Affairs.
Professor Kevin Brown delivered the keynote address at The Future of Education and Educational Equity in Communities of Color Symposium at the Mid-Atlantic People of Color Legal Scholarship Conference held at Temple University School of Law in Philadelphia on Jan. 24. His remarks were titled "Current Issues Impacting Urban Education."
Professor Marshall Leaffer was an invited speaker at the biannual Global Forum on Intellectual Property (GFIP) held in Singapore, Jan. 9-11. His talk was titled "Trademark Parodies and Free Speech: a Transnational Perspective."
UPCOMING EVENTS
The Expansion of Executive Power: Feb. 10
Pulitzer-prize winner Charlie Savage and Professor Michael Grossberg will present "The Expansion of Executive Power: From Lincoln to Obama" at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 10, at the Whittenberger Auditorium. Savage, the author of Takeover: The Return to the Imperial Presidency and the Subversion of American Democracy, will discuss the expansion of executive power in recent administrations. Grossberg will address Abraham Lincoln’s use of executive power during the Civil War and how it compares to the use of executive power in the modern day. A question-and-answer session will follow. The event is co-sponsored by the Indiana University Maurer School of Law.
Barrister's Ball: Feb 20
Please mark your calendars and let your spouses and significant others know about the Barrister’s Ball, which will take place at 7 p.m., Feb. 20, in Alumni Hall of the Indiana Memorial Union. This year’s event is a masked ball, but masks are optional. Tickets are on sale for $35 (which includes dinner) at noon in the lobby and may also be purchased from Nicole Elder or Gillian Crowl.
Voting Rights Act Speaker: Feb. 26
The Federalist Society will host Professor James Blumstein from Vanderbilt University Law School at noon on Thursday, Feb. 26, in room 120. He will be speaking about the Voting Rights Act, state redistricting plans, and the voting rights cases in front of the Supreme Court this term.

Basic Mediation Training
The Community Justice and Meditation Center is seeking a few good neighbors interested in conflict resolution, restorative justice, and the mediation process to attend "32-Hour Basic Mediation Training" from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Feb. 7, 8, 21, and 22 at the School of Law. Basic Mediation Training is a great personal tool to add to the professional toolkit of community members interested in resolving community conflicts, alternative dispute resolution, criminal justice issues, or helping youth. CJAM is a leader in community and school conflict resolution, and victim–offender reconciliation. The fee for the training is $200, with scholarships available for those who need them. Spring Semester Admissions Tour Guides Needed
The Admissions Office is expecting an increase in the number of prospective student visitors this semester and needs assistance from student tour guides. Tour guide responsibilities include escorting prospective students to a class and providing a tour of the Law School building. This is a great way to participate in the building of next year's class. GPSO Calls for Nominations
The Indiana University Graduate and Professional Student Organization (GPSO) and the University Graduate School are proud to announce the Indiana University Bloomington Pari Prerana Award 2009. Deadline for applications is Friday, March 20. The Pari Prerana (Essence of Inspiration) Award at Indiana University was established through the support of sponsors from the Indian subcontinent. The award strives to recognize and honor students who have overcome a severe physical, cognitive, or other health-related challenge/s and have demonstrated academic excellence. All advisors, graduate students, and faculty at Indiana University Bloomington are invited to nominate those students that they feel deserve special recognition for exemplary courage and determination under adverse and challenging conditions. Scheduling Events
All e-mails about reserving classrooms must be sent to BL-LAW-EVENTS. Mail must be sent to the correct address, bl-law-events (for Outlook users) or bl-events-law@exchange.indiana.edu (for non-Outlook users). Please include the date and time of event, the length of time room will be needed, the classroom requested, and the number of people attending the event. Requests should be sent at least one week before the event and should include the name of the person requesting, the organization planning the event, and an e-mail address. Confirmations will be sent by reply e-mail. Thank you!
Audio-Video Services
Requests for AV services should be sent to Max Exter at av@exchange.iu.edu. Please include the name of your group and the e-mail address of the contact person, a description of what you want to do, and the date, location, starting time, and duration of the event. Requests must be made at least 48 hours in advance and will be confirmed by e-mail.
