MOOT COURT COMPETITION

MOOT COURT FINALS THURSDAY
The Moot Court Board would like to extend an invitation to all students, faculty, staff and guests to watch the Sherman Minton Moot Court finals on Thursday, March 2 beginning at 7:00 p.m. in the Moot Court Room. Come support your fellow law students and see who will be named the 2000 Sherman Minton Moot Court champions!

The judges panel will be Judge Michael Kanne and Judge Diane Wood of the U.S. Court of Appeals Seventh Circuit, Judge John Tinder of the U.S. District Court of Southern Indiana, Judge Frank Sullivan of the Indiana Supreme Court, and Professor Ken Dau-Schmidt.

All participants and attendees are invited to a reception in the faculty lounge after the arguments.

SUMMER POSITION PANEL DISCUSSION

Phi Delta Phi's Summer Position Panel Discussion on Monday, Feb. 28 at Noon in the Moot Court Room, featuring one of the most comprehensive gatherings of career oriented professionals ever assembled in the Law School. FEMINIST LAW FORUM HOSTS JOB PANEL

WHAT EVERY FEMALE LAW STUDENT NEEDS TO KNOW ABOUT HER JOB
On Wednesday, March 1, at 5:30 p.m. in Room 124, the Feminist Law Forum will host a job panel entitled "What Every Female Law Student Needs to Know About Her Job." The panel discussion will concern some of the issues women face in the legal work place. Confirmed panelists include Prof. Susan Stuart, attorney Catherine Stafford, and a fellow law student who will share her experience of sexual harassment on the job last summer and the steps she took to deal with it.

Whether you are a 1L thinking about your first legal job, or a 3L preparing to enter the "real world" of the law, this panel will provide invaluable information. See you there!

NEWS FROM THE FACULTY

Dean Alfred Aman recently participated in the "Freedom of Expression & Freedom of Information" conference on Feb. 19-20 at the University of Cambridge Centre for Public Law. Dean Aman's presentation was entitled, "Information, Privacy and Technology: Citizens, Clients or Consumers?"

Professor Kevin Brown's article entitled "Globalization and Cultural Conflict in Developing Countries: The South African Example" was recently published in Volume 7 of the Indiana Journal of Global Legal Studies page 225.

ACADEMY OF LAW ALUMNI FELLOWS PROFILE

Who are those people whose photographs are on the first-floor wall? In this series of profiles, we introduce you to the members of the Academy of the Law Alumni Fellows. The Fellows are the recipients of the highest honor the Law School bestows on its alums. We hope that each profile will help you reflect on the successes of our alumni as well as some possibilities that are ahead for you.

JAMES F. THORNBURG
The ideal of the citizen-lawyer that all who value the legal profession would make universal is personified in James Fletcher Thornburg. Born and reared in Winchester, Indiana he received his baccalaureate from DePauw University and his J.D. with high distinction from the Indiana University School of Law.

As a practitioner in South Bend, his brilliance and diligence earned him a devoted clientele and the respect of his peers. He is a leading expert on estate planning and administration and state and federal taxation and helped formulate both professional tools and governmental policies in his chosen specialties.

Recognizing the imperative of bringing the broadest legal services to clients, he played a leading role in a merger that spanned cities and formed the largest law firm in Indiana. His old and new partners demonstrated their esteem by naming their firm Barnes and Thornburg. He has taken time from family and law practice to organize and execute community projects that have enabled South Bend to retain its economic vigor.

As president and member of the State Board of examiners in the past, he raised the standards of the legal profession today. He initiated an innovative technique of legal instruction by arranging for his entire firm to join in teaching at Notre Dame law School. At a most critical time in the history of the Indiana University School of Law, his counsel as Chairman of the Board of Visitors helped the Dean and faculty adopt policies that stabilized and elevated the role of the School in the legal education of the state and nation.

PROFESSIONALISM PROGRAM
The next required Professionalism Program for the first year class will be Friday, March 3, from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. in the Moot Court Room.

SNYDER VISITING SCHOLARSHIP
Application instructions to apply to become a visiting scholar at Cambridge University will be placed in 3L student mailboxes this week.

GRADE PERCENTILES
The percentiles for 2Ls and 3Ls will be available Monday, Feb 28. They will be posted on the grade board. Copies will be available from the Recorder's Office.

JOB LISTINGS ON WEBSITE
Career Services announces two important enhancements to the job listings found on its website. First, job listings on the website are more timely. Jobs are listed as soon as they are received and processed by the CSO. Because job listings are now separate from the CSO Newsletter, the job listings will be automatically available on the web year-round. Second, job listings on the website are comprehensive. The information available from the website is the same as the hard copy available in the job notebooks in the CSO.

These job listings are easy to read and use. Jobs are listed by job number and date (most recent jobs first). Each entry on the list includes the job number, listing date, job title, employer, and location. Scan the list and then click on a particular listing to view the full job description.

To access jobs on the Web, visit the Law School website www.law.indiana.edu, click on Career Services, then click on Student Employment Services. When you see the list of services, click on Job Listings for Students. You will see a prompt asking for a username and password. Type in "csouser" for the username and "crimson" for the password. Click on Job Listings for Students, and then you will see the list of jobs.

NEWS FROM STUDENT ORGANIZATIONS

ELS BAKE SALE WED - FRI
The Environmental Law Society will be having a bake sale Wednesday and Thursday, Mar. 1 & 2 from 1:00 p.m. to 4:15 p.m.; Friday, Mar. 3 from 8:30 a.m. to 1:15 p.m. The proceeds will be used to buy credits in the Environmental Protection Agency's annual Sulfur Dioxide Auction.

ELS will "retire" the credits, preventing the emission of sulfur dioxide that causes acid rain and smog. To learn more about the auction and the environmental impact of sulfur dioxide emissions stop by the bake sale table in the lobby. For only $1 you can eat a treat and help the environment!

IU JESSUP INTERNATIONAL LAW MOOT COURT TEAM RESULTS
The IU Jessup International Law Moot Court Team competed in the Regional Competition at the University of Cincinnati School of Law on Feb. 18 and 19. The team reached the semi-finals with a 3-1 record, where it lost a close battle to the team from Cornell Law School that eventually won the Competition.

Team member Leslie E. Schafer was the second runner-up in the Best Oralist competition. The team's applicant memorial received a honorable mention in the Best Memorial competition.

Team members were Leslie E. Schafer (3L), Patrick Vining (3L), David Anderson (3L), Mariah Moran (3L), and David Bayt (2L). All the team members deserve congratulations for their performance and for all the hard work that went into such a successful competition.
