Resume & Cover Letter Workshop
A resume and cover letter workshop will be held from noon to 1 p.m. in room 121. Your resume and cover letter are essential parts of your professional tool kit and are often the first impression an employer will have of you as a candidate. Learn the basics of legal resume writing plus ways to distinguish and market yourself on this single sheet of paper. This workshop will also provide you with the tools to craft effective cover letters that get noticed. RSVP on Symplicity.
FLF Meeting
The first Feminist Law Forum (FLF) meeting of the new year will be from noon to 1 p.m. in room 120. BBC bagels will be provided.
TUESDAY, JANUARY 27
SELS Meeting
The Sports & Entertainment Law Society (SELS) will host a second-semester kick-off meeting from noon to 12:30 p.m. in room 124. We will discussing plans for the second semester including a 3-on-3 basketball tournament, March Madness bracket fundraiser, potential speakers, and elections for next year. Pizza and soda will be provided.
Interview Skills Workshop
First impressions are crucial and interviewing well is a skill, so the time you spend with recruiting employers can make or break your job search success. An interview skills workshop will be held from noon to 1 p.m. in room 214. This workshop is designed to help you make the most out of your interview experiences. These interactive sessions will cover the comprehensive process including content, style, and what to wear to make a flawless first impression. FLS Meeting
Family Law Society (FLS) will be having its first meeting of the semester at noon in room 125.
Financial Planning Seminar
Doug Hyman, JD'95, will be presenting a financial planning seminar from 4:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. in room 124. Hyman has more than 12 years of experience dealing with the financial services industry, having worked as a senior attorney at the U.S. Securities Exchange Commission, and in private practice with the international law firm DLA Piper and the Chicago-based law firm Wildman Harold Allen and Dixon. During his legal career, Hyman represented pension funds, financial advisors, broker dealers, accountants, and other securities related professionals in matters pending before the SEC and other self regulatory organizations, as well as in securities-related arbitrations/litigations. As a financial advisor, he draws on his prior experience as a securities lawyer by focusing on understanding the client's needs and goals and then devising and monitoring customized wealth planning strategies that incorporate investment and insurance solutions as well as estate planning strategies. He holds Series 7 and 66 licenses as well as life and health insurance licenses. Outside the office, Hyman is active in his community, serving on the board of the Securities and Exchange Commission Alumni Association and the board of the Chicago Chapter of the Indiana University Alumni Association.
WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 28
Bilingual Law Students
El Centro Communal Legal Advice Project (CCLAP) is a newly created program formed as a joint project between Indiana Legal Services, District 10 Pro Bono Project, and El Centro Communal Latino. CCLAP is looking for law students who are fluent in Spanish to conduct client interviews and/or to act as interpreters between attorneys and clients. An orientation to the program is tentatively scheduled from noon to 1 p.m. at the Law School (room TBA). The goal of CCLAP is to provide access for the Bloomington Latino community to legal services that may not otherwise be available due to language barriers. The CCLAP legal program runs the second and last Friday of every month out of El Centro Communal Latino's office located on the second floor of the Monroe County Public Library on Kirkwood Ave. Client interviews are conducted between 10 a.m. and noon. Attorneys meet with the clients between noon and 2 p.m. If you are interested in volunteering for CCLAP or for more information, please contact Marcia Reyes Lohnes at reyesm@indiana.edu.

ILAP Meeting
The Inmate Legal Assistance Project (ILAP) is holding a training session for all interested students in room 215 at noon. We will be covering some ILAP procedures and how to deal with issues commonly raised by inmates. We invite students from all years to attend and learn about one of the earliest ways to gain practical legal experience. This is a great way to get comfortable with ILAP and prepare for our busy slate of trips this semester.
The Legal Job Market in Chicago and D.C.
The Office of Career & Professional Development presents "The Inside Scoop About the Legal Job Market in Chicago and D.C.," with Frank Kimball from noon to 1 p.m. (room TBD). Kimball, owner of Chicago's Kimball Professional Management, is the only former hiring partner of one of the largest national firms who provides search services, project consulting, and training for leading law firms. He has interviewed, hired, placed, or counseled more than 9,500 law students and attorneys. Each year he meets 1:1 with more than 200 law students who are considering joining the nation's leading law firms and with more than 200 lateral candidates. Kimball was a partner with McDermott Will & Emery from 1986 to 1992, served for six years on the hiring committee, ran two summer programs, and was chair of the national hiring committee in 1990 to 1992. During his presentation at Indiana Law, Kimball will focus on the realities of the legal job market in this very uncertain economy and provide insight about the Chicago and D.C. markets, specifically. He will discuss strategies and techniques to help you market yourself in the legal arena and ramp up your job search. His views on hiring have been published in the National Law Journal, Chicago Daily Law Bulletin, ABA Journal, Chicago Lawyer, The American Lawyer, Legal Times Of Washington, New Jersey Lawyer, Texas Lawyer, and other media. A Protective Order Project (POP) call-out meeting is at noon in room 352. Professor Ajay Mehrotra presented his paper "Lawyers, Guns & Public Monies: The U.S. Treasury, World War I, and the Administration of the Modern Fiscal State" at the University of Southern California's Center for Law, History & Culture on Jan. 21.
Professor Mark Need was invited to join the Indiana University Medical Group Foundation Investment Committee. The committee reviews business plans of startup companies, meets with their CEO's, and makes recommendations to the Foundation. The committee also reviews performance and progress of companies that have received Foundation support thus far, making recommendations for managing investments and stimulating the growth of companies arising from Medical School Faculty.
Professor Emeritus Tom Schornhorst filed a cert petition Jan. 12 in the matter of Eaton v. Indiana. The case raises important and recurring Fourth Amendment issues regarding law enforcement officers' assertion of "knowledge"€ or "training and experience" to support a finding of probable cause. The petitioner appeals from a decision by the Indiana Supreme Court.

Federalist Society Hosts Professor Ely
The Federalist Society presents Professor James Ely of Vanderbilt University from noon to 1 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 5, in room 120. He will be speaking about Kelo and eminent domain abuse. Lunch will be provided.
WLC Auction
Laissez les bon temps rouler at the Women's Law Caucus annual charity auction! On Friday, Feb. 6, the Women's Law Caucus (WLC) is turning the Bluebird into Bourbon Street and celebrating Mardi Gras in style... with silent auctions on donations from local businesses, and those infamous professor packages. Doors open at 6:30 p.m., and all auctions —“presided over by auctioneer Professor Mark Need — will close by 9 p.m. Following the auction, there will be a live band. Remember, all proceeds will benefit the Protective Order Project (POP) and Middle Way House, the local domestic violence shelter, so bring your friends and your checkbook!

Basic Mediation Training
The Community Justice and Meditation Center is seeking a few good neighbors interested in conflict resolution, restorative justice, and the mediation process to attend "32-Hour Basic Mediation Training" from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Feb. 7, 8, 21, and 22 at the School of Law. Basic Mediation Training is a great personal tool to add to the professional toolkit of community members interested in resolving community conflicts, alternative dispute resolution, criminal justice issues, or helping youth. CJAM is a leader in community and school conflict resolution, and victim-offender reconciliation. The fee for the training is $200, with scholarships available for those who need them. The Expansion of Executive Power
Pulitzer-prize winner Charlie Savage and Professor Michael Grossberg will present "The Expansion of Executive Power: From Lincoln to Obama" at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 10, at the Whittenberger Auditorium. Savage, the author of Takeover: The Return to the Imperial Presidency and the Subversion of American Democracy, will discuss the expansion of executive power in recent administrations. Grossberg will address Abraham Lincoln’s use of executive power during the Civil War and how it compares to the use of executive power in the modern day. A question-and-answer session will follow.
Barrister's Ball
Please mark your calendars and let your spouses and significant others know about the Barrister's Ball, which will take place at 7 p.m., Feb. 20, in Alumni Hall of the Indiana Memorial Union.
