THIS WEEK IN THE LAW SCHOOL

Dean Lauren Robel will be discussing the Lilly gift's usage as well as tuition and other financial matters at a Spring Town Hall Meeting at noon on Tuesday, Feb. 26, in the Moot Court Room. Students will also have the opportunity to pose questions or concerns directly to the dean. Pizza will be provided.

A multi-religion discussion titled "Role of Religion in the Law and Public Policy: A Panel Discussion" will be held from 3:20 p.m. to 5 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 28, in the Moot Court Room. Panelists include Visiting Professor Feisal Amin Rasoul Istrabadi, JD'88, Iraqi Ambassador to the United Nations and Drafter of the Iraqi Transitional Constitution, Muslim; Judge Marc R. Kellams, JD'78, Circuit Judge, Monroe County, Ind., Catholic; Abigail Kuzma, JD'81, founder and Executive Director, Neighborhood Christian Legal Clinic, Indianapolis, Evangelical Christian; and Judge Christopher A. Newton, Superior Court Judge, Vigo County, Ind., Mormon. Reception with light fare to follow.

An ArtsWeek headlining event will focus on "Censorship in the Arts" from 5 p.m. to 6:45 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 28, in room 121. The panel will be moderated by Professor Fred H. Cate and will include Bruce Fein of the Washington Times and former general counsel to the Federal Communications Commission; Janet Allen, artistic director at the Indiana Repertory Theatre; James Fitzpatrick, JD'59, Arnold & Porter; and Breshaun Joyner, Bloomington Playwrights Project.

MONDAY, FEBRUARY 25

Blood Drive

Phi Delta Phi Legal Fraternity will host a blood drive for the American Red Cross from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the Student Lounge. There will be treats for donors. Judicial Clerkship Series

The Office of Career and Professional Development is hosting the 2008 Judicial Clerkship Series for those considering doing a clerkship after graduation. There will be a Prior Clerks panel discussion from noon to 1 p.m. in room 122. Federalist Society Presents Indoctrinate U

The Federalist Society presents Indoctrinate U, award-winning filmmaker Evan Coyne Maloney's new documentary film that reveals the ugly truths about academia you won't see in their glossy admissions brochures. The film will be shown at 5 p.m. in the Moot Court Room. Speech codes. Censorship. Sensitivity training. Political conformity and rehabilitation. Intolerance. Hostility to religion. Violations of freedom of speech and conscience. Kangaroo courts. We usually associate such things with the repressive regimes of North Korea, China, Cuba, and the former Soviet Union. But instead, this assault on free thought is taking place all over America right now on our nation's campuses.

Don't miss Indoctrinate U the film THEY don't want you to see. Then meet Evan Coyne Maloney, the film's director, for a Q&A session after the show, with introductory remarks by our own Professor Robert Heidt. Dinner will be provided. The screening is open to the first 250 students, faculty, staff, and alumnae, so get there early.

Feminist Law Forum will be holding a meeting to discuss upcoming events and elections at noon in room 216. Bagels and drinks will be served for lunch as always!

Protecting Misogyny?: The Gendered Silence of Hate Crime Statutes

Please join the Feminist Law Forum, Lambda Law Society and the Black Law Students Association in a conversation with Professor Jeannine Bell titled "Protecting Misogyny?: The Gendered Silence of Hate Crime Statutes." The discussion will be held at 4:30 p.m. in room 122. This event offers PRACTICE Program credit in category B for those who sign in. Food will be served! ArtsWeek Censorship Panel

An ArtsWeek headlining event will focus on "Censorship in the Arts" from 5 p.m. to 6:45 p.m. in room 121. The panel will be moderated by Professor Fred H. The discussion will focus on how censorship has shaped public perceptions and artistic expression, and will be followed by a question-and-answer period inviting audience participation, and then a reception.

ArtsWeek showcases the city's many arts organizations along with performers and artists from the IU Bloomington campus in new events, enhanced performances, and presentations of new works. Funded by the IU Office of the Vice Provost for Research, ArtsWeek 2008 focuses on "Politics and the Arts," examining how politics shapes artistic expression, or suppresses it, and how various art forms represent political points of view. FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 29

Health Law Society Speaker

The Health Law Society welcomes Mr. Bruce Artim from 2:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. in the Faculty Lounge. Artim is the director of Federal Affairs for Eli Lilly and has extensive experience in government affairs and health care matters. He has been the staff director and chief counsel for the Senate Judiciary Committee and has worked on a wide range of health issues, including children's health insurance, stem cell research, bioterrorism, and HIV/AIDS. The Health Law Society will provide light refreshments.

Tri-School Happy Hour

The Student Bar Association has initiated and will be co-sponsoring the first ever Tri-School Happy Hour! Please come out and network with students from SPEA and the Kelley Business School from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Jungle Room on Kirkwood Ave.

FACULTY NEWS

Professor Kevin Brown delivered a paper, "Lessons Learned from Comparing the Application of Constitutional and Federal Discrimination Laws to Higher Education Opportunities of African-Americans in the U.S. with Dalits in India," at a Harvard Law School conference Feb. 23 titled "The Black Community in the New Millennium."

Amb. Feisal Amin Istrabadi presented a lecture at Stanford Law School's Center on International Conflict and Negotiation titled "The Dynamics of the Conflict in Iraq" on Feb. 14.

On Feb. 20, Professor Leandra Lederman presented her article entitled "Tax Appeal: A Proposal to Make the U.S. Tax Court More Judicial," in the Tax Policy Workshop at the University of Michigan of Law School.

Professor Christiana Ochoa co-organized and participated in a colloquium on Finance and Human Rights at the University of Chicago held on Feb. 16. The event was sponsored by the University of Chicago and the American Bar Foundation University of Illinois College of Law Center on Law and Globalization.

IP Panel Discussion

The Intellectual Property Association and the Office of Career and Professional Development are co-hosting an Intellectual Property panel discussion from noon to 1 p.m. on Monday, March 3, in room 121. A diverse panel of attorneys, ranging from in-house counsel to large firm partner will discuss their unique "real world" experience in Intellectual Property law. Attorneys from Baker & Daniels, Woodard Emhardt Naughton Moriarty McNett & Henry, and Cook Medical are scheduled to attend.

Lunch with a Lawyer Series

Scott Bearby, JD'92, and Michael Mangarelli, JD'00, from the NCAA will be here to talk about their careers in sports law at noon on Tuesday, March 4, in the Student Lounge. Pizza will be served to those who R.S.V.P.on Symplicity.

Geyh to Participate in IU Authors' Series

Professor Charles Geyh, John R. Kimberling Chair in Law, will discuss his book When Courts & Congress Collide: The Struggle for Control of America's Judicial System from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. on Saturday, March 8, at the Alumni Association's Kelley Dining Room in the Virgil T. DeVault Center. Throughout American history, Congress and the courts have collided over judicial decisions that infuriated the public. Although occasionally threatening to retaliate by impeaching judges, packing the courts, or stripping the judiciary of the jurisdiction to hear controversial cases, Congress has rarely followed through with those threats. Geyh will discuss why not, and why there is a call for greater political control of the judiciary. Geyh's work on judicial independence, accountability, administration, and ethics has appeared in two books, over 30 articles, book chapters, and reports.

Trivia Night with LLSA

Get ready for the Second Annual Quiz Bowl Night. The Latino Law Student Association (LLSA) will again be hosting quiz bowl night. Start getting your teams ready to battle it out. Remember, five people in a team, $10 per person. We will start tabling next week. Prizes include Starbucks coffee, gift certificates to Malibu Grill and McAllister Grill, dancing lessons from Arthur Murray, and other prizes from Chik-Fil-A and many others. Stories from the Margins

In an effort to encourage a greater appreciation for the obstacles our peers have overcome to reach law school and to help gain a broader understanding of how pervasive and subtle prejudice and discrimination is and continues be, the Student Bar Association (SBA) is seeking narrative submissions from students and faculty members on the question, "When have you felt marginalized for a personal characteristic (i.e., for your religious or spiritual beliefs, gender, sexual orientation, race or ethnicity, physical or mental disability, political beliefs, etc.) How has this experience affected you?" Submissions should be no more than 250 words in length and can be emailed to sry@indiana.edu or dropped off in the SBA mail-slot on the ground floor. Anonymity will be protected for those who wish it, but is otherwise optional. These stories will be reproduced as part of an ongoing effort by the SBA to increase awareness of diversity in the Law School. It also represents a less conventional way to get know each other outside of the library and the classroom. Submissions will be accepted for the rest of the semester.

Celebrate Black History Month

Participate in the Black Law Student Association's (BLSA) Black History Knowledge Contest for the month of February. Please stop by our table every Wednesday for the month of February from noon to 1 p.m., and take our Black History Knowledge quiz. The persons with the highest scores from each week will have their name entered into a drawing. Play each week for a chance to have your name entered into the drawing up to four times. At the end of the month, one name will be drawn for a prize!!!!

Annual Spring Break Trips

The Office of Career and Professional Development is planning its annual spring break trips to Washington D.C., New York, Los Angeles, and San Francisco. Remember to express interest on Symplicity! And look for further details in upcoming OCPD newsletters. These trips are open to all students (1, 2, & 3Ls) and are a great opportunity to network with alumni and potential employers.

BarBri Tabling Hours

Your fellow BarBri student representatives will have tabling hours every week at the following times: Mondays from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., Tuesdays from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., and Wednesdays from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Please come by our table if you have any questions regarding Bar prep. Kaplan PMBR Hiring Student Representatives

Kaplan PMBR is dedicated to preparing law students for law school and professional success as a provider of final exam and bar exam preparation materials and courses. Student representative commitment is approximately 20 hours per semester. Benefits include free Kaplan PMBR 6-day and 3-day courses plus monetary compensation. 2L and 1L students may apply. Students planning to work in government or public interest are particularly encouraged to apply. Do you have concerns or ideas that you would like for the Student Bar Association (SBA) to address? If so, please feel free to stop by our weekly open meetings Wednesdays at 8 p.m. in the SBA bookstore. You may also voice your concerns any time to your class representatives.

Career Counseling Appointments

Per NALP guidelines, 1L students may now schedule Career Counseling Appointments with the Office of Career and Professional Development. Schedule in-person only in room 020.

Scheduling Events

All e-mail about reserving classrooms must be sent to BL-LAW-EVENTS. Mail must be sent to the correct address, bl-law-events (for Outlook users) or bl-events-law@exchange.indiana.edu (for non-Outlook users). Please include the date and time of event, the length of time room will be needed, the classroom requested, and the number of people attending the event. Requests should be sent at least one week before the event and should include the name of the person requesting, the organization planning the event, and an e-mail address. Confirmations will be sent by reply e-mail. Thank you!

Audio-Video Services

Requests for AV services may be sent to Beth at av@exchange.indiana.edu. Please include the name of your group and the e-mail address of the contact person, a description of what you want to do, and the date, location, starting time, and duration of the event. Requests must be made at least 48 hours in advance and will be confirmed by e-mail.

The Indiana Law Annotated (ILA) is published every Monday while school is in session with news about the coming week.
