THE WEEK OF OCTOBER 9

Former U.S. Congressman Bob Barr will speak at noon on Tuesday, Oct. 10, in the Moot Court Room. His presentation, which is open to everyone, is titled "Are Privacy and Limited Government Casualties of the Global War on Terror?" Food and drink will be provided.

Civil rights lawyer Michael Meltsner will speak at noon on Thursday, Oct. 12, in the Moot Court Room. He will discuss his career, his new book The Making of a Civil Rights Lawyer, and what it takes to be a public interest lawyer. Pizza will be provided.

MONDAY, OCTOBER 9

Lunch with a Lawyer: Frederick N. Kopec

A special Lunch with a Lawyer session with Frederick N. Kopec, JD '80, will be held from noon to 1 p.m. in the Student Lounge. Kopec is vice president, general counsel, and corporate secretary for Renew Data Corp. in Austin, Texas. He has more than 25 years of experience in providing legal services for businesses, including corporate, commercial, real estate and intellectual property matters, litigation, and employment law issues.

1L Academic Enhancement Session

Avoid end-of-semester cramming and explore strategies for organizing and synthesizing your learning now! This session will be held at 12:15 p.m. in room 120 with 3Ls Derek Molter and Carly Szentesy facilitating.

TUESDAY, OCTOBER 10

Bob Barr Presents "Are Privacy and Limited Government Casualties of the Global War on Terror?"

The Federalist Society is sponsoring a presentation by Bob Barr at noon in the Moot Court Room. His presentation, which is open to everyone, is titled "Are Privacy and Limited Government Casualties of the Global War on Terror?" Barr has been an official of the Central Intelligence Agency, served as the United States Attorney General for the Northern District of Georgia, and has served four terms as a United States Congressman. He currently occupies the 21st Century Liberties Chair for freedom and privacy at the American Conservative Union and also serves on the board of the Patrick Henry Center. He is a member of the Long-Term Strategy Project for Preserving Security and Democratic Norms in the War on Terrorism at the Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University. Additionally, Barr writes a column for the Atlanta-Journal Constitution and is a contributor to CNN. Barr also provides advice to many organizations, including the American Civil Liberties Union. Barr will be introduced by Indiana Law's own Fred H. Cate. Food and drink will be provided.

ELS Meeting

The Environmental Law Society (ELS) will hold an important members meeting at noon in room 120. Several environmental law professors will be talking about course offerings and the Conservation Law Clinic. We will also form groups to take on some of the other projects that students have expressed an interest in. Pizza lunch will be served. HLS General Meeting

Health Law Society (HLS) will hold a general meeting at noon in room 122. Topics to be discussed include the addition of health law classes to the course offerings, future speakers from the field, and participation in philanthropy events. Members and nonmembers are encouraged to attend.

LLSA Holds Hispanic Heritage Month Celebration

Come join the Latino Law Student Association (LLSA) as we hold our Hispanic Heritage Month celebration. We will be meeting from noon to 1 p.m. in room 216 where we will be showing 30 Days-Immigration, a show from the creator of Supersize Me! The TV show depicts the story of a Cuban-American Minute Man that goes to live with a family in Los Angeles who immigrated illegally to the United States. Come and join the fun as we view the movie and discuss current issues facing our country. Food will be provided.

WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 11

And Justice for All? - A Discussion of the Interplay of Advocacy, Justice, and Morality

Father Bob Keller from St. Paul Catholic Center will lead a discussion of the relationship of true justice and 'zealous' advocacy at noon in room 216. Students from all faith traditions are invited to come and share their views on the role of advocacy in the legal system. Pizza will be provided.

LexisNexis Presentation

The Career Services Office will provide a LexisNexis presentation from noon to 1 p.m. in room 120. Lunch with a Lawyer with Phil Scaletta, JD'75, has been postponed.

PAD Initiation

The members of Phi Alpha Delta (PAD) will conduct its 2006 initiation of new members at 7 p.m. in the Trial Court Room. Post-initiation festivities will follow.

THURSDAY, OCTOBER 12

The Making of a Civil Rights Lawyer

The American Constitution Society (ACS) and Public Interest Law Foundation (PILF) present civil rights lawyer Michael Meltsner, who will speak at noon in the Moot Court Room. He will discuss his career, his new book The Making of a Civil Rights Lawyer, and what it takes to be a public interest lawyer. Meltsner began his career with the Legal Defense Fund of the NAACP working under Thurgood Marshall and Jack Greenberg. He also taught public interest practice at Columbia Law School and was involved in significant civil rights efforts, from the campaigns to abolish capital punishment to Muhammad Ali's legal battle to regain his right to box. Pizza will be provided.

PDP Party

Phi Delta Phi (PDP) will host a party at noon (room TBA) to release its new and improved class outline CD. Pizza, drinks, and outlines provided. This is for new members only you must have paid your dues or pay that day. CACR Speaker Series: Aaron Emigh

The Center for Applied Cybersecurity Research (CACR) is sponsoring a noon talk for faculty, staff, and students in the Faculty Conference Room. Aaron Emigh, managing director of Radix Labs (a security consultancy), will present "The Crimeware Landscape: Malware, Phishing, Identity Theft and Beyond." E-criminals have moved beyond simple deceptive phishing attacks and are using malware, botnets, and man-in-the-middle attacks to compromise confidential information. This talk walks through the information flow of an attack and examines criminal technologies, analyzes chokepoints in the flow, and discusses various countermeasures. Emigh has created networking, storage, security, e-commerce, compression and multimedia products, and has conducted original research in security, vision, machine learning, and operating systems. He is the author of reports on crimeware and phishing countermeasures for the U.S. Secret Service Electronic Crimes Task Force and the U.S. Department of Homeland Security Identity Theft Technology Council.

UPCOMING EVENTS

Last call for F£tbol: Fourth Annual JD/LLM Socctoberfest

Are you ready for some f£tbol? The Fourth Annual JD/LLM Socctoberfest will be held from 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 27, at Karst Farm Park (Fields 1 and 2) on the west side of Bloomington. This is a co-ed event that welcomes all ability levels. We currently have approximately 60 players and have room for 15 to 20 more. If you are interested in playing, please contact Professor Bill Henderson at wihender@indiana.edu by 6 pm, Tuesday, Oct. 10. In the e-mail, indicate a skill level: a) I would have gone pro if not for my knee injury; b) I'm not exactly Pele, but I know my way around the field; c) I have a modicum of athletic ability but no special skill at soccer; d) I enjoy kicking things.

There will be a cookout following the games in the area adjacent to the soccer fields. Participants, fellow students, and families are all welcome to attend. The Web site

SBA Halloween Party

The Student Bar Association (SBA) Annual Halloween Party will be held from 8 p.m. to 11:30 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 28, at Deer Park Manor. Check out http://law.indiana.edu/students/groups/sba/events.shtml for updates on the party.

Halloween Trick-or-Treating for Children of Students, Faculty, Staff

This year, Older and Wiser Law Students (OWLS) is once again sponsoring trick-or-treating at the Law School. This year, trick-or-treating will be from 4 p.m. to 5:15 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 30. At 5:15 p.m., there will be a costume parade departing from the Student Lounge. Punch and light snacks will be provided. All children of Law School faculty, staff, and students are invited to participate in this event. OWLS will be setting up a table in the first floor lobby where the children can pick up "Evidence Bags" for collecting their treats. We will also have volunteers on each floor of the building to help direct the children to the offices that are participating in the event. Last year we had approximately 100 children who participated in the event, and everyone had a great time. To volunteer for the event, contact John MacKenzie (jpmacken@indiana.edu). There is plenty of work to go around, including decorating the student lounge, serving as greeters, and cleaning up when the festivities are over. We appreciate everyone who has volunteered to help with this event by opening up their offices to the children.

NEWS FROM THE FACULTY

On Friday, Sept. 29, Professor Leandra Lederman presented a paper at the Canadian Law and Economics Association meeting in Toronto, Canada. The paper she presented argues that the U.S. Tax Court should be treated more like other federal courts.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

Professor Lederman Seeks Research Assistant

Professor Leandra Lederman is seeking research assistance. The projects for which she needs assistance generally will involve federal litigation and/or tax issues. Strong research skills and an interest in courts are essential, and course work or other experience in the areas of federal jurisdiction or federal taxation would be helpful. Interested students should send a resume and cover letter to Lederman by e-mail at llederma@indiana.edu, and can contact her by e-mail with any questions about the position.

Bailiffs Still Needed

The School will be transformed beginning this week when 150 Moot Court competitors will begin Round 1 of oral arguments. This is always an exciting time of year, and, as a 1L, you can participate as a bailiff! Bailiffing is a great way to learn about appellate advocacy, meet local attorneys and alumni, become more active in student activities, and meet more 2L and 3L friends. Bailiffing is easy. It takes only an hour an a half. And we still need bailiffs for several nights of the competition. If you have already signed up (online, or via e-mail), please double-check on the board outside of the Moot Court Office that we have registered you correctly and that you are able to come at that time. If you have not signed up, there is still time! In particular, we need bailiffs for: Tuesday, Oct. 10, at 8 p.m.; Monday, Oct. 23, at 8 p.m.; Thursday, Oct. 26, 8 p.m.; Friday, Oct. 27, at 6 p.m. and 8 p.m.; and Saturday, Oct. 28, at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. To sign-up for these or other available dates, please fill out the simple form at http://www.law.indiana.edu/webinit/mootcourt/registration/bailiff.shtml .

Register to Vote

For the next two weeks, a table in the lobby will be set up during lunch to register people to vote. Anyone who isn't registered already, or who would like to register in Indiana, is encouraged to sign up.

Making a Difference for Children

Would you like to make a difference for a child while also earning invaluable legal experience? Owen County Court Appointed Special Advocates are interested in law students to represent children's best interests in abuse and neglect cases. ILJ Solicits Student Comments for Publication

The Notes & Comments editors for Volume 82 of the Indiana Law Journal invite students to submit their written work for publication as a comment in Issue 4. To be considered for publication, students must submit their comments to the Notes & Comments editors by emailing the submissions to dmolter@indiana.edu no later than Monday, Oct. 23. The evaluation of comments is an anonymous process. Students should direct any questions to Derek Molter, dmolter@indiana.edu.

Scheduling Events

All e-mail about reserving classrooms must be sent to BL-LAW-EVENTS. Mail must be sent to the correct address, bl-law-events (for Outlook users) or bl-events-law@exchange.indiana.edu (for non-Outlook users). Please include the date and time of event, the length of time room will be needed, the classroom requested, and the number of people attending the event. Requests should be sent at least one week before the event and should include the name of the person requesting, the organization planning the event, and an e-mail address. Confirmations will be sent by reply e-mail. Thank you!

Audio-Video Services

Requests for AV services may be sent to Beth at av@exchange.indiana.edu. Please include the name of your group and the e-mail address of the contact person, a description of what you want to do, and the date, location, starting time, and duration of the event. Requests must be made at least 48 hours in advance and will be confirmed by e-mail.
