MOOT COURT COMPETITION KUDOS

Congratulations to All the Spring Semester Participants in our Sherman Minton Moot Court Competition!
Special congratulations to all those who advanced over the past two weeks.

Those who were attendance last Thursday evening in the nearly full moot court room were treated to a spectacular round of arguments. The four semi-final participants Phil Gutwein, Robyn Hotzmann, Marc Malooley, and Nadine

McSpadden all did an excellent job.

Very special congratulations to the winners: Phil and Marc. Their names will join past generations of winners on the plaque at the rear of the Moot Court Room.

NEWS FROM THE FACULTY

Professor Daniel Conkle recently published two articles: "The Path of American Religious Liberty: From the Original Theology to Formal Neutrality and an Uncertain Future, 75 Ind. L.J. 1 (2000), and "Free Exercise, Federalism, and the States as Laboratories," 21 Cardozo L. Rev. 493 (1999). On Feb. 20, he participated in an Indianapolis conference entitled "Listening Before Speaking: Discerning the Role of Religion in Care for the Seriously Ill." On Feb. 26-27, he participated in the annual meeting of the Association for Practical and Professional Ethics in Washington, D.C. Professor Conkle presented commentary on the proper role of religious and secular reasons in political decision-making. He also took part in a mini-conference on "Religion and Ethics in the Professions."

ACADEMY OF LAW ALUMNI FELLOWS PROFILE

Who are those people whose photographs are on the first-floor wall? In this series of profiles, we introduce you to the members of the Academy of the Law Alumni Fellows. The Fellows are the recipients of the highest honor the Law School bestows on its alums. We hope that each profile will help you reflect on the successes of our alumni as well as some possibilities that are ahead for you.

FLERIDA RUTH P. ROMERO
Flerida Ruth P. Romero was an associate justice of the Supreme Court of the Phillippines from 1991 to 1999. Prior to that, she served as special assistant to Corazon Aquino, former president of the Republic of the Philippines, and as presidential legislative liaison to the Senate.

Her professional experience includes law reform, labor management, and arbitration. A recipient of two degrees from the University of Philippines, Justice Romero graduated from the IU School of Law in 1955. She returned to the Philippines to eventually become a professor of law at UP. In 1979 she was named director of the UP Law Center, and in 1987 she became a member of the university's board of regents, where she served until 1991. She held the first professorial chair in law and development at UP.

Justice Romero has served on the 1992 bar examination committee and has headed a Presidential Commission for Culture and Arts. A writer and editor, she also wrote a column, "Take it or Live it," in the Philippine Star for three years. her efforts to popularize the law have also included a successful community project on behalf of the UP Law Center and a regular radio program over the Voice of the Philippines in her national language.

She is president of the Philippine Women Judges Association, Inc. and the Soliman Lodge of the Theosophical Society in the Philippines, and she is a member of the International Honor Societies of Phi Kappa Phi and Pi Gamma Mu, the international legal sorority Iota Tau Tau, and the national centennial commission of the judiciary.

CONTEST INFORMATION
This is a reminder that there are a number of writing contests one may enter with prizes ranging from $4,000 to publication to scholarship assistance. As you finish your research papers, do not forget to check out the possibilities. See the bulletin board across from Room 024.

SPEA/GLOBALIZATION SUMMER PROGRAM
There are still a couple of spaces available to attend the Paris/Germany SPEA sponsored globalization program from May 14 to June 2. See Dean Fromm if interested.

SUMMER B710 CLINICAL EXTERNSHIP OPPORTUNITY WITH THE US ATTORNEY IN LOUISVILLE
Some good positions with this great office are available for this summer. Informational interviews with an attorney from that office will take place Thursday, March 9. Sign up in Dean Fromm's office.

NEWS FROM THE RECORDERS OFFICE

REGISTRATION
Summer registration will take place in the Recorder's Office on March 22 or 23 for all classes. Summer schedule information has been placed in mailslots and is also available in Rooms 022 or 024.

Fall registration will take place on April 3 (rising 3Ls) and on April 5 (rising 2Ls). See the bulletin board next to the third year mailslots to view the proposed fall and spring schedules for COMMENT. Please direct your comments to Deans Robel or Fromm.

The final schedule for registration purposes will be available after spring break, along with updated course descriptions for the fall courses.

NEWS FROM THE ADMISSIONS OFFICE

HOUSING INFORMATION
The Admissions Office will maintain the Housing Board on the ground floor across from the SLA Bookstore beginning Monday, March 6.

If you wish to post information on the board, please come to the Admissions Office, Room 230 to fill out a card. Information will be put on a list of housing information sent out from the Office and the card will be posted on the board for you.

There will be 3 categories of housing: (1) Fall information from area landlords who have units available for the fall and wish us to post the information. (2) Roommate information about students who are looking for roommates to share housing. (3) Sublet information on apartments that are available for summer sublet.

TOUR GUIDE VOLUNTEERS NEEDED
The Admissions Office is seeking student volunteers to participate in the Tour Guide Program. As a Tour Guide, volunteers give prospective applicants and visitors a tour of the school, take them to class and answer general questions about the school, program and community.

NEWS FROM STUDENT ORGANIZATIONS

BLS GOLF OUTING IN APRIL
The Business and Law Society is holding its first annual Golf Outing at the Pointe Golf Course on Saturday, April 1. No golf experience is necessary. More information was placed in mailboxes and everyone is encouraged to attend. There will be information tables set up in the law school on Tuesday, March 7 and Wednesday, March 8. The cost of $42 includes cart, food, and libation.

This is an excellent opportunity for alumni and faculty to "hang" with students on a casual and informal basis. This is also a GREAT NETWORKING OPPORTUNITY. The Pointe golf course is one of the premier golf courses in Indiana.

THE FEMINIST LAW FORUM
The next meeting of the Feminist Law Forum will be on Wednesday, March 8 at Noon in Room 125. Elections for officers will be held. All persons

interested in feminist legal issues are welcome to attend.

AUCTION 2000!

The Women's Law Caucus would like to extend a special thank you to everyone contributing to this year's Auction's success! Much appreciation goes to the professors who donated not only packages, but their auctioneering abilities, members of the Women's Law Caucus who assisted in preparation, and the many students who attended the auction.

The total proceeds raised equaled approximately $6,659.98, with the highest bid all night at $650 for Professor Buxbaum's package. The Bar-bri review course gift certificates sold for $500 making it the highest sold merchant package. In addition, the most unusual item offered for bid was Professor Heidt's seating chart from his last semester's torts class, which went for $250 and proved how much his students must have liked him!

RESEARCH ASSISTANTS NEEDED
Professor Orenstein needs research assistants for ongoing projects on Indiana juries and Hearsay objections. Please drop off a resume, including references, and email address at her office or in her mailbox.

JUDGES NEEDED FOR ORAL ARGUMENTS
Attention 2Ls & 3Ls who are former students of Professor Stuart. Oral arguments for 1Ls are scheduled for March 23-25 & March 26-30. You are encouraged to sign up to act as judges for this year's problem. The sign-up sheet is posted on my door, Room 265. Sign early & often.

INTERNSHIPS AVAILABLE
There are internships for credit available this summer in the Office of the Corporation Counsel for the City of Indianapolis and at the Indiana Department of Revenue. The Corporation Counsel does all the legal work for the City, and is involved right now in a Supreme Court case. The Department of Revenue is a good experience for students interested in tax. Please contact Lauren Robel, lrobel@indiana.edu, if interested.

Please include date and time of event, length of time room will be needed, classroom requested and number of people attending event. Requests should be sent at least one week prior to event and include name of person requesting, organization planning the event and an email address. Confirmations will be sent by reply email.

Please include the name of your group and the e-mail address of the contact person, a description of what you want to do, and the date, location, starting time and duration of the event.
