The Indiana Court of Appeals will hear oral arguments in Mishler v. State at 6 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 29, in the Moot Court Room.
Sanford Levinson, W. St. John Garwood and W. St. John Garwood, Jr. Centennial Chair and Professor of Government at the University of Texas at Austin, will present "Constitutional Dynamism and Constitutional Stasis: The Schizoid Nature of the United States Constitution" at noon on Thursday, Oct. 2, in the Moot Court Room.
Father Bob Keller and retired attorney Bob Long, JD'71, will participate in "Church and Politics: Where is the Partisan Boundary?" at noon on Friday, Oct. 3, in room 121 to discuss the intersection of politics and religion. Professor Dan Conkle will moderate the discussion.

Pro Bono Fair and Awards Ceremony
Celebrate Indiana Law's pro bono commitment and learn the many benefits of taking on pro bono matters as a student attorney at noon in the lobby. Food will be provided by The Bakehouse. Attorneys from Baker & Daniels (Indianapolis) will recognize outstanding students who have excelled in pro bono activities. Immediately following, representatives from student and community organizations will be on hand to describe the full range of pro bono opportunities for Indiana Law students. All projects offer outstanding practical experience and fantastic networking opportunities for students at all levels. Time commitments vary from one hour per week to semester- or year-long projects. Indiana Court of Appeals Oral Argument
The Indiana Court of Appeals will hear oral arguments in Mishler v. State at 6 p.m. in the Moot Court Room. Appellant-defendant Paul L. Mishler appeals his convictions on two counts of Child Molesting, a class A felony, claiming that the trial court erred in admitting the child victim's pretrial statements and videotaped interview into evidence at trial. Mishler contends that the statements and interview failed to satisfy the admissibility requirements of Indiana Code section 35-37-4-6, the "Protected Person Statute," and that the admission of the victim's statements violated his right to confront witnesses testifying against him. Mishler also argues that the evidence was insufficient to support the convictions and that the 50-year aggregate sentence was inappropriate in light of the nature of the offenses and his character.

Lunch with a Lawyer: Diana Mercer, JD'88
Lunch with a Lawyer features Diana Mercer, JD'88, from noon to 1:30 p.m. in room 124. RSVP on Symplicity. From 1:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m., Mercer will also provide 20-minute career coaching sessions with students. One-on-one sessions are limited to the first six students who sign up via OCI in Symplicity. Mercer is the co-author of Your Divorce Advisor: A Lawyer and a Psychologist Guide Through the Legal and Emotional Landscape of Divorce (Simon & Schuster/Fireside 2001). She is also the founder of Peace Talks Mediation Services, Los Angeles, a divorce mediation practice that teams lawyers with family therapists in a cooperative, co-mediator setting to assist families in resolving divorce and custody disputes in a constructive, informed, and proactive manner. Mercer worked as a litigator in a top law firm for years and also has experience with the entertainment industry. She is eager to share her advice and career expertise with 2L and 3L law students during her visit this fall.
Firestone President Dan Adomitis
President of Firestone Natural Rubber Company Dan Adomitis will be making a presentation titled "Burning Rubber on the Corporate Highway: How I Use My Law and Economics Degrees" at noon in the Moot Court Room. The Business & Law Society and Office of Career and Professional Development invite you to come hear him recount his journey from law school to federal clerkship, from private practice to in-house counsel, and from running Bridgestone's international operations in Africa to executive leadership at Firestone. Networking Workshop
Statistics report that 90 percent of jobs are found by networking, which can be a frightening concept for many law students. In an effort to help you practice what we preach, we have organized a networking workshop from noon to 1 p.m. in the Moot Court Room to demystify the networking technique. The workshop will prep 2Ls and 3Ls for the Indiana Law Alumni Summit receptions and events on October 3rd when a myriad of influential alumni from across the country will be in Bloomington. The goal of this workshop is to teach you how to exchange business cards and practice your pitch, or simply enjoy a good conversation. It's all about becoming comfortable networking. Jerome Hall Lecture
Sanford Levinson, W. St. John Garwood and W. Government and Nonprofit Job Fair
The Government and Non-Profit Career Fair, from noon to 3 p.m. in Alumni Hall in the Indiana Memorial Union, promotes interaction between students and employers in the public sector regarding general career information, job leads, and internship opportunities. A diverse range of employers attend to publicize their particular agency and educate students about their field. With many Indiana University students from the School of Public and Environmental Affairs, the College of Arts and Sciences, the School of Health, Physical Education and Recreation, and the Law School interested in this career area, the Government and Non-Profit Career Fair provides an excellent opportunity for employers to meet and hire a variety of students in a highly cost effective way. IU Internal Venture Capital Investment Competition
The Elmore Entrepreneurship Law Clinic and the Business and Law Society will present a JD and MBA Venture Capital Investment Competition Mixer from 8 p.m. to 10 p.m. at Grazie! Restaurant. The winner of the IU Internal VCIC will earn the privilege of competing on behalf of IU in the invitation-only Spring 2009 VCIC Regional Competition. The VCIC is a national competition that began in 1998, during the height of the technology bubble, as an educational event for MBAs to learn about venture funding. The VCIC has now evolved into a marketplace for entrepreneurs seeking investors and a training ground for future venture capitalists. Unlike business plan competitions, in which students pitch their own ideas to investors, at the VCIC the students are the investors, hearing pitches from real entrepreneurs, creating a very powerful learning experience for both parties. Participants can learn more at the VCIC Mixer. Two training sessions will be held — the first on Oct. 8, the second on Oct. 27 — with business plans then e-mailed to teams on Oct. 30. Church and Politics: Where is the Partisan Boundary?
This past Sunday, more than 30 pastors in 22 states announced their intention to violate federal law by endorsing political candidates from their pulpits. Father Bob Keller and retired California attorney Bob Long, JD'71, will participate in "Church and Politics: Where is the Partisan Boundary?" at noon in room 121 to discuss the intersection of politics and religion. Professor Dan Conkle will moderate the discussion. Keller will provide a religious perspective, while Long will give a legal perspective.

PDP Blood Drive: Oct. 6
Phi Delta Phi (PDP) is sponsoring the Fall Blood Drive with the American Red Cross on Monday, Oct. 6, in the Student Lounge. Sign up to volunteer and/or come donate. Socctoberfest: Oct. 10
Are you ready for some fútbol? The Sixth Annual JD/LLM Socctoberfest will be held from 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 10, at Karst Farm Park (Fields 1 and 2) on the west side of Bloomington. It is a co-ed event that welcomes all ability levels. There will be a cookout following the games in the area adjacent to the soccer fields. Participants, fellow students, and family are all welcome to attend. Those interested in playing or organizing the event should contact Professor Bill Henderson at wihender@indiana.edu and indicate a skill level: a) I would have gone pro if not for my knee injury; b) I'm not exactly Pelé, but I know my way around the field; c) I have a modicum of athletic ability but no special skill at soccer; d) I enjoy kicking things. A Web site will be online next week to provide students with additional information on the event.
PAD Golf Tournament: Oct. 12
Phi Alpha Delta (PAD) will be hosting a golf tournament for anyone interested on Sunday, Oct. 12. The format will be a scramble. The tournament will take place at Eagle Pointe Golf Resort with two options. For golfers interested in playing a full round, shotgun start will be at 1 p.m. For golfers wanting instruction, there will be a clinic, followed by nine rounds of golf, starting at 2 p.m. Prizes will be given. After the tournament, there will be a cook-out hosted by PAD. Sign-up fees are due no later than Monday, Oct. 6. The cost is $35. Checks can be made out to Phi Alpha Delta and placed in Ned Mulligan's (2L) mailbox. Teams of four will play. Sign up with them if you want to be part of a specific team. Individuals may sign up, too. Invite your significant other and/or and come on out for a great day of golf! A Conversation with Prince Zeid: Oct. 13
Indiana Law and the Student Alliance for National Security are co-sponsoring an event titled "U.S. Policy and the Future of the Middle East, A Conversation with Prince Zeid, Jordanian Ambassador to the United States."€ Visiting Law Professor and former Iraqi Ambassador to the United Nations Feisal Istrabadi, JD'88, will moderate the event, which will be held at 7:30 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 13, in the Whittenberger Auditorium at the Indiana Memorial Union.
Indiana Supreme Court: Oct. 16
The Indiana Supreme Court will be hearing arguments on Klotz v. Hoyt at noon on Thursday, Oct. 16, in the Moot Court Room. In a dispute between a landlord and tenants regarding the payment of back rent and return of the security deposit, the Delaware Circuit Court entered judgment for the tenants. The Court of Appeals reversed. Klotz v. Hoyt, 880 N.E.2d 1234 (Ind. Ct. App. 2008), vacated. The Supreme Court has granted a petition to transfer and has assumed jurisdiction over the appeal.
Faculty and the First Amendment: Oct. 16
Steve Sanders, an associate with Mayer Brown in Chicago, will present "Faculty and the First Amendment: the Illusory Protections of 'Academic Freedom'" at 4 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 16, in the Moot Court Room. His talk will focus on a number of recent court cases that threaten to erode the free speech rights of public university faculty, placing the cases in the context of a more general argument: that those of us who are or have been denizens of academia tend to assume the law gives more special protection to our work than it actually does. He will be introduced by University Chancellor Ken Gros Louis.
FACULTY NEWS
Professor Joe Hoffmann is the recipient of the 2008 Judicial Excellence in Education Award for Outstanding Non-Judicial Faculty. He was selected to receive the award for his long-term contribution to the judges of Texas by presenting them with U.S. Supreme Court Updates during the Texas Center for the Judiciary's annual Criminal Justice Conference. More than 250 Texas judges who have criminal jurisdiction regularly attend the conference.

Waters Seeks Research Assistant
Professor Timothy Waters seeks a research assistant to work on a project examining the international legal rules pertaining to the grant of citizenship, and the implications for interstate conflicts in which protection of nationals is at issue. Work is principally document and database searching. Ideal candidates will have course work in international law or international relations; ability to research in a major foreign language is an advantage. Sherman Minton Moot Court Competition
The 2008-09 Sherman Minton Moot Court competition gets underway on Oct. 10. Oral arguments will take place from Oct. 10 through Nov. 10. Oral arguments will be held most weeknights and on Saturdays. Weeknight sessions will begin at 6 p.m. and 8 p.m. during the fall rounds, with Saturday arguments beginning at 10 a.m., 1 p.m., or 3 p.m. Most of the second-year class traditionally participates in the annual competition, which is also open to third-year students who have not previously competed. Scheduling Events
All e-mails about reserving classrooms must be sent to BL-LAW-EVENTS. Mail must be sent to the correct address, bl-law-events (for Outlook users) or bl-events-law@exchange.indiana.edu (for non-Outlook users). Please include the date and time of event, the length of time room will be needed, the classroom requested, and the number of people attending the event. Requests should be sent at least one week before the event and should include the name of the person requesting, the organization planning the event, and an e-mail address.
