Comparative Criminal Procedure Conference
The Comparative Criminal Procedure Conference brings together scholars from around the globe to discuss "lessons for emerging democracies" beginning at 9 a.m. on Friday, Oct. 6, in the Moot Court Room. All interested are welcome to attend.
MONDAY, OCTOBER 2
PILF General Meeting
Celebrate the completion of your Moot Court briefs with free lunch provided by the Public Interest Law Foundation (PILF). Also offer to help us out with the softball tournament and care package drive because, hey, we're feeding you. All of these fun and fascinating activities will be going on Monday at noon (room 125).
Lunch with a Lawyer
Richard Fanyo, JD'76, director of the Denver, Colo., firm of Dufford & Brown, P.C., will meet with students from noon to 1 p.m. in the Student Lounge. In the areas of public utility and mining work, Fanyo is one of a relatively small number of attorneys who has experience in the entire energy cycle from mineral extraction through processing, delivery and consumption. Students should sign up in Career Services or on EASE. Food and drinks will be provided for those who sign up.

Lunch with a Lawyer
Gary Secrest, Michael Chopp and Frances Barrow, discuss working at the Indiana Attorney General's Office from noon to 1 p.m. in the Student Lounge. Students should sign up in Career Services or on EASE. Food and drinks will be provided for those who sign up.
1L Academic Enhancement Session
Avoid end-of-semester cramming and explore strategies for organizing and synthesizing your learning now! The first October 1L Academic Enhancement Session will be held at 12:15 p.m. in room 120, with Hannah Bornstein and Laura Koenig facilitating.
Moot Court Competition Workshop
Professor Hannah Buxbaum and Adjunct Professor Matt Gutwein, JD'88, will give a presentation on Oral Advocacy and dressing for success at 6:30 p.m. in room 121. This is bound to be an entertaining and informative session full of insightful tips on how to make your oral arguments successful.
ACS Hosts Movie Night
The American Constitution Society is hosting a free movie night. Take a study break and enjoy "Inherit the Wind," an Oscar-winning classic. Join us in the student lounge at 8 p.m. In this dramatic re-enactment of the Scope trial, Clarence Darrow defended the right of a Tennessee educator to teach the theory of evolution. Starring Spencer Tracy and Gene Kelly.

THURSDAY, OCTOBER 5
"Torture, Compassion, and the Exceptional Case"
John Reeder, a professor of Religious Studies at Brown University and a visiting professor of ethics at Harvard Divinity School, will look at ethical aspects of the issues in his address, "Torture, Compassion, and the Exceptional Case," at 4 p.m. in Ballantine 149. The definition of torture and questions of when, if ever, torture is acceptable have become commonplace in recent years. Reeder works primarily in Western philosophy and Christian ethics, with comparative interest in Judaic and Buddhist thought. His publications include Source, Sanction, and Salvation: Religion and Morality in Judaic and Christian Traditions and Killing and Saving: Abortion, Hunger, and War. He is associate editor of The Journal of Religious Ethics.

Comparative Criminal Procedure Conference
Expert scholars who authored Criminal Procedure: A Worldwide Study (Carolina Academic Press, 1999; second edition, 2007) come together to discuss "lessons for emerging democracies." Professor Craig M. Bradley, will lead participants from around the world in examining global criminal procedure systems. The conference begins at 9 a.m. in the Moot Court Room. All interested are welcome to attend.
Intellectual Property Association
A Lunch Discussion with Anne Aikman-Scalese, JD'78, will be at 12:30 p.m. in room 122. Aikman-Scalese is general counsel for Lisa Frank, Inc., and will be leading a discussion on the Roxi & Rollie mark. This is an excellent opportunity for students to gain insight into the trademark practice.

PILF Softball Tournament
Come join the Public Interest Law Foundation (PILF) for its 6th annual co-ed faculty-student softball tournament at 9 a.m. in Bryan Park. This annual event raises money for the school's Loan Repayment Assistance Program. Grab your mitt, and compete in a no-holds-barred game of slow-pitch softball. Costumes/uniforms are optional and strongly encouraged. To sign up, visit the PILF table during lunch. The cost is $10 to play and $5 to watch and eat. The Making of a Civil Rights Lawyer
The American Constitution Society (ACS) and Public Interest Law Foundation (PILF) present civil rights lawyer Michael Meltsner, who will speak at noon on Thursday, Oct. 12 in the Moot Court Room. Pizza will be provided! He will discuss his career, his new book The Making of a Civil Rights Lawyer, and what it takes to be a public interest lawyer. Meltsner began his career with the Legal Defense Fund of the NAACP, working under Thurgood Marshall and Jack Greenberg. He also taught public interest practice at Columbia Law School and was involved in significant civil rights efforts, from the campaigns to abolish capital punishment to Muhammad Ali's legal battle to regain his right to box. Please join us for this exciting event!
Fourth Annual JD/LLM Socctoberfest
Are you ready for some f£tbol? The Fourth Annual JD/LLM Socctoberfest will be held from 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 27, at Karst Farm Park (Fields 1 and 2) on the west side of Bloomington. It is a co-ed event that welcomes all ability levels. There will be a cookout following the games in the area adjacent to the soccer fields. Participants, fellow students, and family are all welcome to attend. Those interested in playing or organizing the event should contact Professor Bill Henderson at wihender@indiana.edu and indicate a skill level: a) I would have gone pro if not for my knee injury; b) I'm not exactly Pele, but I know my way around the field; c) I have a modicum of athletic ability but no special skill at soccer; d) I enjoy kicking things. Owen County Court Appointed Special Advocates are interested in law students to represent children's best interests in abuse and neglect cases. The Notes & Comments editors for Volume 82 of the Indiana Law Journal invite students to submit their written work for publication as a comment in Issue 4. To be considered for publication, students must submit their comments to the Notes & Comments editors by emailing the submissions to dmolter@indiana.edu no later than Oct. 23, 2006. Professor Lederman Seeks Research Assistant
Professor Leandra Lederman is seeking research assistance. The projects for which she needs assistance generally will involve federal courts and/or tax policy issues. An interest in federal courts and strong research skills are essential, and coursework or other experience in the areas of federal courts or federal jurisdiction, administrative law, and/or federal taxation would be helpful. Scheduling Events

Please include the name of your group and the e-mail address of the contact person, a description of what you want to do, and the date, location, starting time, and duration of the event.
