HIGHLIGHTS FOR THE WEEK OF SEPTEMBER 27

S. Japhet, professor of law at the National Law School of India University in Bangalore, India, will give a lecture, "Impact of Globalization on the Dalit Movement," at 4 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 28, in the Moot Court Room.

The Law School is pleased to welcome our alumni back to Bloomington for Alumni Weekend 2004 on Friday, Oct. 1, and Saturday, Oct. 2. Law students are invited to attend the Alumni and Student Mixer, which starts at 8 p.m. on Friday in the Student Lounge.

Dean Robel to Hold Town Hall Meeting

Dean Lauren Robel will speak with students about current issues of importance to the Law School at noon on Tuesday, Sept. 28, in the Moot Court Room. This is a great opportunity to let your voice be heard and to hear about what is going on at school. All students are welcome! Food and drinks will be provided.

Japhet to Give Lecture on the Struggles of India's Oppressed Dalits

S. Japhet, professor of law at the National Law School of India University in Bangalore, India, will give a lecture, "Impact of Globalization on the Dalit Movement," at 4 p.m. in the Moot Court Room. One of the leading intellectuals in the Dalit movement, Japhet has devoted much of his research to creating identities for Dalits and on advancing their struggle for social, religious, economic, and political status in India. Dalits, who are at the lowest rung in India's caste hierarchy, have been oppressed throughout the recorded history of India. Japhet's work provides a comparative framework for the study of the struggles of African Americans in the United States and of blacks in South Africa. During his four-week visit to IU, Japhet will collaborate with his primary sponsor, Professor Kevin Brown. This lecture is hosted by the IU Institute for Advanced Study. ILS Invites All Law Students to a Welcome Party for LLMs and SJDs

The International Law Society (ILS) will host a welcome party for LLM, SJD, and other international graduate law students at 8 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 1, in the back room of the Crazy Horse tavern on 214 W. Kirkwood Ave. This will be an excellent opportunity for JD students to meet law students and practitioners from around the world.

Alumni Weekend 2004: Alumni and Student Mixer

The Law School invites all law students to mingle with alumni at the Alumni and Student Mixer, an informal gathering featuring food, drinks, and music. This annual Alumni Weekend event will be held from 8 p.m. to midnight in the Student Lounge.

UPCOMING EVENTS

Professor Reagan to Present "Monstrous Babies in the News"

Leslie Reagan, associate professor of history and women's studies at the University of Illinois, will present "Monstrous Babies in the News: Thalidomide, Birth Defects, and U.S. Public Policy, 1962" at noon on Monday, Oct. 4, in room 104 of Ballentine Hall. The presentation is sponsored by the Center for the History of Medicine, with support from the Department of History and the Law School. Reagan's current research projects include "Ambiguous Motherhood: The Impact and Investigation of Miscarriage in Twentieth-Century America" (working title, University of California Press, signed contract); "Body Suspect: Gender, Race, and the Examination of the Body"; and "Medicine's Moving Pictures: A History of Health Education and Entertainment through Film." She has a long-standing interest in the intersections between law and medicine as well as breast cancer and public health. He publications include "'About to Meet Her Maker': Women, Doctors, Dying Declarations, and the State's Investigation of Abortion, Chicago, 1867-1940," Journal of American History, 77, 4 (March 1991) 1240-64; "Linking Midwives and Abortion in the Progressive Era," Bulletin of the History of Medicine (Winter 1995); and When Abortion was a Crime: Women, Medicine, and Law in the United States, 1867-1973 (University of California Press, 1997), which won the Outstanding Book of the Year by Choice, the President's Award from the Social Science History Association, and the Law and Society Association's James Willard Hurst Prize for Best Book in Legal History.

Second Annual JD/LLM Socctoberfest: Kicking into High Gear

On Friday, Oct. 8, at 4:30 p.m., an eerie silence will befall the halls of the Law School when the second annual JD/LLM Socctoberfest kicks off under the lights at Karst Farm Park. Don't be left behind! Join the Law School community to cheer on the teams and enjoy the after-party cookout. There are a limited number of slots still available for players. If you want to play at this famous, hallowed event, you must notify Professor Bill Henderson before Tuesday, Sept. 28. The roster for the two teams will be posted on this site by the end of the week.

Law School Alumnus Lee Hamilton to Speak on 9-11 Commission Findings

Former U.S. Representative Lee Hamilton, a 1956 graduate of the Law School, will speak about his experiences as vice chair of the Commission on Terrorist Attacks Upon the United States, also known as the 9-11 Commission, at 3 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 13, in the Whittenberg Auditorium of the Indiana Memorial Union. Hamilton will offer many interesting insights on the subject of terrorism and homeland security. Eight years after Hamilton earned his JD from the Law School, he began an impressive 34-year tenure as a U.S. representative from Indiana. While serving in congress, Hamilton was chair and ranking member of the House Committee on Foreign Affairs and was the chair of the Subcommittee on Europe and Middle Eastern Affairs. An authority on foreign affairs and international relations, Hamilton has been recognized through numerous honorary degrees and awards. He is currently director of the Center on Congress at Indiana University and director of the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars in Washington, D.C. NEWS FROM THE FACULTY

On Sept. 25, Professor Michael Jenuwine was an invited speaker at the Eighth Annual Indiana Statewide Guardian Ad Litem (GAL)/ Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA) conference in Indianapolis, where he presented a paper on advocacy on behalf of children with mental health and behavioral challenges.

ProfessorJeff Stake will present a paper, "The Property Instinct," at the annual meeting of the International Society for New Institutional Economics on Oct. 1 in Tucson, Ariz. The following weekend, Stake will deliver a paper on Law School rankings at the annual meeting of the Midwest Law and Economics Association at the University of Iowa. And, the following weekend, he is co-hosting the Seventh Annual Meeting of the Society for Evolutionary Analysis in Law in Atlanta. Stake will teach Law and Economics for two weeks at Universit‚ Panth‚on-Assas (Paris II) in early December.

The annual Equal Justice Works Job Fair will be held in Washington, D.C., on Oct. 28 and 29. This job fair is a tremendous opportunity for 2Ls and 3Ls to find employment. It is also a great way for 1Ls to make employment connections. All materials must be submitted directly to the employers, and the deadline to do so and be guaranteed full consideration is Wednesday, Sept. 29. Congratulations to the PGA Bowling Challenge Participants

Congratulations to the 56 bowlers who participated in the Law School's Peer Group Advisor (PGA) bowling challenge on Sept. 16. The winning team of Suzann Vannasdale (PGA), Tim Denniston, Ryan Hassler, John Johnson, John Mackenzie, and Chad Halstead bowled 1,000 exactly (best 4 scores, 2 game combined total). Jane Susott from Jason Wagenmaker's group is the winning female with a score of 244. Jason Rodocker (PGA) is the winning male with 290 points. "Best Dressed" teams were Jason Rodocker's group of Adam Houston, Gabe Larkin, Tatum Lytle, Carly Szentesy, and Mickey Weber (That 70's Show) and Katherine Jay's group of James Davis, Christopher Farris, Laura Koenig, Suzy Lee, Olubunmi Okanlami, and James Park (Iron Chef). Jocelyn Koch was "Most Improved," by 94 pins. Thanks to all who participated. The PGA billiards challenge will take place at Q Billiards on the square at 8 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 14. See you there!

ABA Sponsors Law Student Tax Challenge

The Tax Section of the American Bar Association is sponsoring the fourth annual Law Student Tax Challenge. The Law Student Tax Challenge is a tax planning competition designed to more closely reflect everyday tax practice than traditional moot court competitions. It requires submission by a two-person team of a 10-page memorandum and four-page client letter addressing a problem available at http://www.abanet.org/tax/lstc/. The written submission is due on Nov. 11. Based on the written work product, six teams will be selected as semi-finalists. Semi-finalist teams will present the written work product to a panel of judges in an oral competition at the Section of Taxation Midyear Meeting in San Diego in January of 2005. Those six teams will receive complimentary airfare and hotel accommodations. There are cash prizes for the top three teams and for the team with the best written submission. Professor Bill Henderson is looking for a second-year or third-year law student to work on research related to plantiffs' law firms. The project will require approximately 20 to 30 hours of research. Scheduling Events

All e-mail about reserving classrooms must be sent to BL-LAW-EVENTS. Mail must be sent to the correct address, bl-law-events (for Outlook users) or bl-events-law@exchange.indiana.edu (for non-Outlook users). Please include the date and time of event, length of time room will be needed, classroom requested and number of people attending event. Requests should be sent at least one week before the event and include the name of the person requesting, the organization planning the event, and an e-mail address. Confirmations will be sent by reply e-mail. Thank you!

Requests for AV services may be sent to Beth at av@exchange.indiana.edu. Please include the name of your group and the e-mail address of the contact person, a description of what you want to do, and the date, location, starting time and duration of the event. Requests must be made at least 48 hours in advance and will be confirmed by e-mail.
