Skills and Assessments Workshop
A skills and assessments workshop will be held from noon to 1 p.m. in room 121. Your personal career development starts with a self reflection of your values, interests, personality, and skills. Before you develop and market your professional tool kit for the legal career arena, you need to step back and discover what you really want. Tenant's Assistance Project Spring Training
Do you want to get firsthand experience interviewing clients and negotiating with landlords in a real courtroom setting? The Tenant's Assistance Project (TAP) will be holding its spring training from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. Please RSVP for the training to yatesr@indiana.edu by Wednesday, Jan. 21, to receive further details and room location. You must attend training before you can begin helping TAP clients.

B547 Job Search Workshop
A job search workshop will be held from noon to 1 p.m. in room 120. The Law School permits students engaged in unpaid legal work for nonprofit, government agencies, judges, or legal services organizations to receive up to four credits during the summer through this program. In order to participate, a student must secure an internship and complete an academic component for credit. Students who qualify will also be eligible for summer financial aid. Public Criminologies and Social Research
The Graduate Professional Student Organization (GPSO) invites you to attend a presentation by Chris Uggen, distinguished professor and chair of sociology at the University of Minnesota. Uggen will present "Public Criminologies and Social Research" at 2 p.m. in the IMU Dogwood Room. Uggen studies crime, law, and deviance, especially how former prisoners manage to put their lives back together. For more information, e-mail emibowma@indiana.edu.
SUNDAY, JANUARY 25
Shalom HELP Clinic Volunteers Needed
Training for new volunteers at the Shalom HELP Legal Clinic will take place from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. in room 213 at the Law School. Those interested in attending should e-mail Blair Johnson, Clinic Coordinator, at blmjohns@indiana.edu. Training is mandatory for new HELP volunteers, and volunteers are asked to commit to three clinic sessions over the course of the school year (approximately 10-12 hours).
The Shalom HELP (Homeless Experience Legal Protection) Legal Clinic is sponsored by the Shalom Community Center and is a pro bono attorney referral program designed to assist Bloomington's homeless and low-income communities in a variety of legal areas. The clinic operates on Friday afternoons from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. at Trinity Episcopal Church on Kirkwood Ave. Student volunteers will conduct client intake and collaborate with local attorneys and social services agencies for the resolution of legal issues in areas like public housing, cash benefits, civil rights, family law, and property. As well as earning pro bono hours, students will gain a basic understanding of the regulatory and administrative laws that support the "safety net" of our federal and state welfare systems.
FACULTY NEWS
Professor Dawn Johnsen has been nominated to the post of assistant U.S. attorney general for the Office of Legal Counsel (OLC), President-elect Barack Obama announced on Jan. 5. Johnsen was one of four Justice Department picks named by the incoming Obama administration. The assistant attorney general serves as the head of the OLC, which provides legal counsel to the president and all executive branch agencies of the government and reviews all executive orders and proclamations proposed by the president. Johnsen’s nomination is subject to confirmation by the U.S. Senate.
This month, Professor Kevin Brown was on two panels at the Harvard Law School National Summit on Interdistrict School Desegregation Conference titled “Passing the Torch: The Past, Present, and Future of Interdistrict School Desegregation.†The panel was sponsored by the Charles Hamilton Houston Institute for Race and Justice of Harvard Law School in Cambridge, Mass. On the first panel, his talk was titled "The Indianapolis Interdistrict Desegregation Experience." His talk on the second panel was titled "Proposal for the Establishment of an International Boarding School in Ghana as a Charter School for Indianapolis Public School Children."
On Jan. 15, Professor Leandra Lederman presented her article titled "W(h)ither Economic Substance?" at Northwestern Law School's Tax Colloquium.

Resume and Cover Letter Workshop
A Resume and Cover Letter Workshop will be held from noon to 1 p.m. in room 121, Monday, Jan. 26. Your resume and cover letter are essential parts of your professional tool kit and are often the first impression an employer will have of you as a candidate. Learn the basics of legal resume writing plus ways to distinguish and market yourself on this single sheet of paper. Bilingual Law Students
El Centro Communal Legal Advice Project (CCLAP) is a newly created program formed as a joint project between Indiana Legal Services, District 10 Pro Bono Project, and El Centro Communal Latino. CCLAP is looking for law students who are fluent in Spanish to conduct client interviews and/or to act as interpreters between attorneys and clients. An orientation to the program is tentatively scheduled from noon to 1 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 28, at the Law School (room TBA). The goal of CCLAP is to provide access for the Bloomington Latino community to legal services that may not otherwise be available due to language barriers. The CCLAP legal program runs the second and last Friday of every month out of El Centro Communal Latino’s office located on the second floor of the Monroe County Public Library on Kirkwood Ave. Client interviews are conducted between 10 a.m. and noon. Attorneys meet with the clients between noon and 2 p.m. If you are interested in volunteering for CCLAP or for more information, please contact Marcia Reyes Lohnes at reyesm@indiana.edu.
Financial Planning Seminar
Doug Hyman, JD’95, will be presenting a Financial Planning Seminar from 4:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 27, in room 124. Hyman has more than 12 years of experience dealing with the financial services industry, having worked as a senior attorney at the U.S. Securities Exchange Commission, and in private practice with the international law firm DLA Piper and the Chicago-based law firm Wildman Harold Allen and Dixon. During his legal career, Hyman represented pension funds, financial advisors, broker dealers, accountants, and other securities related professionals in matters pending before the SEC and other self regulatory organizations, as well as in securities related arbitrations/litigations. As a financial advisor, he draws on his prior experience as a securities lawyer by focusing on understanding the client’s needs and goals and then devising and monitoring customized wealth planning strategies that incorporate investment and insurance solutions as well as estate planning strategies. He holds Series 7 and 66 licenses as well as life and health insurance licenses. Outside the office, Hyman is active in his community, serving on the board of the Securities and Exchange Commission Alumni Association and the board of the Chicago Chapter of the Indiana University Alumni Association.
Federalist Society Hosts Professor Ely
The Federalist Society presents Professor James Ely of Vanderbilt University from noon to 1 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 5, in room 120. He will be speaking about Kelo and eminent domain abuse. Lunch will be provided.
Basic Mediation Training
The Community Justice and Meditation Center is seeking a few good neighbors interested in conflict resolution, restorative justice, and the mediation process to attend "32-Hour Basic Mediation Training" from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Feb. 7, 8, 21, and 22 at the School of Law. Basic Mediation Training is a great personal tool to add to the professional toolkit of community members interested in resolving community conflicts, alternative dispute resolution, criminal justice issues, or helping youth. CJAM is a leader in community and school conflict resolution, and victim–offender reconciliation. The fee for the training is $200, with scholarships available for those who need them. Spring Semester Admissions Tour Guides Needed
The Admissions Office is expecting an increase in the number of prospective student visitors this semester and needs assistance from student Tour Guides. Tour Guide responsibilities include escorting prospective students to a class and providing a tour of the Law School building. This is a great way to participate in the building of next year's class. GPSO Calls for Nominations
The Indiana University Graduate and Professional Student Organization (GPSO) and the University Graduate School are proud to announce the Indiana University Bloomington Pari Prerana Award 2009. Deadline for application is Friday, March 20. The Pari Prerana (Essence of Inspiration) Award at Indiana University was established through the support of sponsors from the Indian subcontinent. The award strives to recognize and honor students who have overcome a severe physical, cognitive, or other health-related challenge/s and have demonstrated academic excellence. All advisors, graduate students, and faculty at Indiana University Bloomington are invited to nominate those students that they feel deserve special recognition for exemplary courage and determination under adverse and challenging conditions. Scheduling Events
All e-mails about reserving classrooms must be sent to BL-LAW-EVENTS. Mail must be sent to the correct address, bl-law-events (for Outlook users) or bl-events-law@exchange.indiana.edu (for non-Outlook users). Please include the date and time of event, the length of time room will be needed, the classroom requested, and the number of people attending the event. Requests should be sent at least one week before the event and should include the name of the person requesting, the organization planning the event, and an e-mail address. Confirmations will be sent by reply e-mail. Thank you!
Audio-Video Services
Requests for AV services should be sent to Max Exter at av@exchange.iu.edu. Please include the name of your group and the e-mail address of the contact person, a description of what you want to do, and the date, location, starting time, and duration of the event. Requests must be made at least 48 hours in advance and will be confirmed by e-mail.
