Four alumni named to Savoy's influential black lawyers list
Four alumni from the Indiana University Maurer School of Law have been included in Savoy magazine's annual listing of the most influential black lawyers in the United States. The listing showcases African-American men and women who have been recognized for their legal leadership and expertise in national and global corporations.
The honorees from the Law School are:
- Stephen W. Beard, '98, senior vice president, general counsel and secretary, Adtalem Global Education, Chicago. Beard oversees all legal matters for the enterprise worldwide and provides strategic counsel to the CEO, senior management team and board of directors. He is a former member of the law school's Alumni Board and the Black Law Students' Association Alumni Advisory Board.
- Laurie N. Robinson Haden, '98, senior vice president and assistant general counsel, CBS Corporation, New York. Robinson Haden practices litigation and reports directly to the company's head of litigation. She is the founder and CEO of Corporate Counsel Women of Color, which she created in 2004 to advance women of color who are attorneys and to foster diversity in the legal profession. Robinson Haden is a recipient of the law school's Distinguished Service Award, a former member of the Alumni Board and a current member of the Board of Visitors.
- Stephen E. Reynolds, '08, partner in the litigation group and co-chair of the data security and privacy practice, Ice Miller LLP, Indianapolis. Reynolds is president of the law school's BLSA Advisory Board.
- Alonzo Weems, '95, vice president and deputy general counsel, Eli Lilly and Co., Indianapolis. He oversees Lilly's corporate legal functions -- litigation, human resources, commercial transactions, regulatory and privacy -- and serves as general counsel for the company's global biomedicines business unit. Weems is a member of the law school's BLSA Advisory Board and previously served on the school's Alumni Board.

CSO welcomes new leader Anne McFadden
The Law School is pleased to welcome Anne Newton McFadden to the Career Services Office, where she will serve as asstant dean beginning August 1. McFadden comes to the Law School with more than a decade of experience with the U.S. Department of Justice. Before that she was an attorney with Cleary Gottlieb, clerked for the U.S. Court of Federal Claims, and earned her JD, magna cum laude, from Georgetown. McFadden grew up in Indiana, and is excited to return close to family. Dean Austen Parrish thanked the search committee, led by Associate Dean Aviva Orenstein, who oversaw the successful search. Leichty tapped for Northern District of Indiana bench
It almost seems destined that Damon R. Leichty, '99, would achieve tremendous success in the courtroom. As a 2L, Liechty was crowned champion of the annual Sherman Minton Moot Court Competition. Now, after nearly 20 years of civil litigation representation, he's been called to the other side of the bench. President Donald J. Trump nominated Leichty to become a federal judge for U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Indiana. Leichty is a partner in the law firm of Barnes & Thornburg LLP, where he counsels manufacturers on product liability, non-competition and other contracts, warnings, warranties, and various strategies to develop and market good products. Leichty would succeed Judge Robert L. Miller Jr., whom Leichty clerked for early after graduating from Indiana Law.
Henderson publishes major research for California bar
The State Bar of California has issued a new report from Prof. Bill Henderson that finds the legal profession is at its "inflection point." The Legal Market Landscape Report was published this month, and argues that the legal profession has divided into two main factions -- those attorneys serving individuals and those serving corporations -- and that the common thread between them is lagging legal productivity. Henderson further argues that solving the problem of this lagging productivity requires attorneys to work closely with professionals in a multi-disciplinary way, but ethics rules hinder that type of collaborationRead the full report here.
Law School earns Chickedantz award
The Indiana State Bar Association presented the Law School with its Erik Chickedantz Wellness Award at the 2018 Legal Education Conclave on July 27. The Law School this year received the highest total score among Indiana law schools for its support of student wellness. Dean Austen L. Parrish praised the work of Student Affairs Office Director Liz Bodamer for her efforts in spearheading the school's wellness and Practice Group Advisor programming. Two students, LaShaila Spivey, '19, and Katie Slisz, '20, served as reporters at the Conclave, while Profs. Seth Lahn, Victor Quintanilla, Inge Van der Cruysse, and Carwina Weng also participated.
In Brief...
- Prof. Feisal Istrabadi, along with IU's Sumit Ganguly, have published The Future of ISIS: Regional and International Implications. Istrabadi has also been named a visiting non-resident fellow by the Arab Gulf States Institute in Washington, DC.
- Executive Vice President for University Academic Affairs John Applegate and co-authors have published the third edition of The Regulation of Toxic Substances and Hazardous Wastes
- The latest edition of Legal Ethics, Professional Responsibility, and the Legal Profession is also out now. The book is co-authored by Profs. Charlie Geyh and Bill Henderson, among others.
- Prof. Ken Dau-Schmidt will publish the third edition of Labor Law in the Contemporary Workplace later this year via West Publishing Co.
- Prof. David Fidler authored "Trump administration cyber report offers no new ideas and highlights problems with its own actions" for the Council on Foreign Relations
- Prof. Leandra Lederman joined an amicus brief in Altera v. Commissioner, in which the Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit reversed the U.S. Tax Court. Lederman has a post about the decision.
- Prof. Bill Henderson was quoted in "The problem with law schools? They only prepare future lawyers" for Law.com
- The Center for Intellectual Property Research was featured in "IU to cut ribbon on new WestGate space" for Inside Indiana Business
- Profs. Jeannine Bell, Kevin Brown, Pamela Foohey, Luis Fuentes-Rohwer, David Gamage, Jay Krishnan, Jody Madeira, Ethan Michelson, Christiana Ochoa, Shruti Rana, and Jeff Stake, along with Student Affairs Office Director Liz Bodamer, and SJD candidate Zhenxing Ke all presented at the 2018 Law and Society conference in Toronto
- The Young Alumni Steering Committee held its first "Lunch for Bar Takers" to support graduates sitting for the Indiana Bar Exam in Indianapolis. Thank you to Allyson Gergeley in our alumni relations office for organizing and for the alumni who attended.
- Adjunct Prof. Terrance Stroud headed a new initiative supporting students in summer externships in New York this summer. Students secured positions in public interest and government positions and visited with numerous guest speakers and courthouse visits. Special thanks to Sylvia Orenstein for her exceptional help with housing and other issues.
- Prof. Michael Mattioli authored "Autunomy in the Age of Autonomous Vehicles" that is forthcoming in the Boston University Journal of Science and Technology Law
